Cycling thread

A lot of his competitors will be aiming to peak at the end of the month I think? Tough to judge whether he’s just targeted this event or if he’s now a genuine contender?

I get that and agree to a degree, but he looks scary good to me. Sometimes someone just stands out and you know in any sport, this guy belongs. He looks like he belongs.

Quite a few favourites over the years have crashed out of the Tour. As you say others will peak later in the month and the Tour does not start till the 28th.

I’m way more excited about watching the Tour than I was about the EPL season re-starting.

No cav, thomas or Froome in this years tour.

Most sad about cav, my favourite ever sportsman.

Love Cav. Couldn’t give a s.hit about Froome - definite doper, imho.

Speaking of which, I’m reading Cycle of Lies by Juliet Macur. Excellent fresh insight into the Armstrong affair. I hadn’t realised that he was at it quite so early in his career.

So gutting that Cav didnt get to break the stage record (or get that Olympic gold).

Chich, Who should we be supporting/showing an interest in this year?

Roglic looks good for the win. So many up and coming cyclists. Yates has been told to go for just stage wins so should be exciting to watch.

Bogacar i might have spelt that wrong looks amazingly talented young slovenian. Lot of good cyclists coming through. Im pretty drunk right now so will have trouble writing their names correctly but the dutch guy who won the sprint in paris last year should really win most sprints with caleb ewan getting a couple. People like sam Bennett are second tier.

Cav could still go next year for the Olympics because the should be qualifying again. Reading more about him he has had clinical depression and it is no wonder he lost his edge. I had it when i was diagnosed with Parkinson's and it fcjking depressing and you lose all energy or will to do things.

He could still make the Olympics though.....

So many good cycle books out there. The peace race about the race through former soviet countries by the only guy to have raced that and the tour de france (soviets were not allowed in the tour at the time) and it also has all the stasi files on him at the time in there.

It is actually the best book i have read. The peace race.

Cheers for the recommendation - I’ll look that one out.

Agreed on cycling books. Some great reads. Matt Rendell’s The Rise and Fall of Marco Pantani is particularly excellent.

In my drunk fuelled state i got the title wrong.

It is called The race against the Stasi.

Seriously recommend it to anyone on here, best factual book ever written. It does not matter if you like cycling or not. It shos the brutality of the stasi how it broke up families against a backdrop of sporting endeavor. Really would make a great movie.

It made me cry and it is one of the few books i have read more then once, probably time for another go actually.

On Pantani, i loved him. The movie on hos life was terribly sad not read the book. Shall put it on the list. On a cycle forum im sometimes on some seem convinced that the was mafia involvement in his death...

Cheers, bud. That’s why I couldn’t find it! Just ordered it off eBay.

I’d really recommend the Pantani one - as you say, a really sad story.

If it goes ahead there is huge scope for someone to come of nowhere and win it.
The lack of testing during the lockdown give an opportunity to for innovative dopers to really push the limits and perhaps do something new.

No just an other driver who had to throw on their brakes when a prat pulled out of their cycle lane to overtake a bus.
