Anyone remember that Bale chap?

And a lot of that comes down to whether or not he represents what you think he does.

He has never quite hit the galactico level of reputation, has he? Never made himself much of a public figure. Never been seen as a leader of a team. So what is it?

Headlines "Spurs get 2 x CL winner and finalist scorer"

Followed by "Spurs records signing a flop having played 6 matches in 8 months!" "See Spurs entry in the top 10 most expensive flops EVER!!"

Mate, Bale is as close to the very top tier players as the UK has, the media will be kind to him ..

He shows up in big games, and in the PL (where physicality is more effective sometimes than technicality), he would make hay all day long .. The guy has scored 13 goals in something like 20 games in one of Madrid's worse seasons ever ..

The money Bale is on would preclude any deal. I don't imagine a transfer to united would be simple for the same reason. Marc Overmars the DoF at Ajax said Bales wages cover the entire Ajax team.

The only way Bale would return is if a sponsor part paid the wages (is that even allowed now) or if madrid did.

Think we all realize that, Bale is just speculation unless he himself wanted a complete change .. his wages are outrageous.

I dont doubt his ability on the field. I know he could be the game changer in that big game...

I also know, chances are most likely he wont actually be available for it!

But he will be collecting his £300k+ a week all the same.

I know he's as "big" a UK player as there is, but I also know if he doesnt go to Utd or City and comes to us instead the shine will wear off very quickly. The press wont be that kind at all. And sooner or later they will be revelling in our misfortune when he is out.

You like stats - his goalscoring is great, what about this?

16 starts out of 26 so far this season
2017/18 - 20 out of 38
2016/17 - 17 / 38
2015/16 - 21 / 38
2014/15 - 30 / 38
2013/14 - 24 / 38

In the last 6 seasons he has been available for 59% of games. The last 4 seasons 53%. 3 seasons 52%.

At 29, having been chronically injured virtually his entire career, do you think these numbers will improve?

Its all well and good speculating the difference he can make, but he needs to be available at that critical time - and right now thats a 50/50 chance.

At the expense of the deal, both financial and on the squad/good will - I just feel thats too much of a gamble.

No disagreement ..as you said, a gamble ..

Poch himself said it, we need a special player or two to make the next step.

Somebody could take a gamble on him and get a really good return (depending on how brick Madrid have managed his injuries), or not.

Likelihood, we are not in a position to make those kinds of gambles, but could see how it could be interesting.

On the financial side, weren't there whispers last summer that he quite fancied coming back to us and might be willing to compromise somewhat on wages to make it possible? Or am I living in dreamworld here...?!

Don't know why I'm going back to this .. but humour me @nayimfromthehalfwayline

- Assuming we somehow managed the financials (still unlikely, I get it)
- Assuming his fitness doesn't improve, and we get only 20 games a season out of him (based on your stats).

Spurs doesn't lose very many games a season, I find it hard to believe Bale couldn't make a difference to 5 games a season out of the 20, that could be 10 - 15 extra points in the PL or the difference between a domestic cup QF/SF and win.

He'd also allow us to rest Kane (could play Son/Bale up front) on occasion.

Would you still not take the gamble?

I do wonder how many of his injuries are related to, and maybe even just cover for, La Liga “preparation”.

If he was back at Spurs on “bread and water” I think things would be very different.

I'd take him on a pay-as-you play contract.

On our terms I’d love to see Bale back, squad relative, performance and appearance weighted wages for example.

Something doesn’t seem right with him though, he’s always professed loving being at Madrid even though the fans, the manager and his fellow pros have all seemed lukewarm on him. I thought it might have been the lifestyle but him not learning the lingo tells me either the £ (or €) is everything to him or his agent is a big influence on him.

We have to be mindful that if he does come in on top dollar the impact that would have on squad harmony, would hate to see anyone at the club top Kane’s wages for example.

Me too. Unfortunately there will be a couple of clubs who will give him 300k a week regardless and I just don’t see him effectively turning down millions or tens of millions to sign for us.

The gamble is that he is even fit for those games, and given his current appearance rate is 50% and declining Im not sure you can assume that will be the case.

And thats one of the biggest issues. Those 5 games need to fall when he is actually fit and able to play and play well. All evidence with him suggests the odds arent in your favour.

Those 5 key games being "big" or meaningful games.

Random premiership games? Well we are actually doing pretty well with them in general, and the argument could be made any attacking buy could help turn the few draws in to wins.

Then you look outside the field, what does it do to the squad to bring in a 30 year old crock on £300k a week (will be 30 in July)?

We have Eriksen stalling on a contract, I suspect for far less than that, what would he think?

Kane as our best player, he will need at least parity. Alli will have to be up there...

There isnt, IMO, a blase "assume we managed the financials". Thats the biggest stumbling block right there.

Talks of £60m+ and no doubt £300k a week, for a 30 year old, for the potential of having a player how *might* be fit to turnt he Burnley game our way.

And, at 30, its fair to assume his fitness is only going to wane and decline.

The math just doesnt work, not even close. Not for Spurs. Its got Utd or City written all over it.

And I say all this as a big fan of him. I think he is spectacular, and (when fit ;) ) could do wonderful things in a side like ours.

I bet Bale is crying into his pillow this evening with the return of Zidane, they didn't have the best working relationship and the rumour was not selling him aided Zidane's departure.

Yep, Bale is going to have to look for a new club this summer.

I can think of one club, and chief executive in particular, that's itching to pay him 400+k a week.

Zidane has probably already confirmed that Bale is gone and had guarantees of a few fresh galacticos coming in. I can't see why he would have gone back otherwise.
