Bale. Could we? Would we? Should we?

No brainer, bring him home

Agreed. Our window has been solid if unspectacular so far. This would be that "wow fudge me" signing that would get good feelings flowing throughout the club again.

Even if Kane got injured, I'm sure Jose could get goals out of an attack consisting of Son, Bale, Bergwijn, Moura etc.

The last big name signing was Van der Vaart. That's 10 years ago. Make this happen Levy.

Why will it scale out of control? Why would Kane’s agent call because we’re paying a world class superstar more than his client? Did Benzema’s agent do the same when Madrid signed Bale?

Whether or not we sign Bale and do or don’t pay him huge money makes no difference to what Man Utd or whoever would pay Harry Kane.

In our next contract negotiation with Kane (which would probably be next summer) we will have to pay him more anyway, probably the sort of amount we’d have to pay Bale if Madrid we’re paying half his salary. That is a given whether or not we sign Bale.

I happen to think that Kane won’t sign a new deal at Spurs anyway, he would be mad to given the fact that he is now at his peak and risks a career winning little to nothing. Us signing a genuine superstar like Bale would actually probably sway that the other way IMO and might convince Harry that we actually do mean business and really want to push to win things.
Get out! Don't you realise that this thread is no place for logic and well-reasoned arguments?

Wouldn't we be prepared to pay Kane £300K a week? Rather than lose on a free.
There is no way the issue with Kane is going to be about money. He wants to win trophies and is at peak age, if it doesn’t look like we are at least making progress in that area then he will be off in a year or so time regardless of what we offer him.....

I agree, but I was responding to people saying we can't pay bale more than him

It's probably just wishful thinking, but I can see Kane opting to go abroad rather than going to another English club. A few years ago I could see him as a Barca player, but they're a mess at the moment -- could he be the statement signing that marks the post-Messi era? Can't see him at PSG. Juve? Real? If anything, I could see him fitting in at one of the German clubs, but would they (1) pay the sort of fee that Levy would demand, and (2) stump up his wages?

I understand that thinking as Kane is clearly a Spurs man and would be repectful regarding joining a rival. But he has that desire and selfishness, and if Emirates Marketing Project or Man Utd came in for him and stumped up the cash I could see him going to either of them. Remember he has two young children and his family might not want to go abroad at this stage perhaps? Even though I appreciate in this day and age it is made very comfortable for players moving country. I always envisaged him at Real Madrid but their finances seem a mess, so if he is to go whilst having a good chunk of time is left on his contract I can only see an English team coming up with the transfer money and will be one of the Manchester clubs for me....

I think I agree with you.

I'm normally happy to see the club worry about wages scaling out of control. The knock on effects of upping wages for some players are often overlooked by fans.

I think Bale is still at the very least a big enough name that he can count as a bit of an exception. I think you make some very good points.

There would be concerns about a deal for him, just flat out the monetary investment in a player his age, with an injury record and a somewhat unproven form and current level. I think questions can be raised about his motivation too, even if the answer is somewhat unknown.

If Levy thinks the deal can make sense financially I would be all for it. Not convinced he should think it makes sense though.

I fear you might be right. It would be a killer to see him leave us to go straight to another PL club. But for all the reasons you say plus - significantly imo - he without doubt has his sights set firmly on breaking Shearer's record, I could see it happening. Best alternative case (aside from staying with us obviously) is he goes abroad first, gets that experience and the comes back to another PL team to focus on his PL record.

No way he goes abroad, he has only got 6 seasons at a stretch left to break that record, going abroad for 1 or 2 seasons makes it almost impossible.

I forgot about Shearer's record.

And Aguero's getting on a bit.

Arse. Well, that's ruined my afternoon.

I just dont see this as a good signing TBH. I loved the guy, utter hero in his time here but at 31 should we be looking at super deals for potentially two season, especially when its unclear whats left in his tank. I think its reckless to be looking at giving him 300k a week even if we could make it happen especially when its an area we least need to add to.

For me I would go out and pay top top money for a central midfielder who can actually play in the position we need them to rather than part time solutions we play now.

Some good points but Bale is a superstar in world football even allowing for the last few seasons. There is Messi and Ronaldo out on their own and a bunch of players behind that which Bale is one of. We'd struggle to attract any of those players bar Bale because of his association with the club in my view. The others will either want more than 300k per week or view us as too small.

We are heavily stocked in his position but he's 31 and can't play every game. Neither can any of the others so he would add something that would allow us to rotate Kane, Son, Bergwijn, Moura and Alli. But the real clincher for me is the statement of intent by signing him. We wouldn't have had a signing like it in 26 years for me. That would speak volumes to the players, the fan base and the opposition. Our window has been good but unspectacular. This would make it a great window.

I still don't think it will happen but would love it if it did.

I just don't think the Bale today is anywhere near a Superstar of world football anymore. I love the bloke but he is not in the top levels of whats out there now.

We need players to make us better in other areas, not a profile boost in my opinion either. I would rather us go get what we need than fuel the PR machine

Bale would scare the defences we play against enough to take pressure off other areas

On odd occasions, thats not a reason to neglect areas of real need where we have a core issue.

Also from the last two games I saw him play he is a long long way from the Bale spoken at the start of this thread 2/3 years ago

Would be my thoughts as well.
