The case for the defence

Our defence is looking pretty shocking and I am trying to work out why we went from the best defence in the league a couple of seasons ago to this.

Right back, we clearly never replaced Walker a suspect defender but great pace. Walker-Peters is young but to me he looks like a back up right back not first choice. Aurier does not even know how to take throw ins and lunges into tackles.

Conclusion we need a new fast right back.............I like Henrichs the German chap at Monaco, gettable as well.

Central Defence, Seems clear Toby is off in the summer and just as well because his pace slowing is such a glaring weakness, Verts seems to be on the naughty boys list despite being better physically he should be good for 2 years but looks like he wont sign a contract.

Sanchez has had some ok games but looks far from commanding and actually reminds of me the sort of big units that Everton always had in defence like Ashley Williams, not a bad player but does not read the game well enough. Foyth might be able to pass the ball a bit, but he spends his time ball watching and making rash challenges.

Conclusion we have two ageing centre halves and two who are not ready and might possibly never be, I like Tah from Germany I think at 26 he is the right age to come in and offer leadership and pace and can play the ball out from the back. It is clear to me we need to first choice centre backs and then hope that Sanchez and Foyth come through. Do not know who else would fit the profile we want/need and we could afford.

Left back, Rose does not want to be here, he wants one last big contract which we wont give him as he costs us to many goals when he switches off defensively. Davies is not anywhere near good enough but handy to have as back up being able to play central defence as well. I do not see Sessegnon as a left back but admit I could be wrong on this.

Conclusion, we need a new top class left back to replace Rose, I would look again to Germany(dont know why but that seems to be where i am looking) Phillip Max is 25 very fast and good crossing and is also pretty good defensively. An outside target for a left back role could be Ricco Henry at Brentford a player who has played for England at youth levels and I rate highly, though perhaps not ready for us just yet.

A new right back 25m, top class centre back 50m, left back 40m. I just cant see us paying that and think that the defence will be a bit of patch job for the next few seasons, unless we get lucky and have someone come through the youth system that will really make their mark.

I am aware that defence can also start with midfield cover which is why I hope Watford are in the relegation zone in January and we can try and get Doucoure on the cheap to cover our defenders a bit better or even another argie in Palacios though I imagine he would be expensive.

What do you guys think about our defence is it as a bad as I think or are you more optimistic.

Rose and Sanchez shouldn’t be anywhere near the team at the moment.

They have been terrible in all three games.

Personally think the pace thing with Alderweireld is not the concern, it's the system and protection in front of the back 4 which is all over the place at the moment. Toby and Jan are our best pairing and still will be in 2 years time, if they stick around. If they don't sign extensions then they'll still be our best 2 centre backs for this season. Then we can look for at least one replacement next summer. Agree with what has been said about Sanchez and Foyth, good players but prone to lapses of concentration and positionally still need to learn a lot hopefully they will. Totally agree on your full backs assessment but can't say about the potential replacements as I've not seen them.

My biggest issue with our defense is the coaching.
There’s now way in hell that out defensive coaching is adding value, when we watch such poor positioning from Sanchez and KWP not being covered when he attacks - in defense of Toby, he has to close down the ball, but Sanchez exposes the Centre - it’s a no-win situation when Verts can be left warming the bench!!
Pochettino needs to reveal his plan...

I want to know why we paid as much as we did for Davinson Sanchez. He’s certainly not proving his worth so far. Poor in the air. Clings around his man too much. Seems to struggle to read the game and Pochettino appeared to pull him back earlier when maybe otherwise Sanchez might have got in to an altercation.

Alderweireld isn’t as commanding a centre back as he once was. Now I’m more impressed by his long passing than any defensive work.

Rose doesn’t want to be at the club so is he really playing with his true level?

Kyle Walker-Peters is ok but really only backup. I’d rather have Trippier as at least he added width in possession. Even if Trippier was poor defensively.

And then there’s Vertonghen. Clearly something has happened with him. Who knows what? But for him to be left out. Then benched.

Then we have no real defensive midfielder shielding them. I appreciated Sissoko last season for his hard work but too often now think playing with him in the side is like having ten men. Winks is ok but not really a defensive midfielder, at his best he is a catalyst. At Wink’s worst he is a Vinny Samways.

I really hope Ndombele can help but not convinced that he’s that style of player.

Watching the game today and the Villa game what amazes me is how much space their players got on the counter, shape is all wrong from our perspective.
That is why I would have Dier in the side, when the full backs push up he can just sit in the middle to protect our centre backs whilst restricting the space for the likes of Wesley and Joelinton to move into to get a counter attack going.

And to add I would have Dier in the team as the main holding midfielder. Not the best player in the world but knows his job and is the best option we have at the club.

Dier is actually our best defensive midfielder coz he is also a central defender. Let’s get him fit and playing...
Winks is a risk without enough guile and physicality to be a proper defensive midfielder. I’d like to see him develop more further upfield and then maybe back to holding - he needs experience, to stop exposing our central defence

Sissoko seems to be unsure of his role in the midfield. He is all over the place and getting nothing done! Pochettino previously praised Sissoko’s ability in transition, but it hasn’t happened in his past three games

Playing high with Toby leaves a lot of space for Sanchez to cover when the fb’s have advanced.

And Sanchez isn’t exactly the most reliable last line of defense.
I also wonder, how the hell can Hugo be captain when he has no influence on the game.... :ggrrrr:
