Jan Vertonghen

Too bad we only manage to keep Vertonghen until this season. Just a few years ago, Vertonghen and Alderweireld were one of the best defensive partnership in PL and Europe. Unfortunately, we have failed to win any trophies despite having a good defence. Maybe if we had won the CL last season, Vertonghen would have stayed longer.

We'd have still needed to replace Vertonghen though - just that we'd have had a bit more cash to be able to do so

Has now likely played his last home match for us. It’s a shame that he played his last home match in front of zero supporters. He deserved more given the length of time that he played for us, and the general high level of his performances for us during that time. One of our best defenders in the modern era.

Yes this is a shame, hopefully we will get a chance to see him back at the Lane before he retires.

My thoughts as well, a real class player who i always enjoyed watching.

He wouldn’t be the first player to leave without the deserved fanfare (think Dembele most recently) but it will certainly be sad if his last involvement for us is in a behind closed doors fixture at the end of a strange and disrupted season.
A stalwart for us in the Poch era. I hope we get to see him back at the Lane some day.
Sooper, super Jan.

In general. He almost defined the 2010s for us, thinking about it - and he was key to a lot of our best moments. He was the core of the subsequent Belgian quartet we built up, and he became an absolute Rolls Royce of a defender who miraculously made up for the loss of Ledley.

Don't think he was ever the 'leader' type that some CBs are - don't think Toby ever was, either. But together, they somehow worked, and worked wonderfully, one perfectly covering for the other. And together, they did what I thought was impossible - they supplanted Woodgate and King as the best defensive partnership I've ever seen at Spurs. :)

I'll miss the guy - both the elegant player, and the eloquent, easy-going man with more than a bit of cheekiness in him. :p

Au revoir, SuperJan.

It looks like he's going back to Ajax, hopefully, we'll get to play them sometime soon and give him the send-off that we can't give him today

Only once fans are allowed in the ground. Would love to be there for that, and for them to do a one off replica shirt like was knocking about on here a few years ago. Spurs shirt inspired by ajax, money going to charity.

Source? (I thought I’d read a week or so ago that move wasnt on the cards)

It will be disappointing if we let Vertonghen go. Alderweireld and Vertonghen will always be out best defensive partnership. Who can forget the way they made our defence the best in the league by conceding the least goals in 2017. But too bad we failed to win the league despite having the best defence in the league. Can understand why Vertonghen wants to leave as he has been with us for 8 seasons now but has failed to win any trophy. With him being 33 now, he must be desperate to win a trophy before he retires. Wish we can make him stay longer.
