Harry Winks

On the other hand, Winks needs to develop his own style too. Not sure if he is like just obeying instructions and not having the mindset to take some risks or experiment, however that's exactly what I think he needs to do to break through to the next level.

I think that you misunderstand the role he is being asked to play in the team. If we played a stopper in the same position, I doubt that you would be asking the same of them.

Next level....like beating the reigning champions in the Champions League or winning against Spain in a competitive international? Winks is already more than capable of doing a job at the top level. He's progressing under Poch and if you can't see the value he adds in midfield in terms of pushing us forward after transition then you haven't watched enough Jordan Henderson in your life.

I have to say, I was a wee bit skeptical of the kid earlier, because his passing, while very accurate, was always sideways or backwards. No doubt it's an important tactical role, but I felt he was playing within himself doing that.

The past few games, though, he's played some absolutely lovely passes forward - incisive through-balls, low on the ground and with just the right weight on them to cut through two or three defenders and fall at the feet of a forward to take in his stride.

He's growing bolder with his passing, and that bodes really well for him, and for us. He's also making more forward runs, and just taking more responsibility on the whole - again, this bodes really well for him and us.

Perhaps.

However football fans including us have a tendency of over rating our own players, especially the younger ones.

Taraabt and Bentaleb comes to mind. If Winks doesn't make the step up he is quickly going to end up like them.

That said I trust that Poch and Co are hard at work to push him to the next level.

Ok....

Winks is already showing that he is a standout player in this league

He is dictating the tempo of the team currently third

That’s not us over rating him, that’s a fact as the table doesn’t lie

He is getting better with every game too I’d argue and he is held in very high regard by fans of other clubs

I disagree with that last point. None of my non-Spurs friends rates Winks. Which is absolutely fine by me.

Admittedly, two of them are Liverpool fans (from Hull and Edgware, of course) who rate Henderson much much higher. Fools.

I think that is fairly common for fans to only notice defensive players in other teams who clatter into people and slide all over the place. If you only saw Spurs on MotD, you probably wouldn't notice Winks.

Quite possibly the most bafflingly over rated player ever.

I think Gerrard was grossly over rated, but I could also see exactly why.

Henderson?

He is as bang average a player as can be. Its amazing a club like Liverpool bought him. Its incredible they made him captain. And its simply astonishing the number of people who try and argue he is a top player! (Id deny them that he is even in any way decent, but they go way past that!)

Even in the summer on this very board there were Spurs fans defending him - its mind blowing!

Winks is twice the player Henderson is now, and he is still young and raw. In a few seasons time itll be hilarious to look back to your mates with the "Remember when you thought Henderson was much much better.."?

Reminds me of when I was at school in Essex, there were plenty of Liverpool fans about in the early 90’s and one particularly deluded chap found it absolutely laughable, literally laughing out loud at my statement that I thought Judas was better than Dominic Matteo! Absolutely priceless!

Love Winks, but I think he needs to add a little bit more to his defensive game to be a true indispensable piece, but he's been pretty damn good this season after coming off a hellacious ankle injury. This radar shows how similar he's been to Wijnaldum this year, who has basically been the most important piece of Liverpool's midfield. If he can keep this up and add a little more defensive steel to his game or improve positionally to intercept more passes, he could play 300+ games for us.

Henderson is a good player. Speak to anyone who has any experience in coaching and they are likely to tell you the same thing. He isn't necessarily a player who catches the eye of a casual observer but he is a player who tends to take up the right positions and do the right thing both in and out of possession almost all of the time.

I agree with you however that at 23 Winks is likely to further develop as a player, whereas at 28 Henderson is now probably at his peak.

I really dont think he is. I think he is a headless chicken most of the time who slows play, loses the ball and is generally better suited to the grunt work than anything else.

Glad someone else has recognised how good Wilnaldum has been. He has comfortably been their best player and has hardly got the credit IMO

Henderson is a good player, no idea why Winks is being brought into any debate they are completely different players and skill sets. Henderson was being compared to Dier in the summer, which is a much fairer comparison....
