Harry Winks

As long as fitness issues are alleviated and there is no unexpected departures, I would still expect Onomah and KWP to be sent out on loan for the season.

Good carefully selected loans however.

Agree about Walker-Peters. But I actually think we might need Onomah this season, and I think it might be one of his last shots at Spurs too. It's a window of opportunity for him, before we sign new senior players and other younger academy boys come up.

With the injury problems Wanyama, Dembele and Winks had last season the lack of signings this summer might be an indication that Pochettino thinks Onomah is ready for that step up.

Poch: "It is a chronic injury. He needs to adapt and understand and accept that he needs to play with this little bit of pain. For a young player it is difficult to accept that because you want to feel 100% and not feel anything in your body."

The full quote are quite interesting:

"Harry has the profile of the midfield player perfect. But I don't want to talk and praise his quality too much because if so his head [grows big]. His perception will be 'wow' and the reality is you still need to prove [yourself].

"The characteristics are perfect to play football. When we talk about midfielders, because you like to use Spanish midfielders like Xavi and Iniesta, he's like this type of player, this capacity.

"But please, he needs to take in a very positive way my words. He needs a lot of work. He has the possibility and the potential but now it is up to him and we go again: mentality.

"In his mind, he is capable to learn to suffer, that there never is enough training, to always try to be better, [to learn that] football is his focus, not business that is around football.

"Maybe [if he learns this] he will arrive to play in a very good level and be one of the best midfielders in England. It is not my advice, it is only how I describe the reality. If he wants to take it, take it.

"But of course his potential is to be a very, very good player for England and Tottenham -- first for Tottenham and then, if England believe that he can help them, for England too.

"If you ask all the players today, it is impossible to play without pain in some point of your body, because you use your body for work.

"It's not a normal body because you push it from a very young age. It's not a healthy sport, it's a professional sport, and you always try to push your body and touch the limits, or cross them sometimes.

"For him, it was new. He had an injury and an operation last summer and of course that is something that will always be there. The psychology is that you have suffered and are not free.

"You need to learn to live with this situation, and he is now much better and stronger in his mentality. I'm sure he will move on and make a step up. It's only time to get to his best for the team."

is that translated from English to Spanish via Google. And then back again ?

Not an novel take, but my GHod, this kid is sooooooo good, and Winks getting back to full fitness is so important for us. I was looking back at the 4-1 against LFC last season, and I'd forgotten that he anchored the entire midfield without Dier, Dembele OR Wanyama. A few days before, he anchored a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu with Sissoko alongside him. A few weeks after that, he was the lynchpin of a 3-1 win over RM with Dier alongside him, but no Dembele.

He's the key that unlocks Dele and Christian to be deep creators without sacrificing the two up top and the rightful heir to Dembele's role. He hasn't started a game since February, but it sounds like he's coming back to full fitness. If he does, I can't wait to see the impact he'll make.

Just hope his injury won't hold him back.

Pochettino sounded quite confident in how it's being managed and how Winks is dealing with it. Also quite strong on the impact he's expecting from him this season. Hope we see him start a lot of games in the coming weeks and months.

I feel / worry that something weird is going on with our squad this summer, in term of its mentality. Obviously Poch is praising less generally and being more demanding, and I think part of that is because he thinks the squad is experienced enough to handle a bit more pressure and now is the right time to apply that. But part of me does worry that he has seen something in the squad in their return to pre-season, maybe a drop in intensity, a lack of focus perhaps, that has meant he feels the need to keep reminding them.

Like he is being broadly positive with Winks, but I'm actually pretty surprised he even felt the need to remind Winks that he needs to focus on playing football and not the business of football. I thought Winks was very much of the right mentality and knew what he needed to do, and that's why Poch likes him.

Maybe it's just the rubbish September we have had, but with Lloris, Moura going nuts on Twitter, even someone who I thought was a perfect mentality guy like Winksy needing a gentle kick...is our squad just too distracted? Being into its hype a little bit? Taking their foot off the gas a bit?

Name on the sheet today ? He needs to step up and take that midfield mantle, our leader in the middle. I like him, he's an intelligent and very aware lad-player.
Time to build up his mental strength and physique, the time now is yours Harry lad.

It’s Dier plus Dembele or Winks, i think he’ll go Dembele though?

Once Winks is back fully fit I think that could change?

If Dembele can handle 60-90 mins, it should be him and Dier. Winks was one of the bright spots against Watford but he’s been out a long time.

He can replace Dembele mid-long term in my view but isn’t quite there yet. Would be too big a risk to throw him in today from the start I believe.

Counting the days for him to start as our midfield anchor. I don't know how many days I'll have to count, but I hope it's not too many.

Sick and tired of central midfielders that can't pass and move quickly.
