Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen's house was raided by four armed men and his family threatened at knifepoint when the defender was with #thfc in Leipzig earlier this week. [Daily Mail]

No great surprise, really. While I think he still makes our squad as a backup CD (and occasional LB), I certainly wouldn't begrudge him a big money move to a slower-paced league. A couple of years raking it in then off to pasture at Ajax to do his coaching badges.

He's been a great servant to our club and a symbol of the Pochettino era.

Shame if true about the ankle, also disappointed to see it leaked it while he is looking for a new contract.
I always though he was more likely to maintain fitness than Toby despite being older and was hoping to see him take a coaching role at some point. He’s a rare breed of a cultured defender who knows when to play and when to defend.

Ah it's a shame but if we were holding on to him, it would be out of nostalgia/loyalty. He's well past his best.

I'll be sorry to see him go. He was a fantastic defender for us despite some reservations along the way. At one point, him and Toby were the best partnership in Europe. He was also very well versed in the dark arts. Good luck to him for the future.

I absolutely agree.

If Jan really wanted to stay for another year without demanding ridiculous money, I really think we should be keeping him around. He's experienced and seems the sort who would help develop the youngsters. Also, he probably owns the Catan set. With all the expansions.

That said, if he's demanding assurances of match time and so on, it would be best for everyone if he left on good terms.

If that statement is true, as a club cannot moan when a superstar wants to up and leave. Jan has been a tremendous servant for the club, a contract should be offered to him.
He's not been a 2 season wonder - just look back through this thread, he's been relatively injury free and stayed (when he could have left) through many different changes in managerial personal and systems.
I understand there is limited room for sentiment in business today, but maybe that's where the fall down in connections are.

I kind of agree with this decision, if its correct. We have two ageing CBs and we wouldnt want to have to replace both in the same summer. If we sign a new CB, and then go into next season with Toby, New guy, Dier and Sanchez as main 4 CBs then its probably better to have Tanganga picking up experience from games as 5th choice. I'm not sure paying a big fat salary to a 5th choice CB makes sense either.

Always really rated Jan, and he's been a great servant for the club, but times move on

I agree.... except Tanganga is higher up the list. In fact no reason he can't push the need for a new CB down the priority list.
