Redknapp's Autobiography

Harry reckons he was offered the job when Jol was on his way but turned it down??....and was planning to turn it down the second time, after Ramos, as he was happy at Pompey BUT when they heard the comp package was £5m were actually happy for him to come to us.

Didn't ever know about the first time he was offered it though.

Of course with HR it could be gonad*s:D

What do you mean " it could be" ;)

He also managed to mention 2 points from 8 games... he's desperate for that to be on his gravestone

With the players he had at his disposal you could argue that he massively under-achieved and was the polar opposite of poch when it came to integrity and character

I think that's a stretch. Even if you think he under-achieved, and I don't, you couldn't argue he massively under-achieved.

On the second point, I couldn't agree more.

I think his integrity is rightly questioned but I do think it clouds what he did for us. If a manager does better than his predecessor and successor it’s hard to say he under achieved. Harry’s greatest strength is keeping it simple and I think a lot of players enjoy playing for him. He managed Kings situation well and quite a few players emerged or played their best footy under him.
I’m sure it was his extra curricular behaviour and possibly salary expectations that caused Levy to go in a ‘different direction’ as 4th, CL QF and 4th again would have been good enough for most Spurs managers to keep their jobs in the previous 20 years. I don’t remember anyone calling for him to go at the end of his last season, whereas even we’ll liked managers like Poch and Jol had dissenters when their results dropped below expectations.

Bale
Modric
King
Vdv
Lennon/ parker/ Defoe/ gallas/Gomes /k Walker/ sandro/ adebayor/ kaboul/huddlestone/ kranjcar/ dawson/ Rose/ Livermore

4x brilliant players and 14+ good to very good players

Bale was hardly tearing up trees when Harry arrived and neither was Modric although he was finding his feet and was always going to be a top, top player. ‘Triffic lads but Harry did help make them. King was injured quite a bit at that point. You could have a lot of debate about the others but I think it’s beyond debatable to say that some (Rose and Walker for example) were very raw and Harry gave them a start.

Did we have better players than United, Chavski, Arsenal and City at that time? Very debatable. Harry is a crook but he did a great job for me and I loved watching us play under him. Third behind Poch and BMJ in the list of our managers over the last 30 years and he’d probably be second if I wasn’t still in love with the big cuddly Dutchman.

We did undeniably play brilliant football under his "go out there and express yourself" style of management...I loved it, was a great period for us

But, we still had that soft underbelly which he did nothing to address despite having the tools to do so

In my opinion he was a manager incapable of getting more out of his squad than simply having a bunch of talented people playing with freedom... think about the quality of squad fergie had in his last season at United and what they achieved

Bale and modric were brilliant players, not being utilised properly by a manager who had no tactical nous (in my opinion). Of course he'll BS that he intentionally played bale and modric out of position as some master plan to help them develop.... but several players have said that Redknapp never bothered with tactics, he simply asked them to go and do their thing

And claiming that he handled King well.... sorry, any manager (and I include nimbuses like donkey adams) would have done the same

He had some incredible talents at his disposal and he didn't achieve anywhere close to what he should have done

This is semantics really as I'll admit that at the time it felt great...'his' team achieved things that seemed beyond our reach at the time, but surely you can admit, in hindsight, that he should have had that squad properly challenging in the way that poch did? You can look back with fondness and still think that it wasn't as good as it should have been, no?

Good debate by the way. I've always had mixed feelings about him. Even when he was the manager... something I really didn't like about him

Thinking about it makes me feel sadder that things didn't work out with poch, as he was perfect in every way for us (even down to the press conferences that were so boring and unclear that nobody listened to them.... whereas rent-a-quote you had to watch for fear of him saying something stupid)

He was an embarrassment to the club.

No matter whether you can see him for what he is or if you think he's a talented manager, there's no denying he was far too low rent for a club like Spurs.

I think that's a very good post even though I disagree with most of it. I will say, Harry probably should have come closer to silverware. The 2010 FA Cup semi was one of the biggest disappointments of the last 30 years because we were playing a broken club with no money, shattered unity and a team that was cobbled together. But as low as I felt that day, right after we went out and beat Chelsea and Arsenal to be put in the driving seat for top 4. And that game up at City. We won a game that really, really mattered. Incredible night.

I agree with Scara's view that he was too low rent for us. I was disgusted when he got the job. I was disgusted with how he carried on for the last six months. But when I look at his reign, I look at what he took over and where he left us. And I look at how he had me feeling during his reign. He improved us hugely, got us to the CL and we were arguably the best team in the league to watch. Despite myself and despite what I think of Harry, I'll always love his reign. But I can understand the opposing viewpoint.

We didn’t have a title winning side. He got us 4th twice which was pretty decent because other than Modric, Bale and VDV the rest of the squad were so so. Some good players and probably the most fun I’ve had supporting Spurs but they weren’t world beaters which is why other than the aforementioned everyone else's next moves were to nothing clubs. We finished above newly rich City and then a Champions League winning Chelsea which wasn’t bad going.

As @DeanoAustin says, we didn’t massively underachieve what so ever. We should have finished above Arsenal in one of the two seasons but never in a million years does that squad finish above Ferguson’s United or Ancelotti’s Chelsea, nor does it knock out Mourinho’s Chelsea with ten men.

Jol, Ramos, Santini, Pleat, Hoddle, Graham and Gross all were too because until Redknapp took us into the Champions League most of Europe probably didn’t even know who we were.

Yep, thankfully he did not put us in financial trouble like he did at his other clubs. (Thanks to Levy).

An excellent point, and yes, well done to Levy indeed because he stood up to pressure for sure.

It is bizarre. City away/Crouchfest is absolutely among my very best memories as a supporter, the sheer caveman JOY of the away end that night was something we had not felt for such a long time it was absolutely overwhelmingly brilliant, even that 4-4 at the Death Star was an epic night out, not to mention Inter at home, but equally, his failure to secure CL in 2012 when we had an excellent side that IMO should've challenged for (and with a better tactician might well have won) the Premiership, not to mention his knicker-hitching for the England job at the worst possible moment were things I could never ever forgive. I get annoyed when people blame Chelski's winning the CL for us not getting into the CL that season. It was HIS fault 100%.

Just to be clear, are you suggesting that because Scara said Redknapp was too "low rent" for us, you are saying the above were too? Mate. I have to explain. He means "low-rent" in character and how he carried himself on and off the bench. Say whatever you like about everyone in your list, but none of them were "low-rent"...even the Gooner scumbag could never, ever have been accused of being "low rent', he actually always carried himself impeccably and presented himself with class. Martin Jol was the classy version of Redknapp, a man who had a great sense of humor and some irreverence but who was literate, intelligent and knew how to carry himself. Listen to Redknapp on the Crouch podcast; he is LAUGHING about his relative illiteracy...come on. Not my club.

I would agree with all of that; the guy was a liar and a crook and it always makes me laugh when i hear the rubbish about him being in with a chance for the England job. The truth is ( and i posted that at the time)he NEVER had a chance of the England job, the press wanted him and his cronys in the game who had him on speed dial " good old rent a quote" kept telling everyone he was the right man for the job. They did the same thing with Keegan and (we all know how the turned out) would never have gone down that road again..

I know for a fact that the FA never even talked about him for the job and would never have given it to him.
