There is a about a £120k difference in price between a Polestar 2 and one of those

But I might just take the Polestar 1 over that

Doesn't look much to me, reminds me a bit of a Mustang from the front.

It has nearly half a tonne over the Rapide too, which is already a heavy car.
 
No, you lose the VAT, unless you lease, in which case you can reclaim 50%. However, you can claim the corporation tax 400% in-year for an EV, and the VAT element is obviously reclaimable against CT.

BIK is 0% this year, 1% next, 2% after. There's a fair hope that the 0% or the 1% rate might extend to try and get fleet managers to commit to leccy.

Although I'd like to get into an electric car, unless I move house or office, or the charging infrastructure improves in London e.g. some charging points on my street, a hybrid seems the only option. The Polestar is 140k. I wouldn't. I don't drive all that much, and it is just a car!

For less money than all of these options, you could purchase, restore, and add an electric motor to one of these:

I think we have a winner, we can lock this thread now, the original DS is a work of art and IMHO the pinnacle of French car design

My only problem with it is, I don't know if I could bring myself to modify such an iconic car


And I'm now going to spend the rest of the afternoon researching how to electrify a DS

Hehe. I wouldn't have any qualms as the original engine is nothing special. Electric engines combined with the air suspension would be fitting.

I don't know what compromises you'd have with the batteries/range. The engine weight would be replaced by batteries I guess. Whether adding more battery weight (than the engine) would affect the driving dynamics I don't know? It's not a performance car, so presumably could get away with some extra ballast.

I think you'd just compromise the range. It has been done. Don't forget the engine is fair weight itself, so removing the block and replacing it pound for pound with lithium iron already gives you a bank of batteries. The original car is front-wheel drive, so provided you don't add too many batteries it should be okay. But yes interesting...

This was an interesting article on driving electric. The cars not really the issue, the infrastructure is. And i think we'll be years away from having decent infrastructure (especially now with COVID).

I looked at the X5 Hybrid which i like, but it's £10k extra, will i really save £10k over the course of 5-7 years in driving it? Hard to see that i will...

There are loads of those articles in the general news media. Journalist is lent electric car for weekend. Obviously, he doesn’t have a domestic charger. Journalist has to struggle with unfriendly charging apps and duff chargers and range anxiety. Journalist bashes out a kiloword about how EVs may be fun to drive but it’s worth waiting a few years until there’s contactless charging under every roadway. The experience for owners with 7kw charging points in their driveways is rather different.
 
The 993s really are beautiful things. Like a fine watch. Aesthetically they are pretty sorted for me. Though more modern than the 964 (which suffer oil leaks) it is by no means a modern car. Big steps forward we’re made from 90s to naughties cars. While I love the aesthetic, I didn’t instantly fall in love with driving a 993. Maybe it would grow on me.

The earlier 911s are so elementary they are quite special to drive. No electronic aids or computers. The steering is so light when moving despite no power steering - all the weight is behind you. Lots of feedback and very visceral. I am gagging to get out in it and do some trips.

You can get a 987S for less than £10k now. I would guess his mods add up to around £15k on top if you ignore the bits he took off and the exhaust. What he doesn't mention ( at least not near enough to the first page to grab my attention) is the need to spend around £4-5k on a closer ratio gearbox. Even so, less than £30k for a track-ready Porsche that laps faster than a GT4 is pretty impressive.

Had the briefest look at the link. Will go back to that. Interesting to see that stiffening the car too much lost him traction on the track. Until recently people were after ridged cars, but you want some Flex (especially on uneven roads) to find more grip in corners.

Not so much on a track car. Modern tracks are very, very flat and dealing with bumps is far less of an issue than weight transfer.

Going through the thread a little further and he's added a cage, uprated discs and lines, etc. That's another £4k there.
 
The reason a lot of track projects get sold with all the toys added is because the owner can bolt on the farkles but then can’t set the car up properly now that everything is fully adjustable

The amount of track time it takes a novice to get a baseline setup (and a lot never do) should not be underestimated, oh and then you need to dial it into each new track. So you need a data logger, be able to understand what the data is saying and be able to interpret that into setting changes and of course understand how suspension actually works

So after having a deposit on an X5, i pulled out. It's a fantastic car but i couldn't see the additional £10k value in the X5 over the X3.

Soooooo, picked up the X3 M40i and boy, this thing FLIES. 0-60 in under 5 secs (it's an SUV FFS!). Switching the engine on from a cold start, it is LOUD. Chuffed.
