Eric Dier

Starting to look a very good player again, some forget he has illness and injurys to contend with last year and struggled with them. He now is starting to look the player he was before he was struck down.

Lighter, fitter, being trained by a coach that values defensive solidity. This is his chance, Jose is giving him a run.

Yep, Jose wanted Dier when he was at Utd and i am sure he will be a r egular under Jose. Our best CB for me.

Is Dier fast enough (mind and body) given the Jose mk II seems to be pressing higher?

That's a yes for me. He's not quick compared to Reguilon, Son or Moura obviously. Not as quick as Sanches either. But for a centre back he's quick enough.

Quite good one on one defensively too, which you get more of if pressing high.

Positioning, decision making, consistency are the key points. I think he can step up, but time will tell.

I think you'd be surprised. Might be a few years ago now but I remember reading that his sprint speed was faster than Yedlin.

Despite being one of the fastest players on the team?

That’s laughable.

However pace isn’t the only thing he’s lacking as a CB. He doesn’t read the play like a CB, because he didn’t go through his career as a CB. He’s an alright midfielder, I’ll give him that. If he’d have stayed there, we might not have needed to buy Hojbjerg. If we manage to mess up this season and not at least finish top four, it won’t be for lack of goals. Our defence will be the difference in the big games and the one who partners Toby, whether that’s Sanchez or Dier is the weak link in our starting eleven.

I think he's gotten a bit slower with his injuries. Also sprint speed = top speed? Acceleration is also important.
It is, although this was measured in-match. There's only limited space to get to top speed, so he can't be all that slow to accelerate either.

So you assume Toby will be starting the big matches?

It's also true - if you go by objective measures, rather than your subjective one.

Here's a list of some of the fastest last season:

And here's an article mentioning that Dier was clocked in game at 35kph dead:

That would put him right up there with some of the fastest.

The idea that Dier is slow is one of the modern myths that needs debunking. He is very fast.

Also I find the dislike for him irrational and uneducated for the most part. He has made the odd error but no more than the others. He has been riddled with injury and illness.

Since Dembele went he is my fave player.

People blamed Dier for Everton’s goal... that said a lot to me. Tobys man, Toby was next to him, he didn’t even jump... yet Dier was home :eek:

I’ll trust my judgment on watching every game rather than some internet keyboard warrior who claims Dier is the fastest Spurs player thanks. As i said its not just his pace, in fact my primary issue with him playing CB is that he’s not a CB by trade and can do his, on the job training, somewhere else.
