Uighur treatment in China

If not, it does feel like there should be one.

I read Demba Ba's take this morning and found it particularly interesting.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53801271

This bit in particular (not just cause it points out Arsenal's hypocritical actions as most clubs would've been caught in the same dilemma).

"If there was a financial risk to Black Lives Matter, it would not have happened," he added.

Arsenal talked about Black Lives Matter but when it was about Uighur lives Arsenal didn't want to talk about it because of the pressure and economic impact.

When there are financial benefits, some people close their eyes. Money has more value than real values."

There is so much going on and I hope the discourse will not get clogged up with blanket accusations of woke-ism, double standards and whatabout-ery.

Yes I have some Chinese goods, and yes I am against the idea of genocide and wiping out civilised cultures due to their religion. I'm quite certain that those two assertions can co exist before anyone goes down a more basic than basic itself route with that one.

Key issue here is that we won't have any stats right? So no one really knows the level of what happening but there's been noises for a long time. The ambassador on the BBC didn't do much to quell those noises imo. At times the UK has taken a bit of a bashing for issues with race and tolerance and sure we've got issues to work out but it appears that something truly barbaric and on a huge scale is happening and has been doing so for quite a while.

@spurspinter1 There’s this thread about Uighurs but it has a rather divisive title... perhaps a Mod can merge them...

https://www.glory-glory.co.uk/community/threads/brown-muslim-lives-matter-protests.10587/

Hmm yeah I saw the muslim/brown lives matter thing but wondered if this transcends either due to the severity...

I can't get my head around this subject with respect to stopping it.

Like Ba says (more succinctly than I would have tbh), Money has more value than real values. I don't want this to devolve in to a left / right thing but it's not an arab state with oil so is it really just that we're not interested as we'd only stand to lose out financially? Doing the right thing isn't going to be the most profitable but surely having a world free of this kind of tyranny is better than the stock markets performing better than expected.

This does seem to fly under people's subconscious for some reason which baffles me. We seem to ask the tough questions about certain nation's only.

There is systematic murder and torture taking place here and in many countries and its being undertaken by regimes

In the western world, a blind eye turned to blatant Islamaphobia regularly and this is one part of the answer to the question above - why is there not the same outrage to bigotry against Muslims? People ignore it I'm sad to say. There are echos of the attitude displayed to the Jewish people pre WWII.

I agree there seems to be a league table of what is and not news our what is ignored? Im not sure I agree about the Jewish pre WWII but I get the sentiment.

Whilst we rightfully cry for many crimes towards humans but turn a blind eye to women and children murdered by Saudi regimes for frankly silly crimes. The Western world values it's own more important than others

Because Muslim is a choice, not a race/nationality.

Nobody has the right for their stupidity to be protected.

there will be apathy towards islamic plights from the western world for a long time yet. this is really unfortunate for uighurs caught up in the china situation currently, but there's just so many islamic values that go against western moral values, hence the "blind eye". as a religion, islam's views on apostasy, lgbt rights, womens rights, sharia law etc mean that the religion is unpalatable to many in the west - and so even when there are substantial human rights violations, its difficult to politically muster up much support to intervene here.

i genuinely think if this was simply a uighur vs china issue, with no religious connotations, china would have a much harder time getting away with this - especially with justifying it to their own population. as it is, it appears that the chinese population are accepting that islam is a threat to them, and that the government's actions are justified.

That post is as silly as saying that christianity has views on anything from minority rights to transubstantiation. Only the tiniest of sects have group-wide opinions. There’s massive diversity of Islamic thought, which is one very good reason to say that Islamaphobia is essentially rooted in racism rather than some supposed doctrinal critique.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing, as was once said. The night of the broken glass showed the nazi's there were almost no limits to the atrocities that people would ignore and stay silent about it. This is the comparison I was making, but needless to stay it is quite different in other ways.
