FIFA: Destroying Football Since 1904

It makes you wonder what you have to do to get prosecuted in Switzerland as they have looked after the money of virtually every dictator/despot in living memory.

On Friday, Arsène Wenger, Fifa’s chief of global football development, even suggested a new football calendar could be decided by December, with alternate World Cups and Euros played from 2028 onwards.

Wenger also floated the idea of qualifying matches being played in October and perhaps March, with groups of four playing six games and the top two going through to a summer final. The players, meanwhile, would then get 25 days’ rest before starting again.

“We must recognise that society is demanding more and more high-stakes and emotional matches,” Wenger explained to L’Équipe. “Even Euro 2020, which took place two months ago, seems far away. I think that the football public no longer wants the qualifiers to last a year and a half. They can be concentrated in four or five weeks.”

The big matches obviously get more viewers, but that doesn't mean we want them all the time. The only thing Arsene is right about is getting rid of the current breaks during the season and play the qualifiers as a mini tournament instead, maybe in the summer breaks in odd years instead of packing in more tournaments? Less time wasted on internationals means more time for a proper winter break as well.

I've always said this. Take the internationals out of the league breaks, and put them at the end instead, same number of games. National games don't interfere with club football. Team get a concentrated time together, rather than the odd game here and there, and club managers can be national managers for the duration of the qualifying or cup tournament in between seasons. As it stands, we get the best players, but not the best managers in international competition. Also, have a 'brick team' cup while the big national sides have their qualifying tournament - means the brick teams can actually win something (with say the finalists qualifying for the proper cup), and they don't clog up the proper football.

Uefa president bricking it. If this goes ahead and the esl comes back (in a different acceptable format), that's the end of uefa.

European Leagues 'unanimously oppose' biennial World Cup plans | SuperSport – Africa’s source of sports video, fixtures, results and news

The body representing professional competitions in Europe, European Leagues, said on Thursday it was against FIFA's proposal of staging a World Cup every two years.

On Wednesday, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the extensive shake-up would cut out "too many meaningless matches".

European Leagues, whose board of directors included members from La Liga, the Premier League, the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Serie A, met on Tuesday.

"On this occasion, the Leagues have firmly and unanimously opposed any proposals to organise the FIFA World Cup every two years," the group said in a statement.

"The Leagues will work together with the other stakeholders to prevent football governing bodies to take unilateral decisions that will harm domestic football which is the foundation of our industry and of utmost importance for clubs, players and fans across Europe and the world," it added.

Earlier this week, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin warned hosting the World Cup every two rather than four years would "dilute" the tournament.

Fans from across the globe were also in favour of keeping the World Cup status quo.

"The overwhelming majority of fans oppose a biennial World Cup cycle, and if FIFA had bothered to engage with us on the subject, they would have known this to be the case," 58 national fan organisations across the sport's six confederations said in a joint-statement on Tuesday.

"Why abandon almost a century's worth of tradition on a whim and with no evidence that it will improve the global game?" it added.

Pity that europe will be outvoted. The rest of the world want this 166 countries voted for the feasability study.

Things are going to come to a head. We're already seeing clubs refusing players going on international duty.
