Toby Alderweireld

30 is no age for a CB

I think that was true some years ago, in the EPL now 28 is the high norm. David Luiz is 32 this month and he is the top of the oldies bracket. Kompany at 33 will coach soon ie retire IMO.
Jan is 32 this year but still the best :) IMO. Otamendi doesn't play regularly at 31 now.

Toby 30 is older than Smalling and Jones which surprised me.

With any club he goes to only having to stump up £25m....it will help his wage negotiation. I wonder if we could match that amount. circa 200k a week?

If he goes to United, imo i wouldn't mind taking a chance on eric bailly, i think there is a player in there (lost in the circus of Man Yoo) . He was at Espanyol for a while so i wonder if Poch already has some knowledge on him.?

I still don't think £25m is that cheap for someone his age, with his recent injury record and with his La Liga black mark. It's a reasonable price, but not a break the bank on wages ones

La liga was a blip rather than black mark. Any employer would look at his performances for the last 5/6 years in the much more competitive PL and CL and completely ignore 1 average season 6/7 years ago.

And also he hardly had injury worries. He was out for a relatively short period and was then frozen out by Poch

Why would you call La Liga a black mark? At the time Athletico Madrid had the best defence in the Spain so there was no shame in being unable to oust 2 of the best defenders in the league

In your scenario. De Ligt Sanchez Toby Jan (Dier) ...just asking where would that leave Foyth.?
I'm not writing Foyth off. On the contrary, I think he is an exceptional talent. But you need to consider that Vertonghen and Alderweirld are in the twilight of their footballing careers, they have a couple of years left at the top level. A trio of Foyth, Sanchez and De Ligt looks to me to be a fantastic next generation of Spurs CBs, but as of today they are too young and inexperienced. And so for that reason I would keep the old guard around for another few years.

I think we probably will be outbid on De Ligt anyway as his stock is so high, but if there is a chance to sign him it is now or he is gone, probably for good.

Spot in - our succession planning needs to be better.

This would be a great start - I wouldn’t even be against loaning our Foyth for the season to get first team football to benefit us.

Toby has played 82% of minutes (3700) for us this season (all comps) more than anyone else in the squad. Eriksen is next on 74%. Last season Toby only played 35% (1741) so there has been a dramatic increase in playing time; bearing in mind he also played into the final weekend of the world cup I'd suggest any significant injury concerns are over. As Sanchez has mostly been available nearly all season Toby has not been playing purely through necessity.

Any buying club would be encouraged by a player's fitness based on these figures. Likewise if we are basing any contract negotiation on his ongoing fitness then the last 9 months make a difference.

Makes his exclusion last season even more baffling - maybe we should presume he was genuinely injured or at least that Poch was concerned for his injury/fitness?
