Awesome from Kane and Son. Ndombele also good.

Davies good defensively.

Average-poor from Sanchez and Dier. Is it asking too much to sign two new CB’s? I don’t want to see the combination of them ever again in a league game. Generally interested to hear from people who rate Dier and Sanchez. What do they excel at? What do they offer us?

Winks and Sanchez should be nowhere near this starting eleven. Winks looks good when we are dominating, but when things get tough he goes missing. Sanchez is just not good enough. Against the top sides he will concede goals.

I was following the game on here but was so depressed at what I was reading that at half time I pretty much gave up, until the goal updates started coming through on my phone. Will have to watch highlights later on but it sounds like a Kane (and Son) master class and a real “game of two halves”.
I was wondering what on earth Bale and Reguilon would be making of the team they have joined but hopefully the second half will have allayed concerns.
It sounds like NDombele is picking up form which is great.
Granted SCBC should not be one of our toughest battles and how we perform against Chelsea will be key to whether we are on the right track.
But...you can’t argue with 5 goals being scored, whatever the opposition.

I am not a fan of Mourinho and thought he had lost his mind taking Ndombele off at ht. But hats off to him our midfield dropped deeper and kept their shape much better in the 2nd half and it now looks like a bit of tactical genius considering the result. But if we play with the keystone cops defending we did in the first half better teams will punish us.
I was moaning about having Winks and Moura in the starting line up but with the amount of games we have coming up we need to use the whole squad.
Dier doesn`t do it for me whatever position he plays but what alternatives have we got at the moment? Hopefully Bale and Regullion will give us even more options and we still have Tanganga to come back, so all in all I am feeling a lot more positive than I was when I saw the starting line up a few hours ago!

Don't you think this was Jose's game planand deserves credit too?

Absolutely. But even if Jose had told the players to exploit Soton's high line the way we ruthlessly did, almost no striker in world football can pass the ball as f*cking effortlessly as Harry Kane - as magnificently as he did.

Mourinho deserves credit for a much-improved second-half performance, and a great win overall - I had expected a draw, so to buff up the goal difference and demolish an extremely tricky side 5-2, away, is a great credit to him.

But, at the same time, I do have to caution that it wasn't as comprehensive a performance as the scoreline suggests - we could have been 3-0 down in the first half, and our pressing, the impotence of our midfield and the somewhat pointless no-man's-land positioning of our full-backs are all concerns going forward. So is our CB pairing, if I'm being honest - Sanchez was destroyed multiple times, and Dier looks typically shaky.

However, there are also lots of reasons for optimism. Between Lo Celso and Ndombele, I think we can see our midfield evolution in action - both made key passes for goals, and I think playing them together will be revelatory. Reguilon's pace and ability should allow him to supplant Davies on the left, which should in turn make our full-backs a bit more aggressive and willing to press (it will also encourage Doherty to go higher up on his end). And perhaps best of all, as with Reguilon, I can see slots for any new additions to fit into - Bale can fit into Lucas' position fairly easily, and a new CB has plenty of opportunity to fit into the side in place of one of the few we've got bumbling around out there now.

All in all, a great Sunday - hell, a great weekend. However, long-term problems have to be addressed, and hopefully they will be going forward. :) :) :)

I think it is hard to judge them properly until we sort out the defensive mess in front of them. The chasm left between the midfield and defence means Dier and Sanchez are always under pressure when the other team attacks.

Did we drop deeper in the 2nd half or was there a change of formation for the midfield 3? Any tactical tweaks that anyone saw?

Well they'd better get used to it as we don't appear to be in the market for a DM and unless we return to camping everyone behind the ball our defenders need to step up their performances because they are performing nowhere near the required level

I never check my phone during games as my IPTV is a minute or two behind but I always come on the match thread when we win and read the reactions to the goals and its one of my fave things to do when we win. Today was particularly telling from the posts from the first 44 minutes and what came after. We were dog brick first half and Jose changed the system to Harry deeper with GLC and Son played the line and we murdered them.

Then I think we will still struggle to make progress on winning trophies.

Simple change
He told Holdberg to work with winks and work as a pair
Honestly the guy might be a decent player but he runs around like a headless fool
When he sat in with winks he covered space and it limited their options well
Their forst goal winks presses the first man and Holdberg looks lost, with Tubby caught in no mans land. They then ship it right and a great ball exposes Dier.

Could not agree more.
