OMT The Mighty THFC vs Abu Dhabi City

Nah, we started with great energy last night, it was tactics which cost us. Anyone questioning the energy did not watch the match IMO...we had lots of it (bar an 80% first Hazza) but they doubled down on Dembele and overloaded our right. We could not get a foothold. The effort, however, was there, we just could not keep the ball!

I disagree completely. We showed no energy in the first 20 minutes. Our high press was half hearted and virtually non existent. It left four of our players isolated too far up the field. The City midfield were then one man over and given lots of time and space to pick a pass. We started really slowly. Even Poch said that we didn't compete in the first twenty minutes. I can hardly recall a single crunching tackle in that period as we simply stood off them. This has been an issue for us in many games this season.

I thought that we were rather far off of competing with them on Saturday. We had numerous heart in mouth moments whereas it was only really the break where Lamela took a poor option that we caused the same panic in Emirates Marketing Project's defence. We are also a long way off of competing with them in terms of their points total.

The point is, it wasnt a "well what did you expect?" result, it was a "Thats disappointing, we should have done better" result.

We are far nearer being competitive with them than not.

I put very little stock in post match comments.

I highly doubt what he has to say in the changing room/training ground would be the same, and those are the talks that really matter.

So, personally, whatever he says after the Utd game (win/lose) I dont particularly care.

I think most often those comments are to the fans, and very much to the effect you say "Hey guys - we are competing at this level - where were we a few years ago? ..."

Priceless!

You don't even believe what the manager says now if it doesn't accord with your skewed world view.

You say you like stats, but don't seem to want to address the fact that we have only come back to win three times this season after going behind in 13 games. Yes, a sure sign of a winning mentality that!

I disagree. Chelsea had a start of several years over Emirates Marketing Project in becoming a rich man's play thing. Chelsea also had a higher starting point with their team already winning domestic Cups and them participating regularly in European football.

Emirates Marketing Project were several dubious refereeing decisions away from progressing to the semi finals of the CL this season and I didn't see any team in that competition that Emirates Marketing Project didn't have the capability to beat.

Emirates Marketing Project have only reached one semi final in 7 years. They failed to get out of the group stage for the first 2-3 years IIRC?

For all of Chelsea’s good fortune when they won it, they’ve had some horrendous luck and appalling decisions go against them in the past, losing a final on penalties, getting absolutely bummed by the ref at home to Barcelona.

Give it up, you lost this one ages ago, its about time you realised.

The board has your number.

Believe it or not, it's not about winning or losing. It's about opinions.

If you can't back up your opinion, that's your problem not mine.

I can back it up plenty, you just refuse to accept anything outside of your own narrow and convoluted view.

Just as you continually move the goalposts to make sure nobody can prove against your point.

Keep it up, as Billy says, at least it offers some entertainment.

Sorry for butting in (again! I know I'm beyond hope)

If by 'them' you mean City then its the exact opposite and its what totally tinkled me of Saturday!
We have have given every other club a game home and away even Cities nemesis Lpool.
But Saturday it felt like we rolled over and had our tummy tickled.

So answer these questions directly

1. Are you happy with our performances in the first twenty minutes in many games?
2. Are you happy with our return after conceding first in games this season?
3. Are you happy with our return from corners and set pieces?

Could we do better in all these areas?

Exactly. We didnt perform. And we are all disappointed because of that. Not because we were outclassed/outplayed but because we didnt deliver what we know we can.

Thats the point Im making. People know this team could have given City a real game - what is that if not being closer to being competitive with them than not?

Why should I when you have proven incapable yourself?

Aside from which, we all know you'll turn it into some sort of absolute to suit your argument when in reality all things are far more nuanced than you like to admit.

I think sometimes you just get teams who match up well against you and IMO Emirates Marketing Project are a team who are a good match up for Spurs at the moment.

We play a high line relying on Sanchez’s pace to get us out of trouble and push our full backs high up the pitch to provide us width and stretch the opposition to create space for Eriksen and Ali centrally. Emirates Marketing Project’s attacking pace means that they are good odds to get onto a ball in behind us to expose our high line. Sanchez is able to win the foot race against the attackers of most teams in the league, just not Emirates Marketing Project (or Liverpool). Also the fact that Emirates Marketing Project play two very attacking wide players in Sane and Sterling means that our fullbacks find it very difficult to get forward due to the risk of leaving us exposed to Emirates Marketing Project’s pace from wide areas. Silva was also too mobile and clever with his movement for Dier, which gives them a central focus point to launch their attacks. On the occasions when we did get forward Kane was unable to bully Kompany, so we didn’t really get any joy there, and our fullbacks being deeper than usual means that Emirates Marketing Project were able to defend the central areas with numbers making it very difficult for us to create chances. To beat Emirates Marketing Project with our current personnel I wonder whether Pochettino will have to move away from his reasonably purist tactics, look to defend deeper, protect the middle, keep two central midfielders deep at all times, go longer towards Kane and have three attacking midfield runners (say Son and Moura for their pace and then either Eriksen or Ali to add a bit of guile) in behind Kane to feed off the scraps able to exploit the fact that Emirates Marketing Project have so many players high up the pitch.

Great post.

The last bit in bold - We didn't live up to the our billing. or to put it another way. We under performed considering our recent form against similar quality opposition?

Yes?

I guess? We are a much better team than how we played Saturday, and are rightly disappointed to have not given a better account of ourselves.

I think Hazza has earned the trust of manager and team to find match fitness by playing. His goals have been huge and bountiful for us, and n ow he's in a sticky patch, we are absolutely right to stand by him IMO. I don't think the GB has anything to do with it TBH mate...

I have no problem with standing by him, its not the first time he has had a sticky patch ( all players have them) if it is just a matter of form. However ( imo) he does not look fully fit ( in fact he looks far from it) and that ( if it is the case) is what i worry about. Is he telling Poch that he is fit? and if that is the case then i would question it ( that is where the GB may come into it).

No one knows except him i guess.
