Victimpool FC - Klopp leaving, grown men crying

I think our defensive issues this season stem from midfield more than our defenders.
Certain goals I agree the defensive midfielders have not provided the shield we have had in previous seasons . But not the set pieces goals. We can definitely improve our defending at set pieces.

One good thing about having Llorente in the team which is often overlooked is he is generally quite good at headed clearances in our box from corners etc.

Im sure we can, though its not something Id personally identify as a specific problem. We do defend set pieces pretty well.

EDIT: I know they have injuries, but Liverpool were notably bad at defending set pieces against West Ham the other night.

I think we overestimate how good this partnership is. We concede a lot of cheap goals from set pieces. I think Toby, in particular, is very weak in the air. I would put VvD straight into the first team.

I think we haven't seen this partnership (consistently) for a long time.

We concede cheap goals this season, but lets be honest, when have we had a run with same back 4 and DM in front of them for even 5-7 games?

Although if it’s below waist height it can cause him a problem...

Interesting things our brains. Once we've convinced ourselves of something, it's very difficult to see things any other way. As Spurs fans we all see Spurs allow the odd goal in from a set piece and feel that we're underachieving in that sense.

The reality is that we're 4th best in the PL (joint with Victimpool) for goals scored against us from set pieces:

We're also third best in the PL for goals scored from set pieces, despite constantly being convinced we're brick at them too:

thanks for posting these.

I always find the gulf in wage bills the ultimate attestation to what a great job we are doing even finishing top 4, let alone any higher. We are closer to the bottom team than the fifth biggest spender.

If united get their act together there could be an opportunity to establish a new Sky 4, down to the combination of revenue and consistent CL qualification.

looking at those wages I’m wondering if Goons and Chelsea’s aren’t linked to CL qualification, so every year they miss out they need to find 70m or so before they start thinking about new signings or contracts.

Spot on! It's well established that there's a correlation between wage budget and league position. Going by wages we should expect to be 6th or 7th. Perhaps getting top 4 once in a while in a good season if others have poor seasons. That consistent top four finishes isn't widely accepted as a fantastic achievement and success is utterly unfair on Pochettino and Levy.

I only hope that this isn't one of those "you only understand once you lose it" situations and that fans that are currently unhappy doesn't get the chance to learn the hard way what kind of achievement this is.

And is exactly the reason we have focused on CL qualification and getting the new stadium....we have to pay the existing players the going rate at some point.
