Harry Winks

Fortunately he will be fully rested for next season

Exactly, big season for Winks coming up

- Highly likely he will have new competition for his spot (or a midfield spot in general)
- Needs to push on, be more consistent, control games a bit more and stay fit.

Wonder if Winks played a role in Kane being selected. We needed Winks to play given the lack of options in midfield and our complete lack of anyone else who plays like him. Winks also proved it was the right decision because he tinkled all over every other midfielder on the pitch.

Now imagine if Pochettino is contemplating leaving Kane on the bench. How does he sell that to Kane if he’s starting Winks?

Or maybe he just thought Kane was worth the risk.

Interesting to see where the rumoured arrivals of Ndombele and Lo Celso leave WInks. If they are straight replacements for Dembele and Eriksen, he will still be in the first 11 after the summer. In that case, next season might be the making of Winks as a real midfield superstar.

Dembele and Winks didn't start many games together did they?

Whatever happens in the summer Winks will be in the starting eleven enough to prove himself worthy of being a regular starter. I think he will do just that.

But he hadn't played a game since the first leg against Emirates Marketing Project!!!!????
Surely Wanyama/Llorente deserved to start!!

It's weird that the hate Kane from the public for being high profile filters its way into Spurs fans.

Haven't seen a single person hating on Kane. It's more based on the evidence that when he returns from injury Kane takes a while to get up to full speed. Also there were alternatives to playing Kane that were in some sort of form. The alternatives to playing WInks were Wanyama and Dier.

The alternatives to Kane were not on form / and were not suited to the game that it ended up being.

IF Arnold and Robertson were flying forward, i would agree we could have used Pace to push them back and take control of the game
As it was we had control of the game, therefore it was suited more to Kane, we had chances, suggest you look on Michael Coxs analysis which is the closest to analysis, rather than narrative ive seen

Well he has excelled in every big European game ... worryingly so did wheelchair according to some

I don't know how to use the like button.

...England were beaten in Thursday’s Nations League semi-final by the Netherlands and, although the focus was drawn to sloppy errors at the back, their midfield struggled to impose themselves on talented opposition. The Dutch display, in contrast, had been conducted by Frenkie de Jong at its core. The Ajax player, who will join Barcelona next month for £75m, was tidy in possession and busy in his movement, dictating the play in a similar manner to Luka Modric in last year’s defeat to Croatia in the last four of the World Cup.

The hope is that Winks, who has only three appearances and 250 minutes at this level, will fulfil a similar role in the next stage of England’s development. “He is a player that we have very much been waiting for in that kind of position,” said the assistant manager, Steve Holland. “Someone who is comfortable to turn and connect the play when we are working through the offensive phases. Quite simply, had he been fit and consistently playing for Tottenham, he would have been in the squad 100%. It is just a call we had to make. I am sure he will acquire many England caps in the future.”...

Well, he either thinks Winks is that type of controlling player or that Winks is the only hope of such a player for England.

By telling Kane that he’s on the bench. If Kane is a real team player then he will accept the team’s interests to be above itself his own. Plus he would have to respect Pochettino’s wishes. When a manager makes decisions purely to keep players happy, rather than believing the decision to be the correct one, then the manager is losing control of the team.

It's easy to say that but you're talking about our best and most influential player who will, without doubt, think he should be in the team for the biggest game our club has ever played. Whatever chance you have of selling it to him on the basis he was out for two months, that disappears when you're playing a midfielder who is in the same boat. In that situation, it would be easy for a manager to convince himself that playing Kane was the right thing to do.

Or Poch may always have genuinely believed that playing Kane was the right thing to do.

Kane would have committed multiple murders to play that game. We have never, *ever* been there, in our 137-year history - Kane has been a fan for 25 of those years.

No way on Earth he wasn't playing - I reconciled myself to that the minute we got there. I even think he would have played with fifteen injections, a plaster cast and a Zimmer frame, if he had to.

It would have been a bigger disaster to leave him on the bench, since that might have massively damaged both his morale, and the team's (because, as Danny explained, he inspires them more than we can perceive on the outside).

I actually think starting him proved detrimental to our play and to his own ankle situation, but the reality is, in Kane's case, there was no way it was ever going to end differently.

However, going forward, I agree with you - need to be firmer in that regard.

Yes, we’d never been there in our history isn’t that enough reason to want to give ourselves the best chance by playing our best, fit, team rather than catering to the whims of players. What now if we get to a Final and Lloris isn’t fit, do we select him as we shouldn’t let him down?

Always pick the team that provides best chance to win. If Kane is a team player, then he would rather we were successful and he was rested, than for him to play simply because he’s our highest profile player.

I think Kane was selected as he was the most likely to score a chance as he is our best finisher. I think the hope was that if it was a game of few chances then Kane could take one of those and be the difference maker.

Of course, pochettino also could see how Kane was in training so perhaps he felt that Kane was ready anyway.

Even if you forget the club, forget the players, forget the fans - this was the biggest game of Poch’s career.
Do people honestly think he would pick players that he knew weren’t up to the task out of some sentimental sense of loyalty? And risk losing the biggest game of his career just to placate some egos?
I don’t buy it. I think your last line sums it up. If Poch is happy with what he sees in training (along with feedback from our medical team), then he picks his starting 11 on that basis, imo.

Anyways...Winksy. He has been very unfortunate this season and last with injuries and yet has still managed to make himself a player that we now miss hugely when he can’t play. Let’s hope he comes back fighting fit and stays injury free for next season.

.

The last 2 paragraphs sum it up for me.

Poch had to pick the team he felt would give him the best chance of victory. If he left Kane out and we lost, I think he would have been wondering 'what if' for a very long time. By playing him and losing, he wont dwell on it for nearly as long imo.

Then as you mention there's the training aspect. Kane looked good against Switzerland, linked it up well, and looked pretty sharp. He probably looked the same in the build up to the CL final.

The bottom line is the shape of the game (with the early goal) meant Liv could bank right in on Kane and leave no space whatsoever. He could have gone into the game off a great end to the season and still not got any more joy, purely for how it played out tactically.
