The Right Back Thread

Would we have the patience for Walker now? Most didn't have patience for him back then! It took him a few seasons to become appreciated. Probably a sign that we're a different more advanced club - an unexperienced Walker would not be what we need now.

Moura, Sarr, though not defenders have Walker-like pace. If we're going to play Aurier in a more attacking role, then we may as well have a potent attacking player in there imo. Of course, they have to defend too. Everyone does.

Regardless of what Walker did (or should I say, didn't ) do with the ball, I'd say many would have preferred him over who has filled in since he left.?

Walker like pace is not the issue it's the power of WAlker and for any dominating FB that is so valuable.

What you suggest is correct if we are looking at the immediate situation with RB and Aurier and the way we play him. What we need to do is think beyond that and re-think the right sided approach completely. The right player can do all that on his own (eg Robertson at Liverpool).

I didn't want to mention Walker as it may polarise the conversation BUT him and Rose is what we require power wise and need get back too, but hopefully players with better assist potential.
I think some people got a reality check when Walker left after seeing what we’ve been left with on the right hand side since.

I’m “hoping” Sessengnon gets a run at LB, I know he hasn’t played there much but hopefully Jose tells him this summer that LB is his position and to concentrate on that.

I think you could be on to something - though there must be reasons why managers don't use wingers as auxiliary full backs more often if it were that obvious.

Well we’re unbalanced with Aurier at the moment. Ideally you have two fullbacks who can defend and attack, and exploit available space on the left or right. The Aurier setup with Davies staying back is probably a temporary measure.

Though we miss Poch, Mourinho will rationalise the squad better than Poch was able to. He’ll be clearer on who’s first team and who isn’t.

I think Moura could play an attacking fullback role. He would need to adapt to defending and settle. But he could be pretty good there imo.

I don't think he could. The fullbacks under Mourinho are sat within the box when defending with the wide midfielders dropping into the space they vacate. I don't think that would suit Moura and is very different to the role he played against Arsenal.

Obviously that wouldn’t be an attacking FB position. In such a setup we’d play a defensive player like Tanganga who is there to defend. With Davies effectively a 3rd CB in more open games, why play Aurier when Moura or another is more potent?

Because Aurier isn't as bad defensively as he was at his worst. And even compared to his worst a winger with little to no experience playing as a full back is likely to be worse (until proven otherwise at least).

There are players that transition from wingers to full backs. It usually takes quite a while before they get the hang of it.

If you have examples to the contrary I would be happy to hear them.

We tried it with sissoko
It was Brighton away
All their goals came via attacks down our right

Sonny in the cup semi final....:D:D:D:D

But that wasn’t with us
That change happened on loan but is relevant
Happened over a full season away on loan. And after he came back he got loads of criticism at first and still took a while to get used to that position iirc. He was a younger player, so developing, so it's only natural that it took some time, but at the same time younger players are often more adaptable.

I don't think that example makes it any more likely that Moura will suddenly will be a good right back.

Our fans never endeared themselves as much to him as he deserved IMO

And I agree, Moura would not be a good right back.

How many senior games did he play in an advanced position? From memory, none, he was a left winger as a kid and has played his full senior career at LB (bar the odd game in CM).

Either way, it was very early in his career. If you can name one who switched at 27, let's talk.

You'll have to check the ages...how about Ashley Young, Evra, Alaba, Bellerin, Marcelo....

Ashley Young is a very good shout, also Valencia. The others you mention I wasn’t aware they were more attacking players before (not saying it’s not correct, just that I didn’t realize).
