Toby Alderweireld

For me, you don’t get any credit for the latter when you are responsible for the former.

The conversation over his future will be very different next summer compared to this.

It's really interesting, I think he, along with Rose really overplayed their hands. Maybe yes, there is something to be said for striking while the iron is hot and getting the best move and the most money for yourself and your family, but there is also something to be said for knowing when you have a good thing, knowing why it is good, and trying to prolong that.

He could have gotten a longer contract on 130k a week and been secure. He may still get there somewhere else but he really needs to perform to do it, and if we've correctly deduced his physical ability is on the decline then there may not be other clubs willing to pay over 130k or on it. Without even making reference to the loyalty aspects, and the aspect of if you see that your boss has gone to bat for you that you shouldn't then let your agent up the demands again, I think there is just something to be said for knowing when you have a good thing.

Lloris, Jan, Dier and Dembele could all have probably made bigger fusses over the years to get more money, but there's never been a serious hint of it. (Not referring to Dembele's contract running down or Jose trying to tap up Dier). They seemed to know what they had, knew they were improving, and kept on the good path. Rose and Toby seemed to want to push too far, and they've risked their standing with a Manager who would have done anything for them had they repaid his loyalty in the right way.

I might have a distorted memory but he seems to often be the one who makes big mistakes in Champions League run-ending games. If I was levy I would definitely be raising it as a point in contract negotiations if he's asking for parity with Kane etc

Excellent post. As a fan I now just can’t feel the same way about Toby as I used to - indeed when he now makes yet another mistake I feel quite vitriolic towards him for being an arrogant, greedy, underperforming, slick-haired clam.

Probably number of games, physios red zone etc. he trusts Foyth and didn't want to lose Toby through injury.

Foyth had got ahead of him in the pecking order and perhaps Poch was specifically worried about his pace against Arsenal's attack?
Dont buy this because Arsenal have pace in attack Toby didnt play at all. Hes played against plenty of pacy strikers and snuffed them out with positioning and timing of the tackle. You dont become one of the top CBs in Europe by just playing well against paceless big lumps....

Love Foyth but I would have played Toby.
I know some will claim this is classic hindsight but I thought this before the game. Im not as sold as some on Foyth's defending abilities yet, he has demonstrated on several occassions how shaky he can be and I just didnt see this as a game for him. Thats not me knocking him, he's young and its to be expected he makes such errors. But this was a game for Toby all day long for me....

I do wonder if he's in the 'red zone' atm and Poch was worried he'd go the way of Sanchez and have a breakdown before the xmas rush.

However, i'd have still played him then rested him vs Southampton.

I also wonder if poch didn't take too kindly to his comments about the game 'not being the most important' a day or two beforehand - gosh i really wish our players would shut it before the NLD:mad:

Pochettinho imo got that wrong but for noble reasons. I thought he would have played Toby (if fit) and he was on the bench so?

I might have gone with a back three of Toby, Foyth and Jan and sacrificed Son or even Harry.
hindsight is a wonderful thing as they say.

I hope there was a discussion and he told everyone that with the crazy schedule until the new year that players would all get rotated at various times. Otherwise their relationship might be truly f#%ked now after this wkd, if it wasnt already. Who knows?

Poch was saying 'it was just three points' or the like. Now I'm not a NLD fanboy, I don't care in the slightest about arsenal. My big matches are Liverpool and then Chelsea and then West Ham as it happens.
Arsenal is local fan thing imo, I'm SW London so more Chelsea but Liverpool are my pet dislike.
