Toby Alderweireld

That is a BRILLIANT trolling article from a creative point of view;
A) the United board are trying to show that they know a thing or two about football and take decisions on 'football reasons' (obv they don't lol)
B) they are trying to troll Alderwiereld and say "we honestly were going bid, but we're not sure you're all that"

Win-win for us on all PR counts:D

“Jose Mourinho wanted him, he was the one who said we want to bring Alderweireld in, but the board vetoed that as they didn’t know if he could play in a two. There were doubts about that.

Great researched article. Other options they apparently considered going with:-
  • Didn’t know if he could play with a left footer beside him
  • Didn’t know if he could play at international level
  • Didn’t know if he could play Champions League
  • Didn’t know if he could speak English
  • Not confident he could play in the Premier League
  • Unsure if he could play with tattoos or hair gel

I remember some ITK once said our scouts ruled out signing him back when he went to A.Madrid because they had agreed he had a weakness with man marking or something!
Glad we eventually got him though, he's been amazing for most of his time here so far.

After all this time does anyone see a scenario where he does sign a new deal?

Along with Erisken I feel he’s going to be a difficult player to replace, but at least with Eriksen there will be a hefty fee to reinvest and we could amend our style of play a little.

To lose two players if their ability, integrated into our system who appear to be an absolute dream to manage in terms of the quiet efficiency they go about their business. In the case of Toby I believe we need to sign another experienced centre back, I wouldn’t want a pool where we are totally reliant on Jan staying fit.

He’s been excellent this season in fairness. Maybe not quite at the level of his first two seasons but still really good. I think maybe we don’t appreciate how good because of the baggage of last season.

I’m hoping there is less interest in him from top clubs because he’s a year older, not quite the same player and also we can now offer very good wages so we’ll get him to sign. I think it’s my heart ruling my head though.

Either way, I criticized him for how last season went but I’d give him top marks this season given how he has conducted himself and played and I’d give Poch a lot of credit for reintegrating him too.

We are allowed to change our mind, it’s better than stubbornly sticking to a belief even when circumstances change or new evidence comes to light. Poch has even reintegrated Janssen!

In terms of the heart I agree with you, in my head I think he’s a steal at 25m and he’s stengthen whichever club he joins and if we had made an acceptable offer why would he continue to play on his old wages...unless the offer is linked to us being in the new stadium.

If we won the league would that be enough for him and Eriksen to stay?!

Yes, absolutely ..

- United are out, he's 30 in March, he's obviously settled/happy here ..
- I think our last summer was the biggest risk.

For some reason, the truly big clubs never went after Toby, I think it's highly unlikey they will do so in his 30's other than maybe good cover (expensive for that?)

I could easily see the club offering him a 1-2 year extension at summer, what would either party have to lose?

the truly big clubs...

A lot of make-believe going on here. If Toby wants out this summer there will be an army of big clubs all over Europe tripping over themselves to get hold of him, no danger.

He may be going on 30 and gradually slowing but he more than compensates for that with his exceptional anticipation, timing, power, long-range passing and all-round CB skills. That level of CB is pretty rare at the top level and he seems capable of maintaining it for several more seasons imo.

As memory serves the clause is only active for a short window isnt it?

Like - in this two week period he is available for £25m, miss that and its over.

Now Ive no doubt his agent will be shopping him around to make sure things can happen at that point, I just guess its nice to know when itll happen and if it doesnt thats the end of it.

I actually don't want us to buy a replacement for him, want right back and central midfield addressed instead (though I guess no-one will buy our right backs to make space in the squad for a new one). I think Sanchez and Foyth both have huge potential and with Verts next to them it's enough. Might be a bit bumpy for one or two seasons (What season isn't for us?) but the smarter move.

Bigger than Spurs? an army of clubs? that want a 30 year old CB on high wages?

Can but hope that the Bury Becks scores a spectacular free-kick to win the inaugural UEFA Nations League in June and we can cash in on him, whilst he’s still in his 20s.

Coincidentally that two week window is exactly when Levy goes on holidays.
