Toby Alderweireld

For me it is straightforward. Toby wants a better contract. Spurs have had their chance. He wants a crack from other clubs. Bye Toby.

He'd be stupid to leave now. Our prospects are looking good and he'll have more time to assess his options come the summer.

Wonder whether he'd actually decide to go in the summer or wait til the year after?

What I mean is a club would have to pay £25m to get him, whereas a year later he could walk for free. Lets say his market value the year after has fallen to £15m given his age. In theory he could ask for that £15m from a new club as wages given its a saving on a transfer fee - £15m is £100k pw over a 3 year contract

If that was his intention, you think we would put up with it?

I dont see Poch playing nice all season knowing he was leaving on a free. Chances are he would push him out in the summer anyway.

And thats beside the fact a player of Alderweirelds quality WILL be in massive demand, especially at £25m

If the reports are correct that we would have let him go in the summer for 25mil and received no offers, it may turn out that Toby's advisors have backed him into a corner.

At 25mil he looks like a bargain, but 30yr old defenders with a questionable injury record aren't really the in thing anymore. Different level but Jonny Evans went for 3mil to Leicester

Perfect Vincent Company replacement.
And his injury record is certainly better.

I find the whole Toby contract poker game Levy and Toby's agents are playing absolutely fascinating. It looks like he will go in the summer but then, it looked like he would go this one too. Interesting that we didn't receive any offers but would have been open to a ~25M bid last summer and didn't get one...maybe a full season injury free means he gets his move, or maybe clubs decide if they are going to add an experienced defender rather than one that is ~24 years old, they might as well wait until he's on a free. At which point, Toby would have to decide whether yet another year on 50k is really worth it and he signs improved terms with us. The lost earnings are piling up.

I would think the price would have been in the £50m range last year. He didn't play much in the 2nd half of the season though which may have put people off.

That rumour doesn't make sense to me either

It doesn't really, other than the fact that if Poch wanted a big name out in order to get a younger big name in for that position. We've seen with the details on Llorente's contract that he's supposedly on 100k a week and cost £14M, so maybe it is much about specific roles in the squad being filled as opposed to always making the best financial decision. The fact that he didn't ultimately leave means he needed to be fully reintegrated as a senior player.

I reckon we would have taken say £35M last summer.

I can see Liverpool coming in for him the minute the £25m clause activates. He'd be an upgrade on Lovren, what they'd offer him compared to us would be no reason for him to think twice on that front, and they probably wouldn't find it difficult to convince him he'd stand a better chance of honours with them either (which I believe is an important consideration for him), especially if they win it this year. Man U might not be able to be so persuasive there.

That would sting.

This is a horrible scenario I hadn’t thought of!
