New Contracts

Do you think we might sell off some senior players and put faith in these young guns?

The GNK type signings certainly don’t make sense anymore. Use the youth players to fill out the squad.

I think it depends on the young players.

If they look like they will be good enough I think it will be a consideration when contracts/selling opportunities come up.

I still have no issue with GKN type signings either. Clearly recent ones havent worked, but at one time that was Alli, Rose, Eriksen, Walker...

Speculating on youth is part of what has made us what we are.

Though I do expect now much more "certain" (and expensive) speculation like Sanchez.

No .. Winks/Sanchez would hardly be "putting faith" in youngsters, CCV & KWP are potentials, still more likely to see loan time than 1st team. I expect team to be

- Core spine/group of always in first 11 .. Lloris, Sanchez, Jan, Eriksen, Deli, Kane
- Key players likely to be in most selected teams .. Trippier, Davies, Dier, Wanyama, Son, Lamela, Lucas
- Squad options .. Foyth, Vorm, Winks, Aurier
- Academy/Youth prospects .. KWP

Left TA, Dembele, Rose, Llorente & Sissoko & loanees out, as really don't know what the vision is there.

My interpretation

- We work on merit, players need to earn each step up, for everyone that succeeds, several will fail

We probably want to buy 1 or 2 that fit into top group, +some squad options +a couple more new youth level that could develop over time.

I see our first 11 becoming harder for young players to break into vs. easier.

Very interested in what happens with Onomah this summer, whether he'll get an improved contract and have a chance in CM.

I might die on this hill, but I swear he's good enough to play CM for us. I've watched most of his games for Villa, and he has some really special traits, especially his ability to run with the ball in CM and his progressive passing (which ranked in the Top 5 in the whole championship by a solid model). I'm not saying he's Dembele yet, but he can do a little bit of everything and feels like a really modern midfielder to me. Interestingly, he's always linked up really well with Grealish, who is really the only Spurs-type (i.e. not brick) midfielder they have.

He's played a lot of minutes for probably the most pressure-packed club in the division for a bunch of fans who didn't have anything invested in his success, and he's helped them get within one game of going up. I hope he gets a real chance in CM this summer.

I still think his issue isnt his ability, but his head/attitude/mentality. Seems a bit of a Jenas to me, passive.

I think, as it stands, at best he is in the squad as something like 6th choice hoping for an opening.

I havent seen enough from him to suggest he would be in contention for consideration at all at this point.

Would be a shame to see him go, because there is clear potential, but it is what it is at this point.

I got told by someone high up,

bloke who lives in the flat above the guy i buy weed from

That poch will be put on gardening leave for 12 months like Mitchell was before being allowed to move to an English club, but interestingly he is allowed to go to Celtic or Cardiff or Swansea with just a months notice.

Are they in partnership (the guy you buy from and the guy above him) if so it sounds like he is sampling his own product to much. ;)

I think it's more about physicality. He dominates his peers, but at 20 he isn't strong enough yet to do that to the likes of Pogba and Kante.

When Dembele was Onomah's age, he was a skinny winger who'd just signed for PSV. I think Onomah just needs time to mature into a beast, like Dembele did through his mid-20s.

Im not saying Onomah cant or wont change, Im simply observing what I see now.

And its not physicality that is his issue, IMO, its in his head. Its like he is unsure, not confident, not aggressive enough.

He needs that bit that all top players have, the one that says "I know I belong here and Im going to show you why". Ive never seen it in him.

And, eventually, time will run out. Either he delivers or he moves. I feel that time is pretty much upon us with him, if he stays this summer itll be his last chance IMHO.

Thats not to say he wont go on to improve/be great/the one that got away or anything like that. Maybe he will? Maybe this summer he will step up and finally push through here? As it stands though that looks unlikely.

Agree, he has shown some potential but Onomah really hasnt done anything of note to be spoke about as replacing Dembele - if he wasnt a Spurs player would he be spoke about at all? I seriously doubt it...

I still think we don’t see enough of these guys to truly form a opinion!
But little I’ve seen I agree!

I hear what you're saying to some extent, but which players have shown that at club level aged 20? From all accounts, he's been a leader of England squads and has always stood out at that level.

If you look around the country — aside from Rashford and Alexander-Arnold — who else in his age group at an elite team should he be more like? Maitland-Niles at Arsenal looks promising, but he's far from bossed games that he's been a part of. When Pogba was his age, he had barely played for Sir Alex and was just starting to find his feet at Juventus.

People said the same things about Harry Winks, but he got a real chance here and took it. Josh has never had a chance here in CM, and if we don't give him one, I feel like it could end up being a huge mistake.

And just to be clear, there are plenty of English players aged 20 who are playing games for teams around the country, but not at elite teams. I think if Onomah was at a Southampton or a team like that, he may have easily racked up twice as many appearances by now.

That’s the problem though, he’s had a couple of short cameo appearances at us and a few appearances at Villa and he hasn’t torn up trees anytime I’ve seen him. So how anyone can suggest he could replace someone as majestic as Dembele is beyond me. He hasn’t managed a real run of games at any level, he is some way off our first team....

Onomah could be transitioned in over the next season or two as Dembele gets less minutes. His playing style is as about as close to Dembele as I have seen. He is only a kid don't forget. There is plenty of time to get himself properly focused and no better man to do that than Poch.

Because you've seen him wide or up top. He is a deep midfielder.

Look at Jack Roles, he is the bees knees in the Academy, 2 years younger than Onomah. Do we except Roles to go into the first team soon? No. Expect him to go to a top Championship club and get them promoted? No, not yet.

So if he is this deep lying midfielder why doesn’t anyone play him there? If Poch thought he was Demebeles understudy why when he come off the bench did Poch never put him in that position? Why has he not played in that position for Villa? I saw him play for England in the tournament the other year so I’m well aware of what he can do in that position but he can’t get a game there at club level so he must be some way off getting anywhere near our team....

Because it is a higher risk position. It is quite common to introduce players to first team football in wider positions where we are less likely to be punished for mistakes. He did play in CM for Villa earlier in the season but opportunities dried up as they began chasing a play off place.

The same as young CBs often get introduced at FB first

The is more glory in doing it the right way.

Even if we were to lose the current stars of the first team when we win the league in 4 years time with W-P, Onomah, Winks, Skipp and Griffiths as main parts of it I will be happier then if we went and brought the league like city did this year. Would love it if we as a club to a long term view to promoting talent.

Also think like truly good businesses we should accept a down year for a year or two if we are going for something bigger in the long run, like how John Lewis dont give a bonus for a year because they are streamlining their business.

This is what I mean, he’s not even trusted to get games at Villa in this position yet he’s meant to be Dembeles replacement? He’s got ability but he is some way off being good enough for Spurs,Nayim is right he’s about 6th Cm at best here. I’d be surprised if he wasn’t sent out on loan again next season tbh...
