The Official 2018/19 Premier League Thread

Depends on how you watch that game, City may not have torn Pool apart, but they controlled the game, nullified all three of Pools front line for the vast majority of game.

Penalty call on Sterling should have been given and the game would have been dead at 60 odd minutes.

Pool was left hoping for a counter break, I think it was clear who was the better side on the night (and that's with KDB not coming on).

Emirates Marketing Project were the home team so I would expect them to be the better side. They fully deserved to win but I don’t think it was as comfortable as some of the pundits are making out. Going forward I’d back Emirates Marketing Project to win the title but I can see both teams getting around 90 points and the title going down to the last day.

Pool rely on 3 key players. Without any of Mane, Salah, and VD they are weaker. Wouldn't wish injury on any player of course, but lose one of them and they could be more vulnerable.

The goalkeeper makes a massive difference too. If he gets injured, it could affect the back 4.

I've got them dropping 4 points over the next 6 games (Leicester at home and Man U away) vs 2 points each dropped by us and City (draws with Man U and Chelsea, respectively). I know it's a silly waste of time and it won't pan out like that probably (we're just as likely to go and lose at Fulham or Burnley in reality), but it would make it interesting if it did:
LIVP 67
MANC 66
TOTT 64

The trouble we have, is the two teams we have the most trouble with and I never feel confident in matching up with, is Liverpool and City, our two title rivals.

Losses to either of them just kills us.

Where are Liverpool going to drop the rest of these points, then? Apart from when we beat them, obviously.

They don't have to lose matches either.. A couple of flukey draws when we or City manage to win and the pressure will start to build.

Really good bit on finances in the Premier League. Also highlights how massively doped City are.

Just quoting this again as it got lost among the 20 odd pages of the unofficial Liverpool Match Thread...

The bottom table in that link has us down as sitting on a cash balance of 170m +/- (calculated over the past ten years accounts) but with the caveat that it's skewed by mostly being made up of cash advances on our recent loans for the stadium... Is there anywhere that would show how much (ballpark) of that balance is from loans rather than a general accumulation of profit over the years, or does anyone have an idea of what that figure would be?

Exciting stuff for a Friday morning im sure you'll agree

Does donkey work and fouls
Pool need 3 players to do that

He has the subtlety Chielini would applaud. City miss him when he is out.

How many games have Wijnaldum, Henderson and Milner started this season? Seems a strangely negative choice against a team that have struggled to contain their more attacking play.

Brighton away next could be tricky.

He’s like the rest - a professional guesser. None of them have a clue what is going to happen, it’s all just bluster to fill hours of airtime.
Like most footballers, he's simply lacking the cognitive agility to fully understand and discuss football.

At half time he was was using the fact that City had dropped off to show that they were exhausted, despite
  1. That being precisely the same on/off pressing system he employed at Barca
  2. The fact that they had just scored and it made perfect tactical sense to ease off, consolidate and hold until half time
  3. The fact that Victimpool's tactics are the least intelligent in the league and they only know "run everywhere at 100mph" - if you let them run themselves out then the game is yours

Kompany clearly won the ball, all this talk of a straight red is complete nonsense.

From the laws of the game: "Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play."

Nothing in there about winning the ball.

Oh how the game has changed, played mens football for over 20 years and did that ever match and was only sent off once as a 19 year old for calling a ref a cheating bastard.

So Lovren should have had a red fro his foul earlier when he got booked too

Definitely, that was actually the worse foul in my opinion, he was nowhere near the ball, his soul intention was to wipe out Aguero and he got a proper piece of him.

Whereas Kompany clearly made a genuine attempt for the ball and got contact on it as well, his follow through took him in to Salah. It’s tough because when I was growing up (and up till a few years ago even) this would be deemed a great tackle, so I still can’t get my head round these new effectively no contact rules that are being interpreted now. Was genuinely stunned when Jan was shown a red vs the Gooners as well, it had no bearing on the outcome, we’d have lost anyway, but just seemed a crazy decision to me.

But I am sure you are not saying it is ok to fly into a tackle studs up, out of control and land with one or both feet on the opponent's ankle if you make contact with the ball first? Or to follow through onto someones knee or ankle. For me the rule is simple you cannot tackle dangerously full stop, irrespective of whether you win the ball or not. Kompany's follow through landed on Salah 's ankle, intent or no intent. Now despite Salah being an odious taco, that tackle was imo a foul and warrants at least a yellow card for Kompany.

Players are worth a fortune these days and if they are out for a long time it can have a significant effect on the team as we know only too well. We have to protect them to a certain extent.

Looks like we're all waiting for no.3

Is that tackle from the Tranmere keeper on Moura ok? Seemed pretty similar to the Konpany challenge but everyone’s saying this is fine?
