The glorious march to CL qualification

Just thankful that UEFA changed the rule permitting 5 teams from same nation in CL, as I’m nervous enough about final even without having to worry about a repeat of 2012 should the Goons beat the Chavs!

Would have tried harder for 3rd if that were still the case, though. The fact that we're in no matter what probably meant we cooled the jets today.

Completely agree.

The Champions League final is the biggest game in world club football. It is an amazing achievement for us to get there. I never thought I'd see it.

Remember when we used to struggle domestically after playing in Europe? Not this year. We've gone as far as we can in Europe and qualified for next year's competition through the league.

All this and no pre-season, rotten luck with injuries and playing most of the season away from home.

Happy clapper

It's been a hell of a season. Doesn't matter how, we reached our objective to be back in the elite club competition in our new ground despite all of our troubles (no signings, stadium, world cup/preseason, injuries).

Poch is spot on to be talking about having a plan moving forward. If we want to compete for the title, if that's his goal set by the board, then its time to revisit how we get there over the next 5 years.

Oh... and THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL. Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have the chance to become the champions of Europe. What a time to be alive.

I completely agree that this season has been a grind.

Certainly feels like a loooong time ago that we spanked Everton 6-2 followed by Bournemouth 5-0 to go second in the League.

What with all the uncertainty about how many more games we had to play at tourist-trap Wembley and the injury pileup, the last few months have been almost as bad as when Redknapp was failing to mind the gap.

At least we don’t have to worry about Chelsea’s European final result this time around and with any luck we’ll be the ones upsetting the odds in CL final!

We were running strong at half way, then hit the wall... with 5 miles to go we got blisters, with 2 miles to go we got cramp and started walking, with 100 yards to go we fell over and had to be helped to our feet by a giant penguin... we crawled the last 5 feet with beige fluid running down the back of our legs... but we got there in the end

Here are the last 10 years of points and placings, in chart format, for the top 6:

Now that we have qualified, I was looking at seedings for next year. This place I think is one of the best:

https://www.footballseeding.com/european-cups/champions-league-seeding-19-20/

So assume Liverpool win the CL (if we win it then we're pot 1) and Arsenal win the EL, then you'd have Bayern or Dortmund, Chelsea, Napoli, Shakhtar and ourselves going in to pot 2....but we'd be the lowest ranked of them.

We therefore need Sevilla and Roma (both currently 6th but very tight with 1-2 games to go) to both finish outside the top 4 this year in order that we stay in pot 2 (they're both above us in the rankings). Chelsea winning the EL would obviously give us more breathing space....and would also prevent Arsenal not just getting CL football next year, but also an easy draw as a top seed

(I think...)

Need to look at hte bigger picture:

- 4th place
- 4th consecutive CL qualification
- CL final, possibly winners
- no signings for two transfer windows
- An incredible stadium finished which massively increases the revenue which we'll make
- opponents which have massively outspent us for years and years

I think thats a pretty top season, even if it did finish (league-wise) with a whimper

European cup final in 3 weeks, the most important prize we can play for and furthest we’ve ever gone in the competition, along with securing top 4 ahead of our north London rivals, with an injury list no other club in the league experienced.

Tough crowd doesn’t cover it!

Could not agree more with both posts.

To be honest it has not been the best season for performances too many injurys, players knackered because of a short pre-season, players who have not hit their bests on a regular basis.

However the season has given me some of the biggest highs i have had as a supporter. Coming away from the City game having won the tie, the night in Ajax was one of the best ( if not THE best), the opening of the best stadium i have been to, and the joy that i have had as a supporter by being at these events.

Agree.

And the best is yet to come:D

Just under six years ago, this was the big news we were facing.
And where are we now...? Damn!

Tottenham will face Anzhi Makhachkala, FC Sheriff and Tromso in the group stages of this season's Europa League. Tottenham, quarter-finalists last season, must venture east to Moldova for a meeting with Sheriff Tiraspol and to the Arctic Circle outpost of Tromso in Norway.

This season has been full of ups and downs, but the team has far exceeded my expectations, after the world cup with so many players going to the semi final stages and lacking a full preseason and Son missing in the Asian Cup getting a settled side was a struggle, that with runs in all cup competitions and injuries the team has been pushed to their physical and mental limits. Before a ball was kicked I would have been pleased with 6th in league and maybe a domestic cup. To reach the CL final was beyond my wildest dreams. Given the season City and Liverpool have had it's unreasonable to have expected much more in terms of league position and despite the downs I feel proud of all the team and coaching staff.

With Arsenal continuing the march to becoming the old Spurs and Hazard off - top 4 this season feels more important than previous years

A real chance to kick on

Agreed. For years, right up until Poch, I still begrudged not finishing above Arsenal to get Champions League in lasagna season because the Goons has just built a new stadium and overtaking then would have caused them a great financial headache. Now the boots on the other foot achieving Champions League at the expense of them both again can not be underestimated.

Added to that, Kronke seems a decent fella. Happy to spend £100m on a front line and a grotesque amount on wages (but clearly not enough for goons who seem to want them to spend City levels of money to claw back 4th) but unlikely to invest much further. Also unlikely to sell.

Mean whilst the dodgy Russian might get fed up now he can’t enter the UK and Chelsea do seem to have lost a lot of clot in the modern era.

And Oke has done a decent job at United but has shown early signs he (as many would have first envisioned) is not cut out for top level management. If this carries on, it will be interesting then see if a slump goes on for a more prolonged tone than under Jose due to his cult status.

Either way - those behind us look fragile. Hopefully Levy will put us in a position to be strong and strengthen this new found CL strangle hold we have whilst striving to bridge the gap between us and the top 2.
