He nicked it off a West Ham player before he could get his foot to it (oh I wish he had been slower now 
) but its not his fault per se, Lanzini scored a worldy which you just couldn't expect.

Absolutely agreed. He's reaching to poke that ball away from the player and just about makes it. He certainly wasn't in a position to "just boot it" as so many are suggesting.
Aurier, on the other hand, had plenty of time to do so before conceding the free kick. Which was a soft foul too -- Snodgrass got his body in the way then collapsed.
I'm disappointed in Winks' progression (or lack of) in recent seasons, but I can't blame him for this one.

I disagree, i think Winks was trying to be a bit cute. Instead of hoofing it away which i still think he could have done, or certainly put some more meat on it, i think he tried to nudge it and run round the oncoming player.
Of course he couldn't foresee Lanzini hitting a worldie, but another player would have just Row Z it. Silly place to poke a ball into.

He is a great squad player, keeps possession and transitions well-a Zidane he isn't, but I believe he will only get better.

That's the nature of football fandom. A player makes a mistake or sometimes not even something you can describe as a mistake and so many people become incredibly reactionary. Just go look in the Sanchez thread for even more extreme examples.

Speaking of once in a lifetime... surprised to see that Winks has only scored 2 goals in 149 appearances and the last was this injury time winner at Craven Cottage almost 2 years ago. Seems a bit of a waste of his attributes deploying him in a deep role.

It's not an isolated incident with Winks though. He's consistently not good enough and has been for the last few season's.
This one moment is a culmination of everything wrong with him as a player. Thinks he's better than he is and has zero defensive awareness.
The one time he decides to pass forward he tee's up an opponent to score a worldy, it's a joke.

Does he have the attributes to really play anywhere else? His passing is pedestrian and he's pretty good at wriggling away from pressure but I wouldn't really describe him as a dribbler. He hasn't really demonstrated a great shot or killer instinct and nothing special in terms of one touch play. At best I think he could play as one of the two ahead of the sitter but he's a massive step down in terms of quality to either of Ndombele or Lo Celso (as is Sissoko). So I kind of think a deeper position probably uses the best of his attributes which are safe possession and workrate.

Look I was one of the first to say he's not good enough so you'll get no arguments from me there, I just don't believe as a rule you can define a player by one incident positive or negative.
An example is I think Sissoko is absolute pish and I gladly wait for the day he is sold. Yet I'm not going to overly coat him for WHam's first goal despite the fact he didn't bother to jump. brick happens and that one incident doesn't make me think he's any better or worse than I already did.
But that's just my approach, I take a fairly long form view of players and situations.

I don't see Winks playing for us beyond this season (he's already rotation/fill in)
He's usually at best, neat and tidy, just super frustrating that when asked to just do that on week-end, he didn't.

And he will get europa and league cup games this season
Jose will then reassess anything form there
I believe Skipp will come in next season and replace sissoko and we may well bring in another player too play midfield

He's so easily bypassed in defensive situations too, he may aswell not be on the pitch when opposition players front-up to him.
