Gutter Boy

Tim Sherwood
Looks like he's finally finished his gardening leave

He's just been appointed head of recruitment at RB Leipzig

I'm not sure his results with us were particularly impressive.

These are the complete signings from the 3 windows he had with us:

Moussa Sissoko £30,000,000
Georges-Kevin N'koudou £11,000,000
Vincent Janssen £16,726,000
Victor Wanyama £11,000,000
Heung-Min Son £22,000,000
Clinton N'Jie £10,000,000
Toby Alderweireld £11,500,000
Kieran Trippier £3,500,000
Kevin Wimmer £4,300,000

Wanyama, Son and Alder were particular successes, but there's some horrors in their too (Sissy, Janssen, Njie and Nkoudou)

If you were told you can have Wanyama, Son, Alderweireld and Trippier for £120m, I think that's good business (Three of them are arguably the best in their position, and could cost £150m alone). And that doesn't take into consideration the money we'll get back on the others - in fact you could argue Wimmer was a success (£12m profit). Factor in the sales and the good four cost under £100m, plus whatever we recoup from selling the others, and I'd expect Levy to get back about half of that.

You'd have to add Trippier to the success list as well, imo. He may be a stopgap between Walker and Aurier in terms of owning the RB slot, but he has more than sufficiently repaid his purchase (as well as being elevated to the England squad).
Wimmer, at £4.3m, earned his keep that first season when he had to cover for Verts. After that he faded (in ability, if not physically :)). A success when we particularly needed him.
Even Sissoko - if getting regular first team football is a benchmark - is a success (*ducks*). Not stellar. Price tag (and perceived ability/lack thereof) will always leave a question mark from a value-perspective. A squad-level success maybe (and in no way intending to open the Sissoko debate in this thread!).

N'jie, GKN and Janssen the clear unsuccessful incomings (I don't see GKN coming back after his loan). The Janssen one is the surprising one for me, as he seemed to tick all the Poch boxes.

So a 1 in 3 dud rate (dud = not making it to regular first eleven).

But from the potential seen so far in our more recent signings - Sanchez, Aurier, Foyth (and hopefully Moura will be added to that list) - it doesn't feel that we will miss Mitchell.

Doesn't he get the "credit" for Alli too? could swear I read that he told us to sign him, also wasn't Son someone Poch had been an admirer of for years?

The point though was it's business, not scouting. Son, Alder and Wanyama were all very high profile - 2 of them were playing for Mitchell's previous club.

Scouting is David Pleat picking out Alli and Dier from obscurity for £5m a piece.

The opposite - both were long term targets that well predated him.

Pleat had long been working on/was responsible for Alli. Whereas Son has said we'd been trying to sign him constantly every window for 3 years previously (since Baldini days).

Why strange? He played well for us just couldn’t score. He was a 20 year old striker in a similar mould to Kane who’d just scored a bag full in the dutch league. The signing made perfect sense, just sometimes it doesn’t work out.

It hasn’t worked, yet.

Highlighted ones were good business IMO 50% success rate however when you think what a massive success Toby, Son and Wanyama have been it boosts his success rating. Once he's worked in Germany for a while he will be even more of an asset to his next employers.

Things is, I don't think his success rate is any better than Spur's average

- Carrick, Keane, JD, Berbatov, Modric, VDV, Bale, Rose, Walker, Lloris, Eriksen, Jan, Toby, Dembele, Sanchez, Dele, Son, Wanyama

The above is an amazing list of top quality players in last decade that would/could have played for any of the top teams in PL and/or Europe. and each of those we had in their prime or close to (not sold as 18-19 years olds that became world class elsewhere)

Add in the good level PL players (ala Chadli) or the odd cases like Paulinho (playing at Barca, still don't get it), plus the fact that we re-coup/profit on most players, I'd say Spurs under Levy has steadily improved and I don't think anyone is doing particularly better from a player scouting/buying point of view.

Spending 30M on Sissoko is the elephant in the room. Huge gamble with little chance to recoup the money. Anybody with a footballing brain can see that Sissoko never has been or will be the product Tottenham needs.

All other transfers on that list make sense in a way.

Maybe we upset him and that was his "fudge you" on the way out.
