FAVOURITE AWAY GAME(S)

thfcsteff

Terry Dyson
So, in what will come as a massive surprise to you, I found myself tangenting and wittering on and on (and on !) with Grays1980 in a political thread (avoid if you don't already read it, 'tis a dirty, dogged affair for the hearty and foolish hahahaha)...I started wittering on about how much I love away days. So let's have it. Come on. A few of your favorites. They don't necessarily have to be successful, just memorable, the ones you think and talk about whenever "away days" comes up...I'll kick it off with an oldie...

April 1982, @ Highbury...a 3-1 win which looked to be launching us ever closer to the title. We did them properly, Crooksie was in form and they were brick. Absolutely heaving. There have been a few NLDs which have been fun, one I remember was a 1-1 draw in the early 90s (night game) where they'd had there tiles done in the bathrooms and thus there was a conga line leading into the bogs singing "lets all smash the toilets"...not clever, but, well, I still remember it.

March 1995, @ Anfield...that 2-1 QF win. Just magic. Sheringham's goal was a thing of absolute beauty. At full-time, I was meeting some Scouse mates outside briefly, I saw them, I was bursting to scream a big YESSSS and my mate's Dad grabbed me round the shoulder and said, "Go 'ed lad, you were great today, let it out!" So I did, and all passers by were great too, most saying well done and what not. No aggro. Never had any with them in 9 visits there.

August 2002, @ Goodison...2-2 opening day of season, this was the first time I saw the fire in my son's eyes for it rather than just "going with his Dad to games"...we'd bought the new Kappa away shirt from the shop before boarding coaches which had broken A/C, were lucky to get there in time due to a horrendous accident on the motorway, adrenaline was racing and when Etherington fudging smashed one from 25 yards or whatever off the underside of the bar, we absolutely lost it, and I swear, the look in my son's eyes as we jumped like looneys was when I knew he was all in...

I'll stop. There are loads. Share yours and make me forget this fudging pandemic!!!!

2000/2001 season derby away, we lost 2-1 but it was the first proper organised Bedford boys away day and we went by coach
Me and 3mates drank 24 cans before we got to the pub on the outskirts of derby, so we’re well in our way.
We go in the pub and the landlord asks us to go downstairs as we’re away fans which was fine... but no Bar staff down stairs :(:(

so after a while we helped ourselves.... yep we got slaughtered (we’ll all airy form Pablo who only drunk ale so went upstairs for his pumped pint)

when the landlord eventually came down 2 hours later he realised the mess he was in with 23 drunk blokes all in good spirits and his anger. What followed was a funny conversation as two lads were 17, and one lad with us was a copper so when the guy threatened to call the police he had words

got to the ground and half the lads didn’t get in or care TBH

I did. Fell asleep. Woke up and went to what I thought were the toilets in our end but some how ended up in the ones derbys end (never worked out how). Went to what I thought was my seat and the people their called the stewards as I was clearly “a yid”!!! Then got escorted back to my seat by being marched around the pitch back to our end by two lady coppers. Get back to my seat to some kind of hero’s welcome and then Taribo west scores for them

when we get back to the coach we find that some of the lads have ended up with a bottle of tequila and a bottle of something else green :(. We then drink it on the way home playing card games and end up in some village pub near Bedford all quite messy ...

Had some corkers at Emirates Marketing Project, Maine Road and Eastlands but...

...none will beat 2010 at Eastlands. What a night! And what a legendary tinkle-up afterwards, thanks to my best mate being the DD...Knutsford was heaving with joy on the way home...what a night! In lieu of missing the CL QF 2ndleg, I have to say I did have a fine old time up there last season for that VAR moment. Hate VAR but what a hilarious end to the match, together with the old fashioned caveman exchange of opinions at the final whistle. City seems to be the only "new" stadium which still retains a healthy amount of banter and atmosphere in the areas around the away section...

fudging thread reminds me of how much I miss going to games. Can’t wait to get back.

Haven’t been to a major amount of away games but two stick out for the same reason. Went to watch us play Liverpool at Anfield in 96. Dour 0-0 but was in with the Scousers and despite being told by the fella who brought us (I was 16), myself and a couple of mates couldn’t help but shout for Spurs. To be fair, I hate Liverpool, but their supporters were fine with us.

Went to watch us play Stoke a few times as my mate is a ST holder there. Always in with the Stokies. We beat them 2-1 up there the year we first got to the CL. Gudjonsson scored the winner. In with proper hardcore Stoke fans. As the ball hit the net, it was the strangest feeling. The euphoria rushed through me, it felt like from my feet all the way up my body and I had to almost “put a lid” on it as it was about to hit my mouth. Sat on my hands absolutely euphoric and couldn’t show it. I’ve never felt that before or since.

