Jan Vertonghen

This isn't a problem so long as Alder and Sanchez stay fit for a bit now. After the WC, 6 weeks with his feet up might be exactly what his body needs for the longer term.

Except it's six weeks of recovering from an injury and doing the rehab to get back to full fitness, init.

How is it not a problem? He's been our best cb for the past season and a bit.

Not to mention that we're a Toby injury away from having to field a combination of Sanchez/ Dier/ Foyth at centre back, with none of them particularly adept at organising the defence or being the lead cb.

If we have both first choice CBs out, we still have Sanchez, and it will just be very hard luck on us. We have enough depth there.

It’s an injury, it happens. It’s why we bought Foyth anyway, to play him.

Except he's yet to be given even a minute's run out so far this season. Was on the bench for the Carrier Bag Cup tie against Watford, a game he would normally have expected to start. So maybe still not fully match fit following recovery from a thigh strain?

He's away with the Argentinian national side at the moment, so must be fit enough

Pointless having Foyth in the squad if we’ve no confidence in using him. Luckily I think Poch has more faith in him than some fans.

We’ve a pool of Jan, Toby, Sanchez and Foyth with Dier and Davies able to cover as well. That’s plenty in my opinion and the standard is good.

Absolutely not saying we won’t miss Jan by the way, he’s a great centre back and probably our best. Just that we have good back up so not sure what more we can do and don’t get the digs at the club.

agreed

I think the system doesn't get the credit though, whichever 5/6 we send out our defence is normally greater than the sum of its parts
