He's been linked for a long time. We have good relations with QPR and we could do a lot worse than send Parrott in the opposite direction, on loan for next season, to sweeten the deal.
Talk of place and West Ham being keen now and they may move quicker if we’re tied up looking at other areas
Eze for me would be a great signing

But what's the value of those other stats to evaluate a DM? Particularly when compared to other aspects such as positioning, discipline, concentration, consistency, things that are hard to measure using stats.

Then there's the point that there are a lot of other stats available to those that want to pay for them. I agree, we don't get the raw data, but that doesn't mean what we do get is completely meaningless.

And, again, a higher number does not necessarily mean better. One of our very best players in recent decades in that position was Carrick, not exactly an all action ball winning DM.

To me the comparison with Ward Prowse should end with the conclusion that Ward Prowse is also quite good at some of these things. Good for him, good for Southampton. Tells us little to nothing about Hojbjerg who as far as I can tell has good defensive stats.

Or do you have some kind of threshold in mind that Hojbjerg should have reached on these stats to be "good enough"?

To be fair, Carrick's ball-winning stats were actually very good. From 2009-14, when he had at least 20 starts for Man U (WhoScored doesn't go back any earlier unfortunately):

Still, I do agree that big numbers of tackles and interceptions aren't the only important thing for a DM (and that Hojbjerg's are big enough, especially to play alongside someone like Lo Celso who makes a lot of tackles himself). As you allude to I think tracking runners, not diving into tackles, blocking passing lanes and holding players are also really important, and don't necessarily show up in stats.

He is still very young. It was a slightly strange signing though, quite a lot of money to pay for a player that the manager didn’t want. I can only assume he was a David Pleat recommendation and to be fair to him Pleaty has a decent record.
And he needs time with us as a club to judge
Loans are all about experience which he will have gained even if not playing time

I have to say that personally I’d happily sell Tubby and buy Eze and a capable DM with the money. That would improve two areas quickly assuming Eze can step up

We’ve been linked to Zaniolo again. I’d like to see us sign him. Sell NDombele to the highest bidder, and bring in Zaniolo. After all, doesn’t seem like Ndombele has a future with us, so may as well cash in and replace. For the record, I’d like to see Ndombele succeed with us but it’s not looking likely.

He smacks me of the sort of player who won't adapt to the PL, or who will fail to live up to the price tag or hype. Perhaps its just because he'd be coming from Roma, but I'd expect him to underwhelm like Lamela. I hope we avoid him. Doesnt look anything special to me

I love him, outstanding touch and shooting ability.

I also think the ‘home grown’ panic kicked in a little so we went for it.
Which does make the potential selling off of players like KWP all the more odd.

Have there been any further changes to the homegrown rules lately? Are we still OK for numbers?
No, I think we’re hitting problems on both local and European thresholds. Danny Rose will leave as well.

Keeping and rapidly developing KWP (and Whiteman) would therefore make a lot of sense to me.

We’ll likely need to sell off a few HG who haven’t hit the level, but hopefully we could get decent fees even to lower leagues for CCV, Amos, Sterling, Marsh and Georgiou. £10m - £20m combined would be nice.

And replace with Eze....

Vorm will be gone, looks like Jan will also be gone and Foyth will also probably be gone. That’s 3 overseas spots right there. I’d also punt on Gazzaniga and bring in an experienced English keeper like Hart or Foster to free up another spot.

Hart? For comedy value, yes? It would be great to have a slow keeper who can't pass well whose confidence is shot. I do like Foster though.
