We played until the whistle - love it. Why can't we do that every time?

MoM: don't know really. Great debut by Vicinius, lots of potential but raw of course. I really like what I see from Reguilon, but it has to be said that it's been such a poor position since Rose were good. Højbjerinho bossed the midfield, but it has to be said that Linz were pretty naff and for the most stood off our players. Which is better for Winks, who I thought had an ok game. I liked Davies at CB, much more than on the left. I think CB suits his skillset better. Good run out for Bale too. Nice goals. Job well done.

The thing with Davies at left CB is he knows the position but equally knows LB so can gauge situations so much more.

Definitely.

Davies and Alderweireld could make a decent pairing until January maybe?

Plus he has better time and cover on both sides. And he doesn't have to contribute offensively, which I think is his biggest weakness.

That pairing has no pace, but we have a good and alert DM now so their experience and positioning is perhaps more important. And they're disciplined, which Sanchez is not. Could work well.

I think that we need to see Davies at CB against better forwards before we start calling for that.

I think that Sanchez and Dier will be our first choice until Jan though.
Time is a cruel mistress, two seasons ago that would be my first choice last choice pairing by a country mile.

I agree but if the 3 first choices don't individually or collectively start to show consistency/solidity then Davies (and Rodon and Tanganga) will be called sooner than later. I'd say wobbly defending is a Jose pet hate.

Job done, 3 goals, clean sheet, 3 points in the bag.

Decent game for Sanchez (perhaps Hart shouting at him all game helps?), best game in a while for Lucas.

good runs for Vinicius (as good a full debut as can be expected) and Bale to get minutes and match fitness

Kane and Ndombele not needed, cameos only for Gio and Son ..

A team that likes to press, we never really seemed bothered by it

@milo Hojbjerg, Davies, Sanchez, Moura, Vinicius. Thought the others did well too, Dele looked keen to impress which was good to see.

I think being on the right side helped him - especially with a left footer paired beside him.

I do half wonder if Jose redeployed Ben there tonight, in an effort to help rehabilitate Sanchez.

All our defenders are weak in certain ways, but Sanchez is potentially a necessary evil due to being the only one with pace. So we’re almost obligated to try and get him functioning somehow.

Davies did well. Struggling to see how’d you make a case for winks or Lamela tbh. Winks was passable, Lamela held on to the ball for too long as he often does. I would have gone for Davies or Vinicius

I was making a point, that team tonight, a team had mybe three first team starters in it, a team full of players many on here deem not good enough, did something none of our teams have done for a while, won comfortably and kept a clean sheet.

And yet 30 seconds into the game lamela and winks were getting stick. Did either have a good game? Winks was OK, lamela poor, but you know what we won, we never looked in trouble, and you know what, there's fudging doom and gloom in the world just now that even small achievements a d victories like tonight should be celebrated.
