Toby Alderweireld

I hope there was a discussion and he told everyone that with the crazy schedule until the new year that players would all get rotated at various times. Otherwise their relationship might be truly f#%ked now after this wkd, if it wasnt already. Who knows?

Excerpt from The Independent pre-match article:

Pochettino appears likely to make some changes to his side given their congested fixture list, which sees them play nine games in 30 days.

He added: “We are assessing them, maybe yes, maybe no. If we feel the player is going to take some risks then of course we are going to rest.

“It is not important the name. If we believe we need to rest some players we are going to rest, we are not going to take a risk.

“We are going to put in a player that we believe can cope with 90 minutes of effort.

“We know you cannot 100 per cent avoid the risk on the player but we need to be sure the players that are going to play are ready to compete.”

Hindsight of course, but Toby's experience would have been vital at the back IMO. As much as I rate Foyth, for a NLD derby away, you want calm and experienced heads out there. Not saying that would've made a big difference, as most players were poor yesterday, but I'd still play a fit Toby over Foyth at the Emirates.

Dont buy this because Arsenal have pace in attack Toby didnt play at all. Hes played against plenty of pacy strikers and snuffed them out with positioning and timing of the tackle. You dont become one of the top CBs in Europe by just playing well against paceless big lumps....

Until a year ago - absolutely. But he's not the same player since his injuries/long lay offs though. He's looking more like late career Dawson in the high line these days.

Like most on here I felt before kick off that Aldereiweld should have started. In normal circumstances Aldereiweld's experience ought always to trump Foyth's youth and pace in a match of this intensity.

However it was clear from the way most of the team played against Arse that concentration and match sharpness were widely lacking. The sheer number of crazy, unforced errors and lack of application - especially by the second half - spoke of spent energy and weary legs.

Going by his pre-match comments it seems likely that Poch could already see prior to the game that speed, application and energy were going to be a problem at the Emirates. For most of us the decision looked dodgy from the moment the team-sheet was announced. But what we do not know of course is what Poch and his coaching staff could see.

Maybe he and his coaches concluded that a third high-intensity game in eight days would be a bridge too far the aging Alderweireld whereas the pace and youth of Foyth might be enough to make the difference. It turned out to be the mistake we all feared but maybe it was simply a case of no matter who he picked there would have been a price to pay one way or another?

In fairness though, I am sure no one expected Jan to have such an awful game. Yes, he is just back from injury and might be a bit match rusty. But that was more than rustiness on Sunday. His should have been the experienced, guiding head alongside Foyth.

Edit : I meant assuming there was good reason not to start Toby

Yeah, essentially all the players that have left (Walker) other than Bale, refused to sign new contracts (Toby) or have been critical of the club (Rose) are over the hill, past it, not as good as the players that played in their places last year (Trippier, Sanchez and Davies).

That's his move to United permanently put to bed then. No way any new coach is going to be demanding they pay up for a 30 year old with iffy hamstrings

I don't know, have you seen Utd's central defenders? That backline needs some serious quality and experience added and should be the number one priority for any new manager and Alderweireld would be a good option for them.

We should hang on to Toby at all costs this season and i'd rather the club keep him even if it means not buying anyone else this transfer window....he is that important to the team and squad! IMO.

He's important, and for it's worth he seems a total professional, still looks like enjoys the team, no risk

I honestly think his window (like Rose) is gone, older, a few more injuries, still good but not the absolute monster he was.

He may want to rethink if he will find a better team than us for significantly more money that the new Spurs wage structure.

Still one of the best cbs in the league for £25 million? No brainer.

We're also overplaying his injury issues. He played 38 and then 30 league games first 2 seasons. 14 last season but he was clearly dropped, at least partly, for non football reasons after return from his injury.

Also played 15 of 17 games so far this season.
