Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Nobody is questioning that Poch had funds to spend - the question is how much? He was quite clearly satisfied with the squad he had, in comparison to what he could buy. But all that says is that he didn’t have the funds to purchase the players that would really elevate the squad - sounds more likely he’s saying he needs more funds than what Levy has previously given him. I’m sure it’s a big ask to get Levy to do that, which might be why he’s consistently making hints about leaving to put him under a bit of pressure perhaps....

That's not what I took from Hoddle's comments on Wednesday

We have no idea

Exactly! This is becoming so boring and predictable. Just when the media's Spurs-y tag has been blown too smithereens, they latch onto the other stereotypes.. tight fisted Levy holding back Poch from his full potential.

I am not saying Levy has not screwed up at times - losing Grealish for a few mill was so typical of his mindset, although we are talking about an unknown quantity and his impact is unquantifiable. However to look from the outside without any knowledge of what goes on between him and Poch behind closed doors and make assumptions is just ridiculous.

You're making wild assumptions here though.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/48235092 Well that clears up all the garbage on he meant this or he meant that. Cheap out leavy and I'm off, clear as crystal. Throw me a few 30 million Gomes's and think that'll do. You manage the team baldy. I can fudge off to a warmer climate for more money, instead of covering your ass.

Some of you bang on about being ahead of schedule bla bla bla, you'll be still saying that in 10 years, think about the stadium costs. Pooch don't care. Like me and some of us nutters who think if Levy/Joe can't afford to invest in they should sell or bring in another investor, failing to do so just increases their share value so why would they? I don't believe they will nor does pooch.

A shame this has been dragged up at this stage, but pooch again knows how THFC inc will react and is setting up departure.

That really sounds like the attitude of a man who only a couple of days ago spoke of how he turned down Real Madrid out of loyalty to the club, Levy and his contract.

Perhaps not necessarily.

Surely the fee for de Jong would have been astronomical?

The player chose not to come after long consideration. I don’t think that was just about money. He’s ended up signing for Barcelona.

Was about 75m euros so over £60m. Fees are often negotiated after agreeing terms(which we didn’t even end up doing with the player anyway) so no guarantees we would have been prepared to pay that - Levy might of tried for a lower price(unlike him of course). Of course it’s all guess work none of us knows, but I certainly don’t see suggesting Poch wants more cash than Levy has previously made available as an outrageous one. Otherwise if say 100m plus had been made available previously I’d be rather concerned that he couldn’t find better with that money. Can’t just use the we couldn’t get rid of anyone excuse as we quite clearly tried to get Grealish in for a certain amount so we would have been prepared to release someone. Would also explain why Poch is dropping these little hints about leaving, end of chapters etc etc to force Levy’s hand. But yes, all guesswork...

I could not agree more, mate - with you 400% on that.

Reading through that, I also wanted to highlight this little bit, because it's pretty poignant -

"And for Tottenham is only playing in the final for the first time. All we create in this five years, because we know the reality. You know when we arrived here no one believed to reduce the gap to the top four. We were scared to play QPR because the manager was Harry Redknapp. ‘Oh Harry is coming, he knows us. He knows the players and White Hart lane. That was the feeling of the club. Oh we lose three derbies against West Ham. Ohhhh the first game we are going to play West Ham’.

"We are Tottenham. We are Tottenham. Always I was in my mind, Tottenham big club, why don’t you believe inside?"

I've said this for a while, but Poch isn't just fighting our circumstances. He's fighting our very nature, our being, the ethos behind our existence. We didn't believe inside, and maybe we still don't.

We're all scared to believe, whether we like it or not, because we've been burned so many times by believing that we prefer numbness to more pain. We might not admit it, but that's what we have been, for a very long time - fans, players, and the club itself.

I can't describe in words how amazed I am that this man gets that - what we are, heart and soul.

And I can't describe how in love I am with him for refusing to accept it - for fighting, with every ounce of his being, to get us to believe, and to change our very nature.

He's on the cusp of succeeding. For the first time, people aren't scared to believe anymore.

But all of it will be for naught if Poch leaves. If Poch leaves, we are fudging done, because we will not have another manager who understands our nature *and* has the bravery to tackle it head on. Not for another fifty years.

He must be backed. He must, must, *must* be given whatever he wants, whenever he wants it. This man must be made to stay - whatever the cost.

Time for sofas - no more chairs.
I think even last year Poch stated we needed a new plan, a new chapter. We all know we (Inc Levy)can't sustain the levels we currently do. It just looks too exhausting for everyone.

Last year he may have just sucked it up and let it roll round that one last time due to the uncertainties with the stadium. He has sympathy with Levy and realises in a different way this is a man, a colleague who is giving his all in his life's work.

