Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

1. Its a fair point, and one that i have some sympathy for. But maybe you are rich enough to be an internationalist. But most people don't have that opportunity. However, London is the greatest city in the world, on that we agree.
2. But they do vote. So thats a mute point
3.i would say that it would be the responsibility of governments to force SM companies to do that... otherwise SM companies will take the cheapest option and hide behind free speech.
4. If it is allowing the manipulation of democracy then to say 'its just social media' is not a position that I would hope our security forces to be holding... or any person who has affection for this country.
Regarding point 3, what do you think our government can do to US-based companies running over a global network to make them comply?

In response to point 4, Russian interference is a problem. It's less of a problem than people taking social media seriously. Wipe out all the bots and there's still thousands of times as many cranks out there spouting their flimflam just as loudly.

Oh, and Paris pips London to the top spot IMO.

3. Stop them being able to sell advertising to companies operating in the UK, unless they comply.

4.Agree with the cranks... but just because one problem maybe as bad or worse, doesn't mean we should ignore the other problem.

Amsterdam for me, spent some time there in the middle 70's great time was had

It's turned into a bit of a tourist playground in the center now. Like a theme park. Was probably more fun in the 70s. Went for the first time in the late 90s and met a fella on the ferry who let us have his squat flat for free while we were there. Awesome city.

The interference in voting is a funny one for me. There was a guy from the Statesman on BBC yesterday who said the Scottish referendum was interfered with by the Russians (or tried) but people had such a strong view of stay or leave that it did not work in the slightest. Thats not playing down the impact or potential impact just an interesting titbit.

The difficulty with social media and influence on democracy is that be it Russia, news outlet, blogger or individual person its hard to stop miss information and someone can start a rumour or a false hood as a individual as effectively as a country and by the end of the day it can be spread by famous people and gather pace, how do you stop that?

I see it all the time when famous people with 100s of Thousands of followers have shared a video or a picture to drive a political point only for it to be found wrong, be it by year or circumstance etc. There were loads flying about when BLM hit its heights recently where people were sharing videos with a false explanation, these things can easily cause peoples to have a clear POV based on what they have seen.

So although this Russia and press stuff is a problem I do believe as humans we have a few barriers to protect us which include our own mind and our own ability to research extensively what we read to make up or our minds. Its like a tipster on twitter telling me a certain horse is going to win a race, to I believe them? Or do I have the ability to read the form, choose how much I want to bet, research the tipster and ultimately decide on my own with the resources I have it I want to have a bet.

One of the issues the human races treating social media in a way you don't every day life. I worked with a famous Canadian tech head and he said posting pictures of your kids on the web is the same as putting them on lamposts for randoms to see, you do one but not the other and he is right. And information works where if you read it on twitter from BOB who you dont know you believe but if he came up to you on the street and said it you would laugh it off. So alot of this is on the public, not the government to deal with, we have a personal responsibility that I have noticed recently people want to take less responsibility of and hand over to the government so there is some blame to attach.

The Government can do more, all governments can, however people do need to take more personal responsibility for things that affect them, like health, lifestyle, money, work, crime etc etc

Ok so the russia report!

I dont get it, I really don't. Arnt you brexiteers supposed to be super patriots?

I'm second generation, but I love this country. There is nowhere I would rather live... and I have many options.

I'm not English but like i said I am British, my grandad fought in ww2 and Suez (where America fu*ked us by the way) and won medals, that is one but by far not the only reason I feel patriotic towards the uk.

So can any self respecting british citizen and anyone who loves this country be ok with the fact that a hostile nation seems to have perverted our democracy and the institutions that are supposed to ward against that haven't investigated that?

Do you guys hate the EU more than you love your country?

I am obviously pro EU... but only because I believe being in it is the best for Britain... otherwise I wouldn't give a s hit.

But even with that if a hostile country potentially swang such an important vote the other way, I promise you I would have a problem with it.

Since when did we become so small time that other nations could fudge with our democracy... that what we do (ashamedly) with other nations.

I think seeing this post you are writing your own narrative that is not exactly reflective of what is being said.

The point is that in terms of Russia's interference in the elections and I am sure in far more dangerous areas, however as with all cyber related crime I put trust in our security services who are world class to continue and carry on with their work that is a daily task with not only Russia but many nations. We ourselves are no doubt using the web to interfere and spy on other nations. So it is less about not caring but more realising this is all one big long fight, not a time to jump up and down about something specific.

As for the EU comments I think its a interesting thing to mention as I saw someone on the news today liken Russias interference in elections to Germany car manufacturers getting unfair advantages and leg ups in the market due to fudged EU regulations that protected their industries, Merkel putting spanners in the works to protect BMW and Audi was famous at the time. Equally a form of espionage so conversely, your level of fury with Russia should be the same on the EU.

I’m a big fan of Paris too! Prob my number 1 city but never been to NY.

I'm the opposite - haven't spent much time in Paris, but find it impossible to look past New York on this debate. If I had a magic wand & could erase the events of the past few months, it'd be the first place I'd head to after doing it.

I do agree with you about those who form their opinions from what they read on SM ( especially T w A A t er) You have to feel sorry for those that do.

Yeh I do, those that are genuinely of that intellect and I mean that in a non condescending way I feel bad for. But there are those that should know better. There are also those of high intellect pushing crap who should know better

Havana, New York, Moscow (in the summer), London, Amsterdam, Naples.

Not sure how I’d get that down to a top 3. Someone needs to start a top 3 cities thread.

Havana is on my bucket list once the kids are older.

Naples is a dirty, crime-ridden, poverty hole. Holidaying there is like going to London and ignoring Mayfair for Harlesden.
