Luke Amos

I'm not going to argue with you, you are a lot more perceptive than me if you can form an opinion on one senior appearance.

You make my point for me. He's done nothing in senior games for Spurs despite now being 22. Could make the same point about any other youngster who hasn't played for the first team, but if you're 22 and played one game (I know...injuries), it tells a story and feels too late...and the likes of Skipp and TOB have 3-4 years of development time on their side vs Amos which it light-years at that age. As above, would be great if he does succeed at Spurs but would surprise me and more likely to be a championship/league 1 player

That is a different point to the one I responded too. I guess that we will find out soon enough but I think that he'll get a chance as he was making good progress before the injury.

Not sure it is, but either way, if we strengthen the squad in the summer he could find 4-5 senior CMs ahead of him and then competing with Skipp, TOB for pre-season minutes. Thats a tough ask. Its reflective of where we now are and how much we've progressed...I remember a game where we went to Old Trafford with Neale Fenn and Rory Allen up top. Difficult for youngsters to break though nowadays

I was very impressed with him during the pre-season tour in Norfa Merica. He showed a lot of confidence in how he moved the ball and himself, creating some nice build up play.
Given the strategy for the squad this season (no additions), I think he was tabbed by Poch for a steady role with the club and perceived the same way Winks and now Skipp are. I was really sad to learn of his injury.

Sure, some say pre-season doesn't mean much, but Spurs have played some quality opponents in recent summers and for the first hour or so, there's plenty of good players out there. Last time I was as impressed in a pre-season performance, it was a strong, energetic showing for Ryan Mason in Toronto. Hardly noticed the lanky blonde-haired kid wearing #37 for Spurs. Can't miss him now, in the #10 shirt.

And if we bring in players who will get straight into the team this summer ( which looks like it could happen) then its going to get harder, only the best will have a chance and i would expect that is what will happen.

We have progressed as a team since the likes of Mason, Bentelab and others made the break through, its only going to get harder if we do go out and buy starters.

I think he will be allowed to leave if we get the players we want in. I'm of a similar opinion that the injury cost him his shot at playing for us and he's now behind Skipp who has time on his side. Amos was still quite raw last pre-season and will still be at the same stage this summer. He would have to do an awful lot to not end up sold.

Something that occurred to me is that we might be open to loaning Skipp out if we think he needs first team football for his development. In those circumstances, Amos staying to fill his squad place might be more likely.

I agree, though I dont see that a lot of our signings, post the re-fresh this summer, are going to be coming in as first choice players. I'd expect beyond this year a typical summer to be signing, for example, a Moura and a Foyth - so one who might be in/around the first choice 18 and another one who is for the future.

Even then though, I think it'll be tough for players to break-through. Look at KWP - even despite both our senior RBs being a bit dodgy this season, he hasnt had many chances. Say we had a young left-back, would they have had many opportunities ahead of Rose and Davies? And at the moment in CM we have Amos, Skipp, TOB, Marsh...I'd have thought that at least 2 of those need to go out on loan in August

I think he's missed the boat, this was the season he should have been getting game time but through injury and bad luck I believe his chance has gone. The bar has been raised this season and if we are to stay as a serial CL team we need players who can come in at that level, 1 or 2 outstanding young players will possibly get a chance in cup games but that progress will be tough for them.

I think that realistically we're talking about 5/6 choice central midfielders. Those are likely to be youth players. I agree with @AdamB that we are only likely to have 2 of the 4 he listed at Spurs next season with the others released, sold or loaned out. The question is which stay.

You think this based on what? Proper, serious question.

If we are serious about backing Poch then there will be more players in front of Amos than just Sissoko and WInks. In that instance I think it would be best to let him leave instead of keeping him around the first team where his minutes will be severely restricted. It's like the KWP situation, where the lad would've been better off going somewhere else to get some real football under his belt.

Well then thank goodness Poch is in charge of which young players stay to learn at the club rather than you. By that same logic Winks could have been shoved off to Swansea or Brum or somewhere 4 or 5 years ago when he wasn't getting first team minutes.

We're, as a club, in a different place to 4-5 years ago. And personally I think Winks showed more at that age that any young midfielder which we currently have has done

Are we the same team that were then? Are we aiming to just be in with a shot of top 4? Even Poch has said that the level a youth team player now has to be an 8/10 to have a chance of breaking through, when before a 6/10 would've got it.

We are in a different time and place. Winks is a year older than Amos yet has 2.5 seasons experience in the premier league and came through at a time when we weren't looking to transition into a league challenging side.

I thought he looked OK in the US where the football was less competitive and played at a slower pace than the walking football my Dad now plays. In our final pre-season friendly against a Girona team playing somewhere near a normal level of intensity he looked nowhere near good enough. IMO there is nobody in our under 23 team who is currently anywhere good enough to be in the 25 man squad if we want to be competing to win the premier league. We have some slightly younger players who are promising but those from the older age groups now need good loan moves.

There was some decent play once the first halves got rolling last summer and he was well involved. Our opinions aside, he looked to be in Poch's planned squad for the start of the season, particularly with Poch knowing we weren't likely signing someone. Not unlike how Ohnama was brought on board in the hope that he'd improve being around the first team and nick a few appearances in cup games.

In friendly games against big clubs the young players will often look good because they are putting it all in, whereas the established players are just having a kick about and simply trying to avoid injury. The Girona game was a decent benchmark for me as that Girona team looked like they were actually trying and our young players looked absolutely terrible in that scenario. Poch may have been making do with Amos last season because we didn't sign anyone. However when you look at this season and see that we have had to overplay certain players (Sissoko) and play others before they were properly fit (Wanyama, Winks and Dier) you realise that you might be faced with having to play one of these young players in a big game. We saw Poch preferring to put Rose in central midfield than play Skipp, which I think tells us a lot and Skipp is probably further ahead in his development than Amos. Neither are yet anywhere near good enough to be in our match day squad though. If we go into next season having to rely on players such as these to play a part then I don't think we will be winning competitions.
