Best music streaming service.

All good. If you like heavily compressed music, missing most of its bass and treble.

alac is lossless isn’t it?

not that it matters for my ears, Metallica and Maiden from a Walkman in the 80’s ruined them years ago

Yes it is. Apple lossless audio codec.

They don’t actually stream or sell in Alac though. The only way to get that is to burn your cd into iTunes and select alac as the file type to create.

(caveat, unless they’ve changed it for purchases in recent times - but as I binned iTunes off yonks ago I don’t know anymore!)

So no one has any examples of China or Russia using their own social media or Huawei as a backdoor. Intelligence agencies and the media don’t have any evidence of it occurring at all.

However, as you say there is evidence of Facebook being used for political manipulation and mass data capture. Yet we don’t fear Facebook we fear the ‘foreign’ Hauwei, VK, TikTok...it’s classic fear of the other and, if you look at it logically as MI5 did, it’s irrational. Boris U-turned after initially taking MI5s advice that Huawei 5G was safe; to keep the US and ERG MPs sweet.

I fear Facebook's reach and many others do for the sway they have on public opinion. They have good PR which while occasionally punctured generally shields them from the worse of the bad press they should receive. Left it years ago, though in fairness I was an intermittent user at best.
No surprise on Boris being a sniveling subservient taco though. It is his tagline.

I'm a bit more interested in the cyber warfare slant myself, but China has been naughty for a while with it's own population -> https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/01/technology/china-uighurs-hackers-malware-hackers-smartphones.html

It is fascinating. As an emotional response one wouldn't fear and steer clear of Facbook - you wouldn't think visiting it would somehow "infect" you? Which was the response to using VK. There is a similar emotional response to Huawei and TikTok. Yet there is no evidence of the nation-state they were produced in abusing them to spy.

The Chinese government send Uighurs to detention camps, enforced labour camps and Uighurs can not move around freely in China. The state spying on them via Uighur apps is the least of their problems. That said, do you think western intelligence services don't hack into Jihadist's mobile phones or track people using mobile devices? Would you mind them tracking jihadists travelling to fight in Syria or planning an act of terrorism? The US, UK and others probably have even more sophisticated means of tracing fundamentalists phones.

I steer clear of them all, to be honest. This site is about as close as I get to posting on social media.

(full disclosure - I do looks at a few tweets but never post)

Couldn't get on with Spotify either. Spent ages liking a load of bands, played music I liked for a while and it still kept recommending crap.

How you finding the transition to Youtube music? The algorithm is excellent but I am still not 100% sold

I've tried them all now for a period of time, and I'm sticking with Spotify. The interface is by far the best, the search engine works, unlike apple music search, which is a total disaster! You have to write exactly correct what you are searching for to get any results! Kind of defies the purpose of a search..

Anyway, I love the sound quality of Tidal, but all in all, Spotify has a lot more than any of the others, both in terms of functions, and music collection. Quite a lot of the music I have in my playlists, was not available in Tidal, Apple or Google. So for me, Spotify took a relatively clear victory. But it's getting closer.

Don't like the design one bit. No matter how much I use it, it all seems clunky no matter what I'm trying to do.

The algorithm is excellent though, so at least I can just find a song, start a radio and walk away.

Most of my listening is done in the car. I'm fortunate enough to have a fairly good sound system in there so I've bought an old iPod Classic and started filling it with lossless files. Sounds a lot better than anything over Bluetooth does.

I'm tempted to find a Flac file tracker and move across as long as I can get my content which isn't the mainstream trash.

I've got a Tidal trial and it doesn't have the variety on it and the sound quality isn't as good as Play.

Google need to listen their small but loyal fanbase and keep play going.

I've managed to find torrents for the older and more popular stuff, but much of my library is still in mp3
