PS5

My 8 year old is very keen to get Minecraft for his birthday.
I presume it is better on a console rather than a laptop?
I presume he would be well chuffed with some old PS3 or PS4 version since the graphics are just blocky whatever... does anyone know a good cheap/free option, as he really doesn't know his arse from his elbow so he won't care what it is really.

my son (7) has the Switch and PS3 versions, he prefers the PS3 one, both are around £20

ps3 controls much more intuitive imo

I'd say it's best to play on a PC, but I've seen plenty of kids play it for hours on end on an ipad/android-device. If you already have an ipad or similar, just get it for that first, and see how it goes. Chances are he'll love it, and it won't cost you much!

Digital isn't more expensive than discs on the switch. It's about the same and occasionally less. I'm hoping the PS5 is the same. I've not done my pre-order yet as we don't do Xmas. Gonna wait for new year once the initial buggy ones are sold and I get the one that works.

Great, thanks both. Yeah I have a spare tablet he can play on... hmm looking at a review on the US Minecraft site it says

"Its pay to play. Not only do you pay $7 for this game alone, you also have to pay for "passes" which cost a lot. You wanna play with friends? Sorry you have to pay a monthly fee for that. You wanna play prision? Nope, you have to purchase a monthly pass. Want texture packs? You gotta pay for that too. The controls are also terrible and controller support is a joke. Just get the Java version. Everything is free."

Why is nothing simple. I don't want to pay repeatedly, I just want to pay once.

This https://uk.pcmag.com/pc-games-2/4660/minecraft-for-pc says it is £17 one-off which is good... then £7/month if you want to play online with friends. Sneaky. I can see 10 years of £7 is 120x7=£840. I'm not subscribing to that

So many good games for next to nothing on digital for Switch. Every Switch owner should check out Dekudeals (keeps tracks of prices and discounts for games on Switch).

it's great, I bought it for a tenner and thought I was ripping them off, I played the hell out of that on the MD back in the day, I even started running like Conrad

another note on Switch games, a lot of them are digital only, you can't buy a cartridge, so you need to have available storage and some of the games are huge, micro SD's are cheap but its something to bear in mind

You can "archive" games though - which will practically delete everything but the save file from your Switch (but you can easily re-download it whenever you like) - so if you've completed a game, or have a game you figure you won't play for a while, you can just archive it. I know this is the PS5 thread, but I've got to say - I reckon Nintendo Switch is my favorite console ever. So many good and cheap games, and it's portable as well. Love it way more than I anticipated (I've never really been into Nintendo stuff, but have every PlayStation released).

true, my internet is slow though so I find that a pain in the hole

I love mine, worth it for BotW alone, my son has the the lite which is much more comfortable for hand hold, which reminds me, even though both consoles are signed into one account you have to faff around to play downloaded games with different users, I think that’s a bit OTT from Nintendo when there is only one store enabled adult user on there

They have gotten super cheap but yeah it's an extra cost. We do archive games.

My oldest is now 14 and exclusively plays on the PC which I built so has decent graphics. Counter striker. Dark souls etc...

The switch is really for 11 and 6 year old and soon 11 year old will migrate to older boy gaming. So the PS5 and then get a current Xbox on the cheap for the spare room. Tempted.

Pre ordered my PS5 on Friday. May end up selling it in all honesty as it will be £800 to the right person. If there is a lockdown it will be more than that.
