Christian Eriksen

May I ask what Kane, Dele, Son, Toby, Verts, Lloris etc have done so much more than Eriksen in semis and finals and other big matches when we've had the chance to go top of the league for example?

Seems strange that this criticism is so often levelled at him, when almost always the entire team puts in brick performances when the stakes are really high.

I don't think you can blame one player when the whole team don't perform, after all we wouldn't singularly praise Eriksen when the whole team did perform. I think the main reason we lost semi finals and finals under Poch was because we typically had a tiny squad with little decent cover and by the end of the season we would have a mixture of injuries and fatigue and come up against teams who had spent more on having bigger, deeper squads and could come into those games fitter and fresher.

If people want to credit him with making the team tick, being our heart beat and him playing well being key to the team playing well (all quotes from various posters on here over the years?) etc then i think it's fair to say his under performance on the big stage can be considered key to the teams under performance also

Eriksen is talked up as being central to our teams performances more so than any other player, the attacking player all our play goes through - he plays well = the team plays well, well for that to be true you have to ask these questions about his performances on the big stage more than others, no?

We underperformed as a team it's not about individuals!
We have as ’a team’ in the last 18 months have especially been very Spurs like!

Not really. He is central to our teams performances clearly, he is one of our best players full stop. As are Kane, Son, Dele apparently and up until recently, supposedly our defensive rocks at the back Toby, Verts and Lloris.

Yet against Chelsea in the 4-2 in the FA cup semi, we conceded 4 goals. Kane and Dele each scored...guess who assisted both. In the Man Utd FA cup semi defeat, Eriksen assisted Alli for our goal. 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the league cup final, what did Kane do? In the semi final against a then league 1 Sheffield United, who scored multiple times to stop us getting knocked out in a ridiculously embarrassing way? What did Kane and Alli do more in the CL final?

The I think twice we had the chance to go top in the Leicester season and then choked both times, did our other attacking superstars put in better performances than Eriksen? Did the defensive players provide a wall? Or did they all collectively brick the bed most times we actually had a chance to achieve something?

I'm not saying Eriksen is particularly amazing in these situations, he's not a Ramos or Ronaldo who always seem to annoyingly pop up at vital moments in matches. But I don't see him as any worse than the likes of Kane or Alli or Son, who as far as I can remember, have never had these accusations directed at them.

The issue with Eriksen is that he clearly has the ability, his ceiling is so high you can't see it, the work rate and skill was always there, if he had the determination to match he'd be averaging around 30 a season for both goals and assists in the PL.

The reason he gets stick for the CL final is that he has more talent than the other 21 players on the pitch combined, but it didn't show.

Im not saying it's all down to him but ultimately in a system where you have a player that is so central to a teams performance them being on it or not can make a huge difference - it's why im happy to seemingly be moving away from having a playmaker and spreading the creative workload around - i think this will benefit us in the long term as one player being off his game will not effect the overall performance as much.

I know you're not saying it is all down to him, I am saying that I don't think he hides or chokes any more than Kane, Alli, Son etc, yet the accusation is fielded at him almost constantly, while the others get away with it. Any big match in which his performance isn't at least 7/10, he's accused of phoning it in or bottling it. While the others are just accused of being brick or have excuses made for them. Though I'm sure this will change as soon as one of them pipes up and asks to leave.

I also agree that we shouldn't be reliant on one player. And that is nothing to do with Eriksen for me, you should never be reliant on one player imo and even Barcelona are having this issue with Messi. Though this was a big positive for me over the past 4-5 years anyway. We moved away from having one or two superstars towards an actual team, with lots of very good players.

And @galeforce , perhaps I'm less annoyed at Eriksen because I've personally never seen him as being quite as impactful as the likes of Hazard or KDB or Silva. Maybe that's why people are getting annoyed at him. For me though, that's like being annoyed at my car for not doing 0 to 100 in 4 seconds, I'd be annoyed for something it isn't capable of doing in the first place.

Its why Hazard and Real have been making eyes at each other for years and why he moved for 80 million with one season remaining , with Real not bothering to mess around all summer. And why Eriksen is moving to Inter.

I am less tinkled with Eriksen in big matches than with Kane, Alli and Son. The last three seem to hide or was it the tactical formation - not sure. I cant trust those three in a big game for a reason especially if they have been hyped up. They perform better when unhyped.

I don't buy that. You don't get to where Eriksen has without having determination.

Averaging a combined 30 goals and assists in a season is nonsense for a player who was so much more than a pure number 10 (and indeed has anybody averaged 30 a season over any length of time?) The irony is that had Eriksen been a selfish, lazy, Ozil type number 10 player then he probably would've got somewhere near that combined 30 goals and assists, looked better in some supporters eyes along with in the eyes of the media, yet been far less of an effective player for the team and required a very specific team to be built around him instead of fitting in to just about any shape or formation.

I find it quite interesting when I watch Son play on the left of the 3 in the 4-2-3-1 for Spurs (the position that Eriksen used to occupy in what was IMO Pochettino's best team). Son plays FAR more selfishly than Eriksen, both on the ball and especially in terms of his defensive effort, where he doesn't bother to track the opposition full back all too regularly. Perhaps Son has better numbers? (I'm not sure - I haven't checked) but IMO he is a way less effective player for the team, yet I don't think I have ever seen Son's determination questioned? Maybe 3 stupid red cards for retaliation is enough to pull the wool over some supporters eyes?

In the CL final I suspect that Eriksen was simply absolutely spent physically. He is a player that is picked for every game and rarely injured, along with always being up there in terms of distance covered. I suspect there are very few people on here who have played a physical sport to a high level so very few people who understand that sometimes the mind can be willing but the body just won't allow you to translate those thoughts into actions.

Thanks for the good times Christian. Never enjoyable when a player runs down their contract but we'll within their rights to do so.
Quality player but hopefully he won't be missed.

A maestro of a player, my privilege to see him in the Spurs shirt for years.
Nothing but gratitude for exercising such skill and ability on behalf of the team I love for so long.

Looking forward to see him scoring direct from a corner next time we play Inter. Nice to see the goodwill on here for him, I’m still a little sore about what came across as a passive aggressive manoeuvre to leave.
That said he could have waited until the end of the season and go on a free and we don’t know what he was asking for or offered behind the scenes.
Sometimes I feel a player suits a club and in his case I thought were the best match for both of us. I wish him no harm and some moderate success in the walking football vets league, as long as it’s not at our expense.
