Ben Davies

At his best, Danny rose is one of the best full backs in the league IMO. Davies, not even close. He lacks any pace and cannot compete against really athletic opponents. That said he does know how to defend, unlike Trippier.

Spot on.

Disregarding left or right sided, I'd rank our FB's / makeshift FBs as follows:

Rose
Vertonghen (deputising when he has to)
Davies
Tripps
Aurier
KwP (would be better if given a more solid run IMO)
Foyth (better defender than some of those above him, but not as FB)
Dier (should never be played as FB again)

To an extent, I agree.

It's taken me a long time to realise that Rose is a better option than Davies. Sure, Davies is a tidy defender (and I like my FBs to actually defend!) and I think keeps the shape better while being more than capable of delivering a decent cross or through-ball.

However, Rose gives us impact. Makes the opposition worry and stand back. Helps us break the press. Gives us that little bit of chaos while still being a passable defender.

I still like Davies too, and am always surprised at how young he is, but he's just not as impactful.

You have always said that

What is it that makes him better in your opinion?

I just believe he is a better player, Rose is dynamic the way he throws himself around but goes to floor on many occasions. One of the first things i learnt at the academy was the saying " stay on your feet" of couse that is not always possible but Rose hits the deck more often then not ( which generally puts players out of the game for seconds and as i say he does it often).

Davies is a better reader of the game and generally can put tackles in without going to ground. he is better in the air and his attacking play ( although not as dynamic) usually ends with a better cross. I do not know off hand what the assists for the two of them but i suspect Davies has better ones.

As i said earlier its all about opinons but i really would pick Davies over Rose as i believe he is a better player, he does not get noticed as much because he does not play like a " bull in a china shop" as Rose does on several occasions.

I believe that Davies was carrying a hip injury for most of last season which may have curtailed some of his attacking intent, however as a pure defender last season he was still top drawer. I think he is a respected member of the squad (I believe he is the only team member who regularly reads books rather than listens to music on the coach) and I suspect he will go into management at the end of his playing days. I am quite happy to tie him down long term as he is reliable and can cover centreback if needs be too which is an added bonus!

Dier is a big academic type too

And I agree he may have been carrying that injury for some time. Trippier has one too but that’s ignored as he played on all season like Davies did

Rose hasn’t been at that level for ages.

If we are to keep one Davies is the better option

Can cover CB well, less injury prone as well

Don’t disagree with giving him a new contract (5 years seems a bit much though) but really don’t understand why we’re not doing the same with Rose who to me is clearly the better left back. Davies is a nice, steady player but we’re not going to win the league with him and Trippier at full back.

Rose is 29 whilst Davies is 26....

Also, Rose is a depressed guy with a series of long term injuries in recent years who publicly stated he wanted to leave the club. Davies doesn’t seem to have issues with his mental state of mind, hadn’t had too many injuries (I know he just had a hernia) and hasn’t done interviews wanting to leave.

Good reason to offer Rose a new contract too imo, see if we can help him through it.

Have no problem with Davies and wouldn’t want to lose him I just don’t think he’s good enough to be starting the majority of games if we have ambitions to win the league.

If we had Rose and still had Kyle Walker at their best this season we would have been close imo. Full backs are so important to your team. You have two brick full backs and you're bound to let in goals and not score as many. I'd sign two from either ajax or Dortmund who bossed us this season and we'd be sorted.
