VAR: Sponsored by Chelsea

IMO, this is the sort of blatant mistake that VAR should be used to correct. From looking at one replay it's clear to everyone, even the most biased supporters of the team affected, that the decision was wrong. These types of errors are thankfully infrequent. My fear is that in the PL next season VAR will be used to scrutinise marginal incidents in a time consuming manner and result in final decisions that are still widely disputed.

I agree.
It will go through many revisions and tweaks over the coming years. It will though stop injustices like at Cardiff and that's a salient starting point.

Cardiff could conceivably be relegated by a single point this season.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that such a monied competition can be officiated at such an appalling level. Completely inexcusable.
Yes but it's much better than a delay in play, when the fans in the stadium don't know what's happening. Cardiff fans can now sleep happily knowing they won't have to suffer the dreaded VAR in the Championship.

Quod erat demonstrandum

So another attempt by FIFA bureaucrats to rig a match for a rich club, and another at least half a match completely overshadowed by feelings of injustice

Fletch on BT sport called the pen immediately.

Not because he thought it was a pen, but because the instruction given to smooth VAR was "any movement than makes the body bigger" counts as hand ball.

Roses arm went up = Pen. Even though it was a completely natural result of the action and never a pen.

The decision was "right", though of course the rules were wrong. This is somewhere I agree with Rusx

The argument for VAR was that it would overturn clear and obvious errors. It's not, or wasn't, supposed to be used for close judgement calls. Even if it is it should be when the referee is questioning his own call, not something instigated by the fourth official when even the opposition didn't appeal. The fourth official should only initiate action for incidents like the Fernandinho elbow.

More annoyingly, it does seem that the handball call was correct according the the UEFA guidelines, which seem to imply that only severing your arms can remove intent.

The only catch with the "rules" is, and its by my failing memory, that Im sure there is something to do with closeness as well.

IE - if the ball was kicked from really near a player that he didnt have time to move his hand/arm out of the way then its not a foul.

Which I would assume to apply here, its not like there was any real distance.

listening to the world football phonein yesterday and they and for countries that introduced it early, the MLS is good and mexico is a disaster... Brazil introduced it this year and is also crap.. i think most countries think its bad from what i hear on podcasts.

Verts: “It takes a lot away from the game." "So many things look like a penalty in slow motion." "Before it was quite physical, but now you are too scared to get close to someone.”

Poch: "I’m very worried about how it’s going to work next season”

'After a meeting in Glasgow last weekend [in March 2019], Ifab said that handball would be given if the player’s arms extended “beyond a natural silhouette”, even when accidental. David Elleray, the technical director of Ifab, said: “If the arms are extended beyond that silhouette, then the body is being made unnaturally bigger, with the purpose of it being a bigger barrier to the opponent or the ball.

“Players should be allowed to have their arms by their side because it’s their natural silhouette.”

The new interpretation will come into effect on June 1, the day of the Champions League final.'

I am genuinely gobsmacked that this is the best wording that the 'powers that be' have been able to come up with. Are you fudging kidding me? What the fudge is a 'natural silhouette' when playing football, especially when running / turning / twisting / sliding / jumping? It certainly isn't having 'their arms by their side.'

It is truly astounding, I am lost for words at their idiocy.

So the goal that was scored was a handball, and the pen which was not a pen was given as one. Glad to see VAR is bring fairness back to our game  What a complete FARCE.

A lot of these prats who make these stupid rules have probably never kicked a ball in anger. What a joke.

So we conceded a penalty due to VAR technicality but Dippers get away with this o_O

And this attempted leg breaker by Salah

The purpose of VAR (as well as paving the way for in-match advert breaks) is to allow bureaucrats to protect the interests of the richest clubs. The decisions always go in favour of the powerful. We would never have got the penalty if it had been the other way round last night.

There should be a rule that to be a professional referee, or to work for the FA or FIFA, you need to have at least 5 years playing experience at semi-pro or above level.

“No one expected it [City’s penalty] – they didn’t even appeal for it so it was extremely weird to concede a penalty like this. That’s VAR. In a way, it’s good. I’m not always a fan but at the end, everyone will benefit from it.

“I think it takes a lot away from the game. But like I said, at the end it will give you more. It can happen for us, as well. If we got a penalty in this way, I would be very happy.
