Paulo Gazzaniga

Incorrect of course.

Nowhere near this bad.

He has had spells like this too, check the Lloris thread.

Early 2018/19 season springs to mind. That mistake against Liverpool, the one against Southampton, Chelsea, Barca, in the World Cup final, the error that caused his injury.

Our choice is between mechanical limitations and erratic judgement. We need to find a better keeper.

Gazza is a good keeper, but people only tend to remember the mistakes.

In my view, his shortcomings are:

1. Slow to get down. Robbo was the same and it’s just the way some keepers are built so not much physically that can be done about it, just working on anticipation, reaction times and positioning. Which brings me to...
2. Positioning. He often seems to get his angles wrong, and certainly needs to come off his line quicker to narrow angles and shut down threats (eg Norwich’s first goal in the 2-2, when Toby was backing off, Gazza stayed back leaving vast goal targets either side of him)

He does have the feel of a reserve keeper about him though. I’d be happy for him to come into the team occasionally but not for long periods like currently. I’d sell Hugo and buy a first choice keeper with Gazza as no.2.

I dont disagree we need a new keeper - I said we should have signed Pickford from Sunderland a few years ago as competition.

He makes mistakes, but not this amount in a row and pretty much every game.

He really is not a good keeper, the issues you have raised are pretty basic and if he has not done them now he wont improve.

He also lacks bravery which a keeper needs - I dont blame him with his dreamy looks.

I rate Pope a lot. Think we could do a lot worse.
Pope is a good shout. He's not brilliant in any way, but he's what's probably most important for a GK, he's dependable. No real weaknesses, and rarely makes howlers. I'd be happy with him between the sticks. And he would add to the home grown quota.

We should be going all out for Alexander Nubel from Schalke on a bosman this summer. Would be a hard deal to do as the story is that he wants to go to Bayern but a bug contract and the promise of being first team keeper might just do the job.
