Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar has hit back at critics of his World Cup theatrics, saying they "will never understand".

Criticism of Neymar was widespread, leading to memes of the player dominating social media sites and a TV advert poking fun at the Brazilian being broadcast in South Africa.

Neymar has taken the mockery in his stride but made it clear the treatment he receives is no laughing matter

"Do you think I want to suffer tackles all of the time? No, it is painful, it hurts," he said.

"After the games I stay back for four or five hours putting on ice, it's complicated but if you haven't experienced that you will never understand. I saw [the jokes], but I took them with a humour.

"Even yesterday I posted on Instagram a joke with the children about it. My football is to dribble, to face the opponent, I can't stand in front of the opponent and say 'my dear, excuse me I want to score a goal', I can't do that.

"I have to dribble past him, I have to try to do something and he will not allow me to go past and he will try to foul me. A lot of time I'm faster and lighter than other players and they tackle me, and the referee is there for that."

Neymar, who has been widely linked with Real Madrid as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, insists he will be staying with French champions PSG.

The former Barcelona player has also backed Ronaldo to "change Italian football" after he joined champions Juventus from Real Madrid in a deal worth £105m

Has he stopped rolling yet?

The main criticism isn't about him "diving" to avoid a tackle, it's the blatant cheating. When he pretends to be hit in the face when he wasn't even touched. Or when he does a backflip when a defender lightly touches his body with a hand.
Exactly. Someone like Rose does the same without the amateur dramatics.

the problem is you dont get given the fouls without the "amateur dramatics". the problem is more with the refs and the "culture" surrounding football imo

Can't remember Greavsie or Best rolling round on the floor and they got kicked from pillar to post when ABH was common practice with defenders.

theres still a long way to go in terms of cutting out thuggish behavior in football. my analogy would be that people who suffer from racism today shouldnt have to put up with it just because there was more racism back in the 50s.

Wow

Players rolling round pretending they have been kicked or hit will not stop serious bad play as people claiming to have been discriminated against when they have not will not help improve race relations.

Mind you:

Slight foul there, and he's had a bang in the back!

Talking about Best, he used to get the brick kicked out of him every time he played for Utd. I was working there at the time and the MENews had a picture taken of him after a Saturday game. He was dressed only in his grundies and his a whole body was covered in cuts and bruises.

One of the best players i have ever seen and he was kicked in the air every time he played but even that could/did not stop him.

no one is saying "Players rolling round pretending they have been kicked or hit will not stop serious bad play". the diving is a consequence of the way the game is reffed. and to your point, surely you can understand why people who are constantly abused (eg. racially) decide to retaliate.

No you don't. Stop exaggerating man.

people often say "he hasn't even been touched" - which is often just as big an exaggeration. i dont think anyone genuinely thinks hes spends hours in an ice bath. its obvious he wasnt being literal.

whilst the likes of best should be commended, imo not enough is being done to question former players for some of their disgraceful attempts at assault. much like individuals from history who are having their statues taken down surely some of these players from the mid 1900s need to be seriously questioned. its amazing how some of these guys are still seen as heroes or cult figures.
