Harry Winks

He ups his performance for big games. And only needs to add 2 things to his game:

1. Accurate shooting. Once he starts getting goals he will quickly become cult.

2. Occasionally he is ousted from the ball by stronger players. Modric was always quick to turn out of trouble and plenty strong to avoid this.

If Winks can address these two things he will become one of the very best.

I agree, he is still a work in progress which was slowed down by the injury he got last season. But he has just turned 23 and i am sure he will be one that becomes a top player.

At 23 his time is now. I think a few people forget his age. But as a player who is not reliant on pace he can play until his mid 30's at least. AS you put it, he needs to add a goal every now and then. With the position he plays the odd late run into the box or if he can improve his shooting from outside the box and then yes! he will go up in peoples ratings a lot.

The strength thing he can work on himself in the gym, but also with his movement. I just dont want him to learn the scott Parker trick of just rotating all the time and slowing down the attack. Modric would take it on and release the ball forward. More of that and the odd goal would be great.

Everyone always said Modric needed to score more to become a top player. He proved them wrong

Modric was around the age Winks is now when we started playing him in central midfield. Winks comes up short in comparison to the player Modric was back then, but Modric became the best midfielder in the world for a couple of years (imo). That's a ridiculously high bar.

Winks is developing very nicely and is already on his way to replace Dembele for us. I don't think we can ask much more of him than what he's done this season. I think that will be enough for him to be a starter for us long term. If he can become good enough for us to start worrying about wealthier clubs to start worrying us about him only time will tell.

Either way, I don't think he needs goals to provide us with everything we need from that position.

Have to agree, I always hate the suggestion that a deep lying CM has to score more. We’ve heard it with Carrick, Modric and now Winks. It’s nice if they score a few but it’s not what they’re there for, they’re not playing a Lampard or Gerrard position.

I get it that you are not criticising Winksy but I find these comparison rather unfair. Modric had been playing regular top flight football since a much younger age than Winks. Losing almost a year out with injuries did not help either.

I would start doing those comparisons at the end of next season. I suspect we will see a significant improvement in his game by then

I also think Winks has been as effective as Modric was back then

Could be argued he is playing with better players than Luka did

Modric spent 2 years ish playing left side for us and had a lot more experience as said by @braineclipse but from how I remember at the same point he hadn’t had any mega games as we simply didn’t play in any

You can see from his reaction to missing some chances to score in recent matches, its a view not shared by Winks himself (or Poch presumably). He is no doubt practicing hard and he has a decent shot on him. As does Modric.

I'm sure all players dislike missing shots (except possibly Townsend) but that doesn't mean it makes any difference to his ability to perform his role.
