Anyone remember that Bale chap?

The club announced on Wednesday that the out-of-favour Wales forward would not be among the 24-man party for the round-of-16 tie and Zidane, the Real head coach, said after landing in Manchester yesterday that Bale had asked not to travel because of a “personal reason”.

“The only thing to say — and this was in a personal conversation between us — is that he preferred not to play,” Zidane said. “The rest remains between me and him. I don’t want to add anything else. He’s not injured.”

Reinforces my view that Zidane is a clam. If the reason is personal, there is no need to say it in such a way that it makes Bale look bad. And when you say you don't want to add anything, adding that he is not injured makes you look devious and manipulative.

I don’t think any party in this situation have covered themselves in glory tbh. Zidane looks like a prick. Bale looks completely disinterested and switched off from football (club football anyway), if he’s not happy then request a transfer. Their spoilt rotten fan base for whom nothing is a ever good enough. Win 4 CL’s out of 5 which has never been done before and he’s STILL booed. Still not sure how the fudge they won all those CL’s as they weren’t even that good of a team, from memory they only won the league once in that spell, finished 3rd one of those years. They just got the job done. Definitely the weakest team to win back to back.

They won them largely due to Bale.

2 of the finals yes, Bale scored the winner in 2 of them. He really needs to leave Franco’s club. It doesn’t show a lot of ambition on his part. I know they have treated him terribly and he almost got a transfer last summer which fell through but he needs to force the issue now if he has any drive or ambition. Him and his agent went out of their way and then some to get out of Spurs, where is that determination now? I can’t imagine Messi or Ronaldo being content with collecting their wages and playing golf for 12 months. He’s still got a few more years at the top.

I think an argument could be made that Ronaldo is taking the money now too. Juve are a big club, but they are not as big as Madrid, was it ambition for his CV that took him to Italy or money, the appointment of Pirlo is a gamble too.

Messi probably won't win another CL with Barca, for 5 years they have lurched from one embarrassing European defeat to another. He is never linked with a move, is this all his loyalty or, like Bale, is he paid more than any other club could afford?

Zidane doesn't appear to be on the same page as the Madrid ownership, ownership that seem to have a lot of love for Bale, if Zidane goes (and not winning the CL is normally enough to get the Madrid manager fired), chances are that Bale would once again be a key player for them, he's also earning a fudge ton of money.

I don't think the three situation are that far apart, and right now, which of the three really has the best chance of winning the CL next season...

The transfer fell through because the Real board blocked the deal. Zidane said he wanted Bale out, Bale's people arranged a deal with Jiangsu, and at the last moment Perez pulled the plug. It was supposedly over the transfer fee, but they must have known it was low, as that was the only way to get someone to pay his wages. Seems Bale is caught in the middle.

I think it was the ambition to win the CL with three clubs in different countries that took Ronaldo to Juventus (he was earning buckloads anyway). He's probably aware that this would further embellish his CV versus Messi's and how they are ranked by history.

fair point, could well be

As above, I think Ronaldo wanted a new challenge, achieved everything he could at Franco’s club. The money also helped I agree, money talks.

I think Juve, Barca and Real are at a similar level tbh. All of them could win the CL with a bit of luck and a good draw but they’re all worse than Liverpool, Emirates Marketing Project and Bayern who are the best clubs in Europe for me.

Bale should come back to England IMO. He could play for any team. Same as Ronaldo, he’s achieved everything he can in Spain. Their fans are spoilt brats. Any of the big 6 would take him if he would be willing to relax his wage demands.

Whatever happens it’s clear Bale is not beloved at Franco’s club, at least with the fans. If they don’t like him after scoring the winner in 2 CL finals they never will. He could come back to London and any team would take him. Even if he went up North GHod forbid to Manchester or Merseyside, he’d be relatively close to his beloved Wales. He knows the premier league. He would still be successful here I believe.

I agree re Ronaldo. I think he’s obsessed with him wanting to be better than Messi and with how people perceive him, in other words he wants everyone to rank him higher than Messi. Whereas I think being the best just comes natural to Messi, I’m not saying he doesn’t care about Ronaldo but I would find it hard to believe he is as motivated to compete with him as Ronaldo is with Messi.
