Son Heung-Min

Agreed. Verts on his day is awesome too. Both have that cultured Ajax dna. If we’re discussing their finer points, I’d ask, would Verts have been able to pick out Son for the first goal as Toby did last game?

Not as often as Alderweireld who has more accurate long passing imo. I think Vertonghen is better at the low passes through lines of pressure and at taking the ball past players. They compliment each other really well and both are very good on the ball.

Nicely taken goal but could’ve easily had a first half hat-trick with the chances N’dombele created for him and thus spared us having to chase the game only to leave space for the West Brom reject to exploit.

For two of Son's chances yesterday it looked as though he had a simple square ball across to give Kane a tap in.... Was that actually the case or was that just my perception from my seat in the South stand?

Son for me is a great example of the differing levels of coaching between the two teams last night.
Son should have at least had two in the first fifteen minutes and if I'm being very honest we should have been 3 up in fifteen minutes.
OK, players miss, but as we saw from Bayern composure is all-important. Spurs look jittery and skittish all over the pitch.
This is the story of 2019.

Certainly the chance in the 10th minute that Son hit tamely with his right foot, might’ve been better to let ball run across his body and square it to Kane for a tap-in.

Its a tough one to judge really. We have strikers with killer instincts, a bit of tunnel vision in front of goal, and for the most part thats exactly what you want.

If we start training that out of them to look for passes etc it will dull their edge, and we would likely be worse off.

Not saying Son shouldnt have passed, Id much rather he did, but am saying - what can you do?

3 goals in 17games. 1 was a deflection. All against palace.
4 goals in 18 games. Feb 10th Leicester at home
For a guy that has more shots then anyone else. That is a really poor return.
Think of how many goals wr could score if he got his head up.
In my opinion that is not good enough .

10th feb

Burnley
Chelsea
Arsenal
Southampton
Liverpool
Palace 1 goal. Deflection
Huddersfeild

I have always said it, son is a form player, when he is on form he is top class but when he isn't there is no middle ground. He is either really good or bang average.

It's a general consensus but probably not true, he scores too many goals to just be a form/streak player.

The issue for me is the system doesn't help him, we pivot around Harry and everyone else makes way (from Son to Dele, Eriksen, Lamela, Lucas) and this is where Poch has failed, Klopp has made three attacking players work, when Leicester won their title they made three attacking players work (lesser quality players), somehow we can't get a good system working that gets the best out of more than one of our attacking players (think Keane/Berbatov), we can't get a front two/three that help each other, have chemistry out of that lot?

I have said it for years, it’s a unpopular decision but I would cash in on him, those stats posted earlier say it all, he will perform at Messi or Ronaldo like levels for 15 games a season, the rest he is no better than a Andros Townsend

I would rather have a consistent player for 30-35 games a season who doesn’t reach Son’s heights but is consistent throughout the season.

I am now going to run and agree to disagree knowing the responses that are about to come in his defence.

So we've gone to a front two and his goal scoring has dipped even though he takes on most of the shots?

Makes the formational change even more baffling.

This is the catch for me.

Son works best coming off the left, IMO. It suits him, allows him to find space and to run at people.

He is very effective as a CF replacing Kane as well, which makes him an incredibly valuable squad player.

Kane works best up front, furthest forward and banging them in. He is VERY capable when dropping deeper, and can be used to good effect doing so in game, but to effectively play him there neuters him.

Which is why I cannot understand Pochs persistence with a Son/Kane front two. Kane is sacrificed to Sons benefit, but neither are at their best in that set up.

I agree Son is more effective from the left and 100% about Kane, but Son’s stats will not look dramatically different if he was playing from the left, it’s always been the case I have just been too lazy to gather it for myself and never seen them in cold hard numbers before but that’s the story of his career here, he will go on a 5 or 6 game spree and knock in 6-8 goal twice a season then perform like that the rest, end up close to 20 goals and be hailed as the best thing since sliced bread and our saviour.
