Wouldn't be disappointed if Dan Kilpatrick had time called on his days as a Spurs 'correspondent'. Running that Islington locator in his Tweets hardly inspires confidence.

Hard to find someone who more quickly opts for the negative in covering Spurs. He doesn't have to be a cheerleader, but a balanced perspective would be nice. This guy is a borderline WUM with his preferred tone. Doesn't balance his sour drabness with anything positive about the club, the stadium, the whole upward trend Spurs are on. On the whole, ESPN are dreadful in their Spurs coverage.

At least when I last looked and that was a while back - after they were tub-thumping Poch's imminent departure.

I actually think since he’s moved to the Standard he’s become even more negative - it’s like he tries so hard not to appear biased that he goes too much the other way. I liked him at first but the last two weeks, with the Poch stories as well, it actually makes him seem less informed than he is because of the tone he takes. When he can be justifiably positive he isn’t.

He’s clearly good at his job but it’s just a personal preference for me - there’s probably a middle ground somewhere between Ali Gold’s relentless positivity and Dan KP’s ‘balance’.

Chelsea have about roughly a million players out on loan (https://www.chelseafc.com/en/teams/on-loan-players), a large number of which are younger players. Any reason why we couldnt sign him up to a 3 year deal and loan out for two years, pick up say 50% of his wages and then see where he gets to? Would only need marginal improvement for his sale value to cover the cost of his wages...

As I say - I would fully expect buy back options and sell on clauses. Its quite possible we wont have seen the last of him in a Spurs shirt.

Have we ever inserted a buy-back option for any player we have sold? Does not seem an "English" thing to do... though it would be standard in most of Europe.

If there was ever a situation where a buy-back option is essential, it is Edwards. Has so much potential, if he can only mature...

A cheap fee with a 10mill buyback after 3 years should be our goal

Theres the famous Bale one, obviously.

I believe we also had a sell on clause with Sigurdsson, so made some money when Everton bought him.

I dont think its uncommon in England, particularly in lower level clubs that sell talent up the pyramid.

If Edwards is such a player, Id fully expect us to speculate on such clauses.

You are mixing first option and sell on with buy back.

What we have with Bale is first option, namely the right to match any accepted offer for him, However if Utd offer 100mill, that means tiddlywinks!! Sell on is also totally different; we do that commonly - Pritchard, Siggy, LIvermore etc - and so do most teams in England; but all that means is that we just get a percentage cut of any future transfer.

Buyback is completely different. We sell Edwards BUT insert a clause allowing us to buy him for a pre-set fee as long as we trigger the clause by a certain date; and the team would would have bought Edwards can do nothing about it. Very common in Spain and Italy - e.g. Real bought back Morata after two years with Juve, despite the Italians wanting to keep him...

Never seen it applied in the UK; as i said, I guess it's not a "British" thing to do, I guess. :D

All variations on the theme, its not like I determined in legalise exactly what clause would be put in is it?

Buy back - did City not put something in the Ihenacho deal to that effect? Ill have a look...

Either way, I woudlnt personally discount the idea based on being in Britain, I think its something we will see more and more of.

Especially Spurs specifically, if, as it looks, we will struggle to accomodate the talent the academy produces.

I blame Sherwood. The guy made a fuss out of Edwards in order to boost his own stock without a thought on how it would affect him. Every Spurs fan listening instantly looked him up and overhyped him. He and his family/agent believe the hype and expect everything to be given to him, whilst further fuss is made about him from the fans and online media. Last summer and the contract problems likely are a highlight of that and slowed down his progression.

Now he's at a crossroads where his talent may not be enough and his work ethic and mentalitiy are being called into question.

I do believe we are at a stage where young players will struggle to advance, but I also think that there are gaps in the squad in order for people like Edwards to improve.

Was thinking the same recently re Sherwoods comments on him - hard to apportion blame but i do think he inadvertently put a lot of pressure on the kid, can't remember the last time a youth players development became such a talking point tbh - 16/17 is no age and it's a shame for Edwards himself if the over exposure knocked him off track

I think this is unfortunately on Edwards, not in a 'blame' sense, just in the sense that he clearly wasn't of the level of mental maturity to make it at our club. I don't think for a second he'll go anywhere else and make it to CL level.

We've given plenty of players high praise, almost deliberately to see how they'll react. Winks gets told he is the perfect midfielder and he is still the same modest, hard working guy he was before the comments are made. For some reason Edwards just wasn't getting it. People have even cited family problems or a difficult upbringing, but it hasn't held Dele back. If you've got the right mentality you'll make it, if not here than somewhere. But if you've got great talent and the right mentality, you probably will make it here.

I feel bad for Edwards if his agent listened to the hype Sherwood gave him. But Sherwood also said Tom Carroll could play for Barcelona. Praise shouldn't effect how you go about learning, improving, concentrating, committing. Poch brought Edwards into comparison with Messi to see if that would work. He's also called him out publicly and that hasn't worked. He's also been sent on loan to a club with good standards and was told the exact same thing.

I think the praise for Winks came after he had broken into the first team. Likewise Carroll was first team, as was Dele at MK Dons. I don’t disagree that some of this might be on Edwards himself, but the expectation and hype put on him is not quite so comparable given he was still a development player, albeit on the periphery of the first team.

@BrainOfLevy I simply believe that his mental maturity has been hampered by the spotlight being on him at such a young age. Without it, he might have kept working hard, knowing that he needed to in order to make it. Being praised so early on may have left him believing that he could just make it on talent alone.

Slight flaw to your theory.....who the f.ck listens to Sherwood?

I personally believe these players are going to face tougher mental challenges in their careers than being the subject of hype from the youth teams. If that was really his downfall I don't think he ever stood a chance. I don't blame him because it's tough for teenagers to have the perspective of what works in the world, but it is a shame that he had the GHod-given talent, and just needed to show the right attitude.

Players have to keep working hard regardless of the hype and the pressures. They also have to keep doing the things that show they don't have an attitude problem - turning up late for training and team meetings is just such a simple thing to get right and if he wasn't doing it, he didn't stand a chance.

I don't blame our club or feel like we have lost anything. If he was going to make it, with his talent we would have done everything to get him close. And I think the integrity around our standards are too important to not maintain for one player.

And alternative is that this is the first time he has come up against a challenge.

Players like Winks, I sense, have had to push themselves since the first day to work through each group and develop.

Edwards seems like the sort of natural talent that will have found it very easy to breeze through - up to a point.

Its that formative experience that instils the right ethics in a player, I would suggest its possible Edwards is only just reaching the point where he gets those lessons. At a time that is relatively late in proceedings, where certain habits and attitudes have already formed and need to be over come.

Just a thought...
