Paulo Gazzaniga

I wonder if Lloris would have had the reach to touch that deflective cross onto the post...the acid test is how Poch wants his keepers to kick the ball off the ground at the moment he does it far better than Lloris i think but it'll come sooner or later his first major mistake and how he recovers from that.

At the moment he's doing ok..

It's one of those, not quite the same player

- Lloris has amazing reflexes, good positioning, is very brave (will clear out opposition players) and lots of experience
- Gazza has a height advantage that he uses (some very high takes yesterday) and better with his feet.

Still feel Hugo is #1, but more and more comfortable when we see Gazza starting

fascinating to read this thread from the first page to the most recent - he's definitely "done a Sissoko" in terms of the way he's seen by fans. Thought his handling was superb last night and there was a touch more calmness to his distribution on the floor - Hugo always makes me feel like he's going to over/under hit one if the pressure is on.

Definitely more of a challenge to our skipper than anyone he's faced until now at the club.

..and thank GHod for that as our skipper has showed flashes of worrying decline over the last year or so...this at least gives us a way to make it that Lloris doesn't decline through complacency...

Very impressive show from him ( again), i would have no worries to see him in any game going forward.

I've always felt that Lloris is a little overrated - for me the perception of him has caught up with how he actually plays now. He's got some of the best shot stopping skills I've ever seen, but his decision making at times when called to do the "sweeper keeper" bit leaves a lot to be desired.

Gazzaniga's biggest strength over both Lloris and Vorm is he's better with his feet than either of them.

Yeah, his kicking always is a worry. He now seems to panic in most of our big games as well...Gazzaniga's emergence has come at he right time.
I wonder how Gazzaniga would compare to Pau Lopez now actually?

Gazzaniga is definitely better than Vorm

However i do think he is being over-rated and Lloris under-rated especially with the ball at their feet. Plenty of times his clearances went straight out, and seem to remember one second half that was straight to onrushing midfielder.
If Lloris has done the same then everyone goes crazy, but glossed over with Gazzaniga, same as sissoko not getting away with a miscontrolled where Dele its not mentioned.

Was also a lot of people in the crowd yesterday who dont go often are were still stuck in old spurs mode and were laying into sissoko and winks and slagging us off for playing from the back

I gave him MOTM for last nights performance, very solid for such a important game and a great save from the deflected Hudson-~Odoi cross.

As a backup keeper he's more than capable and unlike seeing Vorm on the team sheet I feel confident he'll do a good job.

For me a keeper being good with his feet is irrelevant if he makes bad decisions. There were a couple of lofted passed to Tony close to the corner flag that I wouldn’t have wanted Sanchez to have been the recipient of, and if the defender is then under so much pressure they have to lump it anyway you might as well cut out the middle man.

Gazzaniga has a more dominant physique than Lloris and can kick further. Was surprised with the ones that went out but given the situation I guess it was safer than going down the middle and having it come straight back.

I’m not Lloris’ biggest fan but he is capable of 10:10 games due to his incredible shot stopping reflexes. The sweeper keeper thing was an asset too, except he started to do it less and I think with less confidence now. It’s the 4 out of 10 games or the brain farts that eventually cost keepers their place. Gazzaniga is looking a solid 7 or 8 every game which is a good sign considering he’s by getting runs of games. Vorm has done ok but ever been a challenger to Lloris.

Any chance Gazzaniga played those passes because it was Alderweireld who was the receiving player?

I think his decision making looks just fine. But those shanked clearances gets punished at times, and it's terrible when that happens.

Hopefully. Just an observation. Lloris floats balls out to the full backs which is the sort of pass I hate receiving as it just invites a clattering or you end up being the person who loses the ball by just helping on. Not a criticism of Gazzaniga per se, more the way goalkeepers seems to be going / judged in general.

agree that the pace of pass is what lets Lloris down at times - he's as likely to float a pass as under play one pace wise, which is just as bad....
