Some of us at least - an ever dwindling number it has to be admitted - can still revel in the memory of watching Spurs win the Double and all those other trophies before Sky came along and attempted to obliterate it completely.

This is what I just don't get. Levy is clearly a smart businessman, but the decision not to buy a centre forward looks utterly crazy. It is almost as if he would rather lose 30 - 40 million than overpay for a single player.

The manager's. I think that it is possible that we had a situation where spend in January reduced what was available in the summer and Mourinho decided not to sign a striker who would not be part of his long-term plans.

It would be very Mourinho-esque to make that decision privately and subsequently start throwing toys from his pram and people under busses as it dawns on him what a monumentally stupid fudging decision such a decision would theoretically have been!

I thought Poch only wanted to shop from the top tier, because the situation had changed from the one he started with. In hindsight, he should have been bringing through the next KWP/Dele/N'Koudou/Dier/N'Jie/Kanes (yes, 50% won't be up to the task), so that the squad did not become knackered and stagnant.
Poch was a great manager, but don't let your love of Poch and hate for Mourinho cloud your thinking.
Poch's position became untenable, and now for good or for bad we have Mourinho, who we should all get behind, and judge after he's had a preseason and season with his own team.

Appreciate the discussion, and his position had absolutely become untenable. My love and blindness prevented me from admitting that after the CL Final he should've left. He had been undermined too much already at that stage, thus the situation was a bust. I will say I don't hate Mourinho as much, more that I just feel indifferent to him. He's our manager so I support him and what he needs, but my overall passion for his work is indeed lacking.
I think one thing to note is that Poch wanted certain young players at certain times and did not get them. Remember Toby? He wanted him out. remember De Lift? We were in pole position at one point and could not make it happen in time. The clock ticks on those deals as bigger come in (as they did). Grealish was another example, and arguably in the "dele" category albeit we have to concede Dele was the greatest bargain of the last decade. I am not so sure Poch wanted top top tier more than he wanted exactly what HE wanted, and felt (reasonably enough) the he had earned the right (the Trust minutes break down how our transfer committee works).
I agree with you with regards to Mourinho and getting behind him. My only qualifier there remains what I have always felt; he will NOT tolerate pfaffing around at the board level, he will defend himself first and foremost and he will absolutely protect himself first. The game has already begun. Trust me mate, I (once again) would be delighted to be wrong!

As I understood it, early on we were in pole position. There was an understanding that unless we made the move fast others would come in. This is certainly "allegedly"...

Yes, unfortunate. I think by then the flush was busted, and if I am honest, I refused to accept that was the case and hoped he was being misquoted/being cheeky. Looking back with the clarity of hindsight, I think he saw the CL Final as the moment his five years with this project would be crowned and he could thus leave with everyone on a high. Instead, I suspect he might've felt a debt of loyalty to hang in? Of course, given that it appears the relationship was a busted flush, it was the wrong move. Again, my own blindness and loyalty certainly played a major part in not seeing it. I still wish Levy had not taken him for granted and that he was still here guiding a rebuild for Mk II.

Absolutely he made mistakes. Younger manager, absolutely. But his achievements and what he got right far far far outweighs any mistakes he made for me. Dealing with Wembley for nearly two seasons was a nightmare navigated superbly; few managers could've done it IMO.

Yeah, wages mean nowt to me. It is all about who Mourinho is and what we should expect. I agree with EVERYONE who says he needs to be backed, but anyone who believes he will tolerate not getting all he asks for this summer is dreaming.

I don’t think that is unreasonable as they brought him in for a specific job
We are always linked with players early but never move for reasons I don’t know, but we’re not unique either
One thing I will say is that it seems players peak earlier and earlier now and you can see a player is gonna be good younger IMO (hence why united are happy to pay £35m for Bellingham). We don’t seem to do that so much. We have also stopped looking in the championship which is a missed trick but I digress
I don’t know why we gave Toby the contract and thought it was odd. We don’t know what he is on or what he wanted TBF but we can speculate
The classic Poch duck up for me was Rose (a player I love). He never ever made him feel like he had to leave and Jose did that in 2 weeks....
The experience and arrogance of Jose shouldn’t be underestimated. He is an a hole who gets the job done every where and I’m fully convinced he will here too by hook or crook
I’m also convinced Poch will be brilliant at his. next job but also not win anything as he can’t make those big calls because of his belief in players and people

I think Rose is a double-edged sword. Clearly on the downside BUT his level of commitment on the pitch was always outstanding; we have few of the right now. We shall see with Poch. I think he will get silverware.
I do agree, be nice to see our lower league scouting increase.