I did once go to Highbury for an Arsenal v Swindon game in the 90s with my football team. I insisted on wearing my Spurs kit despite being in with them. My manager told me in no uncertain terms that I had to cover it with a tracksuit or I’d be knifed. At 13, I knew the difference between bravery and stupidity and did as he said. Enjoyed Swindon scoring and snatching a draw though.

Without a doubt 2-1 win at Anfield in cup, particularly as we never won up there in my dad's lifetime, good trip home as son in law drove and I could have a drink when we stopped off nr Birmingham, this was followed by one of my worst away trips, Leeds for semi final.

That Leeds (Everton semi to be clear) game was mental. They had three sides of the ground! Yes that big stand was massive, but three sides is three sides. We were brick. The whole thing was weird.

If ever our name was on the cup, it was that year. Was sure we’d beat Everton. But we fudging never turned up. Poor Nethercott got roasted at left back time and again. As ropey as he was normally anyway, he was out of position that day due to a bunch of injuries.

Wonder would we have held onto Klinsmann and Popescu if we’d won the cup and built from there?

Still not over that fudging brickshow 25 years later. Tottenham eh? The only club who can fudge destiny.

Coming from Sydney, I don't get many opportunities, but the ones that stick out most for me...

Real Madrid 4-0 Spurs 2011

Travelled over from Australia for 3 months in London, my first European trip. The match was pretty awful but we didn't stop singing and I'll never forget the 8 or so incredible hours in Plaza Mayor before the match. And a special mention the Real Madrid people for putting our match against arsenal (Rose's screamer) on the big screen after the match.

Swansea 1-3 Spurs 2017
1-0 down to a poor Swansea match in the 89th minute and looking at a brick trip back to London...until we scored 3 goals. Away end went mental...but the train ride back was still pretty brick. Got back to Euston at 5am.

Liverpool 0-2 Spurs 2011
We hadn't won in however many years. A screamer from VDV and a Modric penalty.

Spurs in Hong Kong 2017
From what I remember it was a fun 4 nights.

Manchester United 2 - Tottenham Hotspur 3

I was there the day we got our first win over United in donkeys years. Sitting next to my mate in the United section trying to bite my tongue. When Bale got the third I couldn't help myself and jumped up and down all the United fans realised I was an outsider but they took it in good grace. [emoji38]

that Swansea game was brilliant
I was the only bloke in a suit in our end as I had a meeting in Swansea that day got soaked
Got broke
And had a massive massive high at the end

So many great away days and if i was honest i would say i enjoyed the away days better then those at home ( to many moaners at home while the away support are there for the club). As i have said so many great away trips but one that stands out in my mind was when we beat Liverpool back in the early 80s, it was our first win there since the bloody titanic went down!!!!.

Crooks scored and we went mental and ended up a long way from where we started, it was not the best of games but after such a long time of trying we managed to stop those fudging headlines about how long it was since we won on their patch.

I remember Leeds away in 2004
Keane scored the winner not long after half time and my mate goes absolutely mental and jumps on my ankle whilst pushing me down the stairs towards the pitch

Whilst he is still celebrating alone some stewards and a St. John’s ambulance lady come and check im all right. I couldn’t actually put any weight in my ankle so they wanted to take me to hospital... problem was I was driving and there were 3 others with me

turned out my mate who had a huge gambling problem that cost him his house, his wife and over £100k had won £60k on that goal

City to get CL was madness obviously, Palace away when Dele scored that goal was great for the celebration when that went in, been to tonne of great away days thankfully.

But one of my favourites will always be Charlton 2-3 Tottenham in 05 I believe. 2-0 down at HT and Bent giving it the biggun showing us 2-0 with his fingers when down on the floor near the away fans. King, Mido and Keane with the second half goals, away end going crackers. Bent ended up going off injured at 2-2 and you could see me and friends celebrating the winner on MOTD.

The 4-4 game at the death star. I was going with a friend who is a gooner, but a nice one. He just loves football, and is very knowledgeable, also about spurs. He knows more facts and stats about spurs (and any other club) than I do.
Anyway, we were sat in a posh box, filled with gooners (obviously), and a fair few arsenal legends. When the equaliser went in, I could not contain myself, and went mental, and my newly poured pint went flying in the air, and most of the content hit David Seaman :D
He wasn't pleased, but later told me he was fine with it, as he liked seeing that people were passionate about the game and their club. He was a very nice guy.

Haha fantastic story but the bolded bits do not compute. Hand back your Spurs supporter badge please:D