BUT Poch wants his turn and he realises to really go at it, consistently, he needs more. The infrastructure is in place, that has finished. 5 years Poch saw us thru this phase, giving us plenty to be proud off, beyond we ever thought possible.

Poch knows the taps are turning on. It is not a time to be cautious. This is a man that is literally telling you thru his work...he can be our Fergie. He is a lovely human being too. Levy is not stupid he must know this. He knows Poch would never ask for too much either. Give him everything he does ask for though....he deserves it.

Glenn Hoddle claimed Levy was ready to buy players in the last two windows but Poch declined, instead taking chances on Toby, Rose and Dembele. Levy is willing. Poch needs to make up his mind as much as any one else as far as I'm concerned.

Is he happy with his squad or not? He's consistently claimed he is. Poch needs to man up and make the hard calls to let players go and bring in the right replacements. It's not all on Levy.

I love the guy, but he needs to play his part in leading from the front for this next chapter.

People are fixated on the money, I don't think it money at all. Its belief, bravery, the mentality to win that's the tools he's talking about imo.
That squad is over the last 4 years has always collapsed in on itself.
It's time start believing in us, he's always saying it, no is the time to do it.
No more Mr Nice Spurs.

Did de Jong not go for £80m? Hardly astro money. Only £20m more than was reported for Grealish. And that I think is the nub, we won't 'take a punt' for a championship player when £20m e tra gets someone who will make a difference.

I think that what Poch meant last summer and now is that the squad needs freshening up and he wants to build his next side. That was frustrated by not being able to move players on last year.

Poch has made it clear that he doesn't want a large squad and we cannot afford to have players on the payroll who aren't in the manager's plans.

I know some have tried to claim that we are asking too much for surplus players, but without much evidence to support this, but we know that we had accepted offers from Italy for Dembele last summer but he wanted to go to China and that there was little interest in other players that we wanted to move on.

Let's hope that we have more success this year.

I literally 'know' that was the plan last year, sell to buy as I have tried to explain in many posts this season. (To the get your cheque book out crowd)

That was also largely about the being 'brave' comments last season. ie selling players you'd think we'd be stupid to. Rose Toby Moose etc and rebuilding to something better with the funds. I think Poch has said some players told him they didn't want to be here next (this) season.

Poch (and the team) have dug so deep again this year.

I think Poch is not necessarily a spender BUT when he has a plan in HIS head he requires others to buy into it, that includes players and the club (ie Levy). If players last year told him they wanted to leave, he'd want them to go, and as long as Levy isn't the hurdle for them not going (asking too much) , Poch will be ok with that. Poch will be annoyed that he has to reintegrate and get those players 100% pulling in the right direction though,as he will see that as a uneccesary use of energy.

I think hes just checking the club are being honest with him, I mean there are quite a few that think that Levy is just tight fisted and is looking to cream things in for himself, but the taps are turning on and Poch wants a bit to flow his way. As I say he's never gonna blow anything for the sake of it, he just needs more flexibility in the transfer account. ie 'ill give you £100m net....you don't have to sell before, you can buy who you want, sell who you want, when you want, that kitty is yours, no need to discuss it further' ..Levy could say that and Poch can nod and work his magic on all the other stuff the team requires...without needing to worry about Daniel.

Some very good comments in here guys.

He probably also has one eye on Toby, Eriksen, Rose etc who will be playing in the CL final yet we say we cannot afford to pay them what they want.

Hopefully this actually motivates the players to perform, knowing there could be a “new project” on the other side.

Anyone else spot the hand gesture he gave the reporter who asked the HK question at the end of the press conference!!!! :D

Well, last year he said we should be brave and we were. Not buying anyone in the summer transfer is so brave no one has tried it before. Now he wants a plan and transparency.

I think the pressure is, if we lose Toby and Eriksen, then we need a rethink. We are refreshing, starting with a fresh approach, that will see us move forward. If Eriksen and Toby are not off, then we don't need such a big plan. Just one or two quality first teamers and some youth prospects. But that may put forward challanges with fiances, and maybe Poch is commenting on that. He wants transparancy that we don't have much cash for the next 2 seasons but then it will double.

I see Poch's pressure on Levy as positive. He is ambitious. Levy is ambitious. They should drive each other. Push the boundries, and go all out. Spending lots of money is risk, but it can also pay massive dividends. We skimped on a number of players - Mane, Suarez - who would have taken us to a new level and been even more valuable assets.

I normally like a lot of your posts mate ( honestly) but ( imo) i think you are jumping to conclusions without any real proof in this instance. I think he wants another plan of course he does, he has mentioned on many occasions the " 5 year plan" he came here under and now he is wanting to know what he next " 5 year plan" entails.

And i see no hint of being unhappy or demanding anything in any of the interviews he has given over the last few weeks.
