Serge Aurier

If we do sell Aurier, who would cover Doherty? Gedson could. Moura should. Lamela, Sissoko at a push.

If no one pays up, having Aurier competing with Doherty, and being able to rotate could be a good thing.

I don't want someone identical covering Doherty, and Aurier is basically a shorter, slightly less reliable version of the guy, if you go by the stats. Both are almost forwards accidentally at right-back.

What I'd like to see is an alternate to Doherty - someone stolid, defensive, reliable, who can tuck in and act as an auxiliary center-back when we're in possession...

...while Sessegnon becomes the attacking left back on the other side.

What we have with Sessegnon and Davies (one wing-back so offensive he's almost a forward, and one defensive left-back) could be mirrored by our situation at RB, if we play our cards right. And what that allows is for us to switch up at will - if the attacking RB's injured, bring on the attacking LB and change our approach play from right-sided to left-sided.Would be difficult to defend against.

Normally, the trouble with doing that is that the players higher up on the wings can't really switch up as easily as that, but in Bergwijn and Son, I think we have two players who can genuinely take up offensive or defensive roles with ease to match a change at the full-back positions.

So, yeah, Tanganga being the RB cover would suit me fine. Or someone reliable at the back, without as many attacking instincts - Zeki Celik, perhaps, or Emerson, or (in dreamland) Nordi Mukiele.

If Aurier ends up staying we would still have the option of playing Tanganga as a right back. We could also use Tanganga in that sitting LB role as we did last season.

Would prefer another right back in, like you. Don't think it's our highest priority right now so I suppose it will depend on what we can get for Aurier in the market.

Mourinho was quite clear in what he said yesterday, Doherty has been signed to supplement Aurier and lighten his workload - not replace him. Of course there will be those who refuse to accept this and claim he is just saying that, but Mourinho stated he wants to improve his backup options. Mentioned Aurier having to play constantly last season so Doherty will help that. With Aurier being rested and fresher physically and mentally hopefully will lead to less errors....

Has had a really good week ..

Good goal, obviously popular with squad .. good depth now

Huge performance.

Knew he'd score when he was in the box with the ball on his right, can be very composed in that situation. Great goal celebration and I enjoyed seeing Moura acknowledging the ball from PEH too, all fuzzy warm team spirit vibes atm, need a fair affairs / black eyes to spice it up a bit..

Important player in our squad, he has a personality which our other players seem to appreciate which helps with morale in the squad. Glad we never sold him.

Yes, played well today and given we have two games per week every week pretty much til January, we definitely need two players per position.

Equally given that it doesnt look like a CB is coming in, then Tanganga will be needed in the middle

I still prefer Doherty, and still dont trust Aurier, but he's had a good week and hopefully Jose is improving his defending

@Bedfordspurs - notice how we don’t look so weak at full back now that we no longer have a gaping hole in the middle of midfield?
Or we still haven’t kept a clean sheet all season so far
And of course their goal was almost an identical one to the one we conceded last season up there
But why dwell on the first 40 seconds when the remainder was so brilliant

as I’ve always done with serge when he has played well I’ve given him credit and when he has been stupid I’ve dug him out because that’s how he swings between sublime and stupid. Yesterday was a brilliant performance from him. Chelsea first half the whole defence looked poor, and that changed second half as they actually pushed forwards so he had a poor clear half (as did everyone), and a very good second half.

Disagree about our defence looking poor in the first half against Chelsea. They had two reasonable chances only despite about 75% possession.

As I’ve said many times
It’s all about opinions
I listened to it on the radio (watched it after the second half when I got in)
And they were running through us at ease
But that’s football, and it’s a results business
