Giovani Lo Celso

I thought that Fekir was supposed to be the next big thing and was going to one of the big boys? What happened?

Yep, only one year left on his contract and the injury shadow seems to have dissuaded bigger clubs from chancing it.

Seemed insane to think this would be the case at the end of season. What with us "not spending" and Eriksen having his head turned etc. Would have to be one in and one out scenario.

But now, it actually makes more sense. Eriksen doesn't appear to be as in demand as perhaps he (or us) had imagined. And if there was one player who needed his place threatened by competition to get best out of him, it was Eriksen's.

Agreed, competition for Eriksen has been something we have lacked pretty much since he signed, perhaps after we sold Siggy?

So we're saying this guy is definitively an AM rather than deeper? Leaves us a little short in CM if Winks has the same injury problems he's had the last two seasons.

Some would say there was ‘absolutely no chance’ of such an outcome and those suggesting so are ‘deluded’.
Give it a rest Ajax mate. Do you believe everything you read? I still stand by my comments that Eriksen and Lo Celso will not play in the same side - unless its a friendly before the transfer window shuts. I will hold my hands up if Eriksen stays and we sign Lo Celso, but I dont think I will have to.

Winks, Ndombele, Dier, Sissoko, Skipp and Wanyama is our current pool of CM’s. Wouldn’t describe it as being left short in that position personally. By the sounds of it Ndombele isn’t too dissimilar to Winks in style of play, in terms of being a passer of the ball not a destroyer. So you, in theory, could always have a ball player/defensive player combo in there.

Winks played about 40 games last season I believe, not too shabby. He was also rushed back early a couple of times and no opportunity to rest him, which would have had a knock on effect down the line as well with performances and subsequent knocks.

Where’s that fish and hook emoji hahahahahah

Only joking, no more now :D

By all accounts he's both, with a slight preference for #10. So competition/cover for both Eriksen and Winks.

In effect its likely that Ndombele and Lo Celso will be picking up the minutes of Dembele, Wanyama and Llorente from the squad of the last 2 seasons, plus relieving pressure on overplayed players like Alli, Eriksen and Dier.

Eriksen has played a deeper lying role on many occasions, either starting there or switching there tactically during the 90.

What we're gathering are a group of midfielders that can play in certain roles depending on opponents and game management.

I never feel Eriksen or Alli excel in CM, though both are capable there. I will be interested to see if Lo Celso is genuinely versatile enough to be as good in both in positions.

Agree. And I probably should've mentioned that in my OP. Whilst Eriksen and Alli can play there, for me it doesn't mean they should!

I think our lack of CMs last season, with Dembele leaving and Wanyama/Dier/Winks all being injured for sustained periods, is the most likely cause of our season falling flat at times.
I've lost count of the times I've defended Dele to other fans who think he's had a brick season or is overrated. He was asked to do a job he's just not as good at! No doubt he'll benefit for it in the long run.

But whilst they may not excel at CM, at least we know we have players that can cover that role if times get totally desperate.

We arguably have the following to cover anything from 2-4 midfield positions depending on 4-2-3-1 or diamond:

Winks
Sissoko
Dier
N'Dombele
Skipp
Wanyama
Dele
Eriksen
Lo Celso tbc.

That seems plenty of cover to me. brick your could even possibly throw Lamela or Moura in there on tip of diamond.
